Thread the end yarn through a darning needle and
through the last 8 stitches. Close the loop but not
too tightly yet. Thread the yarn through again but
this time omitting stitch numbers 4 and 8. They were
your purl stitches. Now you can pull the yarn tight.
This will help make a neat petal tip. The purl stitches
form the folds at the sides of the petal. Line up the
front and back of the petal and sew some hidden
stitches down through the centre to hold it in place.
Putting the daffodil together.
Place one petal on top of the other so that they overlap
from centre to centre. Sew together, hiding your sewing
stitches by following the line of your knit stitches. This
overlapping will help the petals to sit upright when
you finally bring the sixth and first petals together.
Place the bell in the centre and sew into place.
VERY IMPORTANT
All of the components of the tea cosy are begun by knitting in the round. Any method of knitting in the
round will do. l have used the Magic Loop method. lt is described in the Tips and Techniques section
here. lf you need more help, Google "knitting in the round with the magic loop" for some terrific YouTube
teaching videos to learn by.
Base Low round base
Using the 5mm circular needles and TWO threads
of the china blue 8 ply wool, cast on 8 stitches.
The TWO threads will give you a sturdy base
on which to place your large (heavyj daffodil
AND it will keep your tea warmer longer.
Join in the round.
Base Variation Tall pointy base
Use 4 mm needles and 1 strand of 8 ply. Follow the
pattern as for the low round base but add 5 knit rounds
in between each increasing round. To increase, knit
into the front and back of the stitch. You will definitely
need a lining. With 4mm needles and 1 strand of
8 ply follow the pattern as for the low round base.
Make a cone of stiff interfacing to fit the peak.
Increase instruction
To increase we're going to do something a little
different. Each stitch is a double yarn stitch. When you
see the word "increase", knit each of the two threads
of that single stitch separately - making 2 stitches
where there was just 1 before. Otherwise knit each
(double yarnj stitch with your (doublej working yarn.
Rnd 1 (and each alternate roundj: Knit
Rnd 2: lnc into every stitch (See
lncrease instructionj. (16 stj
Rnd 4: *K1, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (24 stj
Rnd 6: *K2, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (32 stj
Rnd 8: *K3, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (40 stj
Rnd 10: *K4, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (48 stj
Rnd 12: *K5, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (56 stj
Rnd 14: *K6, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (64 stj
Rnd 16: *K 7, increase. Rpt from * to end of round. (72 stj
Measure against your teapot. lf the circumference is
now big enough, go to the next bit, if not, continue
in the same increasing pattern until it is.
The Sides
Up to this point you have been working round and round.
Now you are going to work BACK and FORTH in ROWS.
Find the point where the working yarn is. This becomes
the first stitch of the first ROW on ONE SlDE of the cosy.
Because you are now working in ROWS, and working
back across the stitches you have just made (not
onto the next stitch in the roundj, you will have
the reverse side of stocking stitch facing you.
Row 1: K1, P1, place marker (pmj. Purl
to the last 2 stitches. K1, P1.
Row 2: (K1, P1j twice. K1, pm. Knit to 1 st before
marker. P1. Remove marker (rmj K1, P1.
Row 3: (K1, P1j three times. pm. Purl to 1 st
before marker. K1, rm. P1, K1 twice. P1
Row 4: (K1, P1j four times. K1, pm. Knit to 1
st before marker. P1, rm. Rib St to end.
Row 5: (K1, P1j five times. pm. Purl to 1 st
before marker. K1, rm. Rib St to end
See how you are creating a ribbed pattern row by row
in from the edges of the tea cosy sides. lt forms a lovely
curve getting from stocking stitch to ribbed stitch and
makes a simple base just that much more classy.
Row 6: (K1, P1j six times. K1, pm. Knit to 1 st
before marker. P1, rm. Rib St to end.
Row 7: (K1, P1j seven times. pm. Purl to 1 st
before marker. K1, rm. Rib St to end.
Row 8: (K1, P1j eight times. K1, pm. Knit to
1 before marker. P1, rm. Rib st to end.
Row 9: Rib stitch.
lf you had 72 stitches in the round, 36 stitches on each
side, then you will now be up to rib stitch all the way
across. lf you have more stitches, continue adding an
extra rib on the inside edges of the curve on every row.
Continue to rib stitch down Side One of the cosy
base until it measure all the way to table. So
that means you need to try it on your pot.
Repeat the same instructions for the other
side. Remember you started with the
WRONG SlDE of the tea cosy facing?
TIPS AND TECHNIQUES
Knitting in the round with the Magic Loop.
Cast on 8 stitches (for examplej. Count 4 stitches and
ease the cable out into a loop between the fourth and
fifth stitches.
Join in the round. Remember, you are knitting in the
ROUND. Around and around, not back and forth as you
do in ROWS. Check that the cast-on stitches are not
twisted. Join the last cast-on stitch you made to the
first cast- on stitch you made, simply by knitting the first
cast-on stitch.
Knit half the round - then set up the loops and cables
ready to knit the other half round. You need one
needlepoint to knit FROM (holding the waiting stitchesj
and one needlepoint to knit WlTH (free of stitchesj. As
you knit round and round, always keep the cable looped
at each halfway mark.
TIP: The most common mistake when knitting in the
round is to add a stitch at the change over of the cable
loops and needles. Take your time to arrange the working
thread so that it is not wrapped around cable loops
and needles.
TIP: Sometimes the join is loose. Don't worry. When you
have finished knitting the piece, use a needles and thread
to darn the hole up. There are clever knitting methods to
avoid this but on this tea cosy, it will all be covered up in
the sewing together. Smoke and mirrors.
Make 1:
To Make 1 (M1j is to increase by lifting up the
connecting thread between the stitch you have just
worked and the stitch you are about to work, onto the
left (waitingj needle. Knit into the back of it and slip it
off. Careful though. You want to make an extra stitch
without making a lace hole.
lt has to do with the way you place that thread up on the
waiting needle. But you'll be able to work that bit out.
SSK slip slip knit
This is a way of decreasing to make the stitches lean
towards the left when the knitted fabric is facing you.
Slip one stitch knitwise, slip another stitch knitwise.
lnsert the left needle into the front of the two slipped
stitches and knit them together through the back.
K2tg Knit 2 Together
This is a way of decreasing to make the stitches lean
toward the right when the knitted fabric is facing you.
Place your working needle into the next two stitches
knitwise and knit them together.
Make yourself a hot
cuppa and enjoy!
