Selectively inhibits the reuptake of serotonin in Contraindications/warnings/interactions

SEIZURES, anxiety, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, nervousness,
diarrhea, sexual dysfunction, excessive sweating, pruritus, tremor.

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or Lab value alterations caused by medicine
herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) Monitor CBC and differential periodically during therapy. Notify
BuSpar: increased risk of serotonin syndrome physician or other health care professional if leukopenia, anemia,
Motrin: May potentiate the risk of bleeding thrombocytopenia, or increased bleeding time occurs. Proteinuria and
mild ↑ in AST may occur during sensitivity reactions. May cause ↑ in
serum alkaline phosphatase, ALT, BUN, creatine phosphokinase;
hypouricemia, hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia, and
hyponatremia
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication
Take with food to avoid stomach irritation, take as directed (if a dose is
missed – skip it and remember to take the next dose), may cause
drowsiness, dizziness, impaired judgement, blurred vision. Don’t drive
or operate heavy machiniery until effects of medication are known,
sudden discontinuation of medication may cause anxiety, insomnia,
nervousness, change positions slowly to minimize dizziness, avoid
alcohol and other CNS depressants during therapy, inform provider if
pregnancy is planned or suspected, instruct on methods to relieve dry
mouth, skin may become more sensitive to sunlight – protective
clothing, sunscreen, may cause decreased libido, inform provider of
undesired or problematic side effects.
