The Magnifier - 10: Fast. Forward. Reliable

The document discusses several topics related to education in the Philippines: 1) It discusses the "brain drain" phenomenon where many Filipinos go abroad for work due to economic hardship at home and the desire for a better quality of life. 2) It describes Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia, an institution that offers affordable education and scholarships to help students succeed, gathering top students from across the region. 3) It examines the pros and cons of the K+12 education system, which adds two years to basic education. While it aims to make graduates more employable internationally, it also increases costs for families. The system intends to validate Philippine degrees worldwide.

OPINION JUNE- OCTOBER 2011

BRAIN-DRAIN PHENOMENON Fenjiemar E. Ecol Brain-drain Phenomenon. This is an appropriate term used in the case where people are oriented to work abroad. On my end as a student, I think the reason behind this is the kind of mind set we have right now and the goal to get rid of the bondage of the despotic situation in our economic status today. We Filipinos are born to face any defiance and others are more willing to take risk in rendering their service to other country for various names in the name of survival, in the name of getting out from deficiency and in the name of having an instant well of living. As I weigh things, I cant say that I will not do the same thing, especially in my case that my family called me as bread winner. If I just live life for my own, I will not exchange the privilege of rendering my service to our country, for I believed that every Filipino child are in need of Filipino teachers to mold them for the future of this country but since I want a gem picture of my family in the future, I will grab any opportunities that may come along my way. ___________________________________________________________________________
I SHOULD HAVE THIS BEFORE Fenjiemar Ecol Why is it we are too confident for tomorrows hours? And tend to forget that no matter how we would like to stop tomorrows coming, it will really come. Are we just too confident and gallant? Or we are just lazy and. We dont want to start doing things because we hate pressures and avoid stress, so we set aside things which do not allure us nor create harmony in our ears because having deadlines, past it on, and the checking will be on are lines that we dont want to hear- and I must admit it. Now, I would ask you. Is prolonging to do things changed the given deadlines and schedule where it must be done? Stress? Yes, you might be free from it but only an hour. As a matter of fact, whether you accept it or not it only triples the pressure, stress, and burden. I myself, even wrote this article eating the skin of my teeth and bitting the bullet just to meet the deadline of this article. I dont know if I could have this kind of article if I should have done this before. The upper view of this article is already a representation of what we called Procrastination

OPINION NOT A PRIVILEGE BUT A RIGHT Fenjiemar E. Ecol I am one of those youths who think going to college is so expensive, that college would take volts of banks when you want to deposit yourself and get the interest as the result of what you want to become in the future. Here comes Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia, the institution that offers a concept of education that everybody could ever imagine. I can say that this is the only institution that able to gather all brilliant students from different places here in Mindanao and sooner or later would reach Luzon and Visayas if God would allow it. I could still remember the first day I entered Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia. Almost 98% in or population way back 2008 were enjoying the great privilege offered by this institution and I must admit that it seems like our classroom could be a representation of human brain and we are its parts because valedictorians, salutatorians, and honourable were here. Yes, name it as you could, thats the strong asset of this institution, seeing not what their naked eye sees but what students are able to show out of their mind. In connection with it, students who graduated with honours can enjoy up to 100% free tuition and miscellaneous, and whats good about it compared to other scholarship is that, once you are qualified as one of their scholars it would take you to pay only the miscellaneous if you fail to maintain the require grades. Christian Colleges of Southeast Asia is an epitome of what an institution should be as the training ground for citizens who are adequate mentally and spiritually well. ___________________________________________________________________________ K+12 EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES: DEAL OR DO DEAL? By Rex a. Lim The newly proposed yet already implemented curriculum in basic education aims to promote employable graduates even in the high school level. The necessary skills needed for the mainstream of endeavor will be taught in Senior High School. However, does this warrant success in itself? The K+12 model of education earns much criticisms from the different sectors of our society. Some others say that this only becomes an additional burden on their part as a parent because you need to expend extra money for the additional two years in high school. Even if the education is free, but there is no free allowance. Though, it is the responsibility of the parents to rear them and provide the basic needs, the social reality reveals this essence. We abhor the concept of negligence but this what actually is happening now. We failed to appreciate the value of education that our children may earn along the process. The K+12 model of education ensures validity of our degree world-wide. According to research, we are the only country left in Asia following the 10 year cycle of education. Meaning, when our graduates will go abroad, they will not be recognized as professionals there because their credentials do not attest full credits of professionalism. What Im trying to say is, lets open our minds and hearts for this breakthrough in education. This may bring development into us. JUNE- OCTOBER 2011
