DIRECTIONS

Introduction This question requires you to describe directions to a place or a journey based on the map given. Study the map given carefully and describe the directions step by step. Your description must give a clear picture of the route shown in the map. Guidelines 1 Read the instructions and study the map carefully. 2 Take note of details like names of roads, landmarks, signs, symbols, etc. 3 Trace the route by following the arrows from starting point to the end. As you do this, note down all important details that you need to include in your composition. 4 When you give directions, make sure they are clear and accurate and follow the sequence of counts as shown in the map. 5 Make sure you use the correct prepositions of places. You can also use logical connectors like next, then, after that, etc. to link your directions. 6 Use adjectives to add interest and to help make your directions clearer (e.g. large building, yellow roof building, narrow road, etc). 7 Below are some examples of useful lines in giving directions. - At the junction, turn left. - Do not turn. Keep going straight. - Walk towards the shops. - Walk across the playground. - The stall is opposite the bus stop. - You will see a bank next to the restaurant. - Drive past the petrol station. - Walk along Jalan Raja Laut. - At the roundabout, turn right. - On your right you will see the post office. 8 Each main point should be in a separate paragraph. 9 Keep your sentences short. If you are giving directions, you may use the present tense. 10 Read through and check for mistakes in vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Format Introduction : Body Paragraph 1 : Paragraph 2 & 3: Conclusion : Describe the directions or journey as required by the question. Start giving directions or the route or description of the journey. Continue with the directions or description. Add some comments about the route or journey whether simple or difficult or interesting.

Study the sample text on the next page. Discuss with your teacher about the guidelines and format in the sample text.

Situation Last Sunday, you went to your uncles village with your friend, Alex. Both of you spent one whole day touring the village. Study the map below and describe about what both of you saw and did.

The trip to my uncles village had been planned a month ago. My uncle, Uncle Meng, lives in Kampung Bunga. He had invited Alex and me to visit his village for a weekend. On the morning of that Saturday, we left our homes early for the bus station. We boarded the bus at six oclock and arrived at the Kampung Bunga bus stop at eight. Uncle Meng, who was waiting at the bus stop in the village, was very happy to see us. Uncle Mengs wife, Aunt Rose, had prepared us breakfast. There was a variety of food. Alex and I ate a lot. After the heavy breakfast, we started our tour of the village. First, we went to the vegetable farm. It was a very big farm. There were many types of vegetables. We saw the workers busy watering and fertilizing the plants. Uncle Meng bought some beans and cabbages for us to take home. Our next stop was a fishing pond. Alex and I had brought along our fishing line. Fishing is our hobby. We almost spent three hours trying our luck. We managed to catch ten small fish. That would be for dinner that night. As it was almost noon, Alex suggested a swim. So we went to the nearby waterfall. It was so nice to put our tired feet in the cool water. After the swim, we felt hungry. Study the given situation, then discuss with your teacher about the map. Write your essay on a piece of paper. You and your family spent one whole day at a hill resort. It is called the Sedap Hill Resort. Study the map below and describe what you all saw and did there.
