Terminology

IC = In Character, means actions and events which happen ingame. Your character only has knowledge of IC actions and nothing from OOC. Using OOC knowledge is therefore metagaming. Things people say in-game are IC (e.g. say "Hello!"). Use of internet slang and smileys, AKA netspeak (e.g. Lol, rofl, :D, ^.^, etc.) IC is prohibited. Think about it this way: would a person normally say out loud colon capital letter D? There is a me verb for a reason. OOC = Out of Character, means the goings on outside the game. Its the things that you, the player, know, see, etc. The two should never be mixed or knowledge from one being used to influence the actions in the other. If you're angry at someone IC, don't bring it to OOC. OOC can be used to ask questions about game mechanics, but should not contain in-game knowledge. For example "How do I build a wall?" is fine. "halp, urist mcguy is beating me" is not okay. Griefing = To cause grief to another player for no reason. Examples of this are beating random players senselessly for no reason, setting the singularity free for no reason, destroying the station for no reason, etc. No, we don't partake in griefing on this server, and doing so will get you banned. Metagaming = Using information acquired out of character to influence the actions in character. One example is calling the shuttle at the beginning of a secret round to figure out the antagonists/game mode. Another example is learning who the traitor is from chatting with other players outside of the game, or through in-game IC in OOC and then acting on this information. This also means using knowledge that your character, as an employee of NanoTrasen, could not have. Also, generally using knowledge that your profession would not have is also metagaming. This also includes some specifics mentioned below. Metagaming can result in a ban. Powergaming = Also known as 'playing to win'. If you're trying to complete your objectives, kill the antagonists, or 'win', at all costs and ignore RP completely, you may be better off somewhere else. This includes having your character unafraid of death or pain, resistant to any torture, ready to battle alone against a crowd of opponents, or, being unarmed, senselessly attacking a gun wielder. This also includes loading up your character with items just in case. For example: taking insulated gloves just in case, especially when not working within Engineering. IC in OOC = Saying IC things (like the gamemode) in OOC (e.g. "why the heck is it cult again" in secret), or speaking of events within the game (e.g. "crap why am I a warden again," "I got killed by the botanist," "the HoS is total shit he's permabrigged 5 people," etc). Generally, if someone not playing can tell what's going on using OOC, it's IC in OOC. IC in OOC is prohibited. Admins have the right to mute players who do this, mute the OOC chat entirely, or temporarily ban players depending on the situation. OOC in IC = Talking OOC in IC. Most of the time, this is just bad, (e.g "why is some of the game text red" or "i clicked the door and it didn't work") because it breaks the immersion. If you really, REALLY, have to only say something to those around you, like a local OOC, then you can use ((brackets)) to signify OOC. Otherwise, you might get a "voice in your head" telling you to stop.

General Server Rules

Read all of these rules. Yes, thank you for reading this; many people don't. Not reading the rules can get you banned to give you some time to go over them. Don't be a dick. This is a simple rule and really needs very little explanation. Don't ruin the game for everyone else and use your common sense. NO USE OF ANY BIGOTRY/RACIAL TERMS. We are very big on this rule and do not have tolerance for it. This rule includes homophobic and racial slurs alike. Even if you use a term without the direct intent of having it be especially related to bigotry, it is still not allowed. Examples: saying this round is gay hey nigga or runtime is a fag. Going against this rule can very easily land you a permaban. For those who insist on being allowed to use the terms mentioned above as you so please: if your vocabulary, creativity, and imagination is as limited as to not being able to comply with these set of rules by using other words, then you are better off somewhere else. This is a community that can articulate themselves in a better fashion. This rule will not ease up. Homographs for fag: using the term outside of its rude and derogatory definition is accepted. Examples include using it as slang for a cigarette or being exhausted, as observed in some dialects. However, do not attempt to use the excuse of I was referring to [insert other definition here] when the intent is found to be plainly different. o As a side note: the host himself has made the note to players to try to avoid using local dialect IC. See here.

Don't be offensive. We are a community that aims for civilized actions. This isnt saying that we have to be serious all the time; we simply aim to be civilized and respectful of one another. In both IC and OOC, discrimination, insulting players and admins, and vulgar/lewd acts fall under this rule. The vulgar/lewd acts note is basically what used to be known as the no creepiness rule. vulgar indecent; obscene; lewd. marked by lack of taste, manners, etc. lewd crude and offensive in a sexual way.

This rule does not prohibit swearing or using petty, crude taunts (e.g. a simple fuck you or you dick). However, there is a line between petty jabs and offensiveness. If an admin warns you for performing some act deemed as offensive (not only deemed by the admins; it may also be deemed by players if they were offended by it), then simply stop. Continued offensive behavior warrants a permaban. Note: admins may use their discretion to decide on simply warning prior to a ban, or placing a direct permaban.

No erotic RP. Seriously: just don't do it. Roleplaying a relationship is fine. Roleplaying up to a sexual nature is not. Rape is not. Failure to follow this can also land you a permaban. No IC in OOC, or OOC in IC. Read the Terminology section if you do not know what this is. Admins have the right to mute players who do this, mute the OOC chat entirely, or temporarily ban players depending on the situation. No links in OOC not approved by an admin. Straight-forward rule: any links in OOC not approved by an admin may lead to a ban.

No internet slang/smileys in the IC chat. Already briefed in the Terminology section under the definition of "IC," this is prohibited. Continued use of netspeak IC after being warned can lead to a temporary ban. Read the wiki guides for your job position, current game mode, etc. This is the wiki our server uses. It should be your responsibility as a player to first research information regarding in-game things. If you cannot find something, feel free to use ahelp, and the admins will help you out. Don't select job/head positions or antagonist roles that you have no knowledge on. For those new to SS13, it's always good to start off playing as an assistant or cargo technician so that you can familiarize yourself with how things work around the station. Always read the wiki guides to your job before trying it out in the game, and start off small; don't immediately jump into a Chain of Command position when you don't even know how those under you are supposed to work. As for antagonist roles, always read the wiki guide regarding your role. Listen to the admins. One should always reply to admin PMs and listen to the little voices in their heads. Talk to the admins with respect, and you should be fine. Responding rudely and immaturely won't get you very far, and might even result in a ban. Also... Do not lie to the admins. This should be self-explanatory. Lying will only dig you a deeper hole and warrants harsh consequences.

Rules Regarding Roleplay

"Was this grief?" If you adminhelp an incident that has occurred that you believe is grief, and the admin simply replies "legit," this simply means that the kill was in some way justified, and the admin cannot disclose the reason why. Braindeads: These are players who have logged off or been disconnected before dying. They can be detected due to them standing in place and revealing a "has a vacant, braindead stare..." message upon examination. This does not mean you have the right to kill them. For the most part, this is because some players may leave the game for a period of time, but eventually come back. How would you like it if you had to leave, then come back and find out you're dead? Killing braindeads can result in a ban. Stealing their items just for the sake of taking them is also discouraged. Use a 'normal,' realistic IC name. For all players, names that break any of other server rules are not allowed. However, mime and clown players do have some exceptions to the following. Don't use honorific titles (Dr., Sir, Mrs., etc). Names that are tied to politics/celebrities/famous people or places in general are prohibited (e.g. Adolf Hitler, Abraham Lincoln, etc). Names referenced from games, movies, cartoons, shows, and books (e.g. Gordon Freeman, Honey Boo Boo, etc) are also prohibited. We like to see originality and creativity in names, so please don't throw a fit if an admin asks you to change your IC name in the next round. Murder: Murder is a touchy thing. On one hand, it sucks being knocked out of the round for a couple of hours. On the other, it's SS13. All-in-all, murder should not have to happen often, excluding antagonists.

Self-defense is always acceptable. However, self-defense is only applicable if there is obvious danger, such as someone beating you down with a crowbar. Dont confuse obvious danger with paranoia. Syndicates are dangerous! Syndicates are notorious criminals, renowned for their proclivity of raiding and destroying stations not unlike space vikings. Murdering an innocent and claiming he is a Syndicate is actually worse than being a Syndicate yourself, and will not only bring you retribution from the crew, but the "Gods" as well. "I'm crazy!!!1" is shitty roleplaying tossed up to thinly veil the fact that you want to grief the station and not get punished for it. Generally it's usually better to brig someone than kill them, but circumstances are not always ideal, and the safety of the crew comes before the safety of the proven traitor when all is said and done. Unless acting in self-defense, it's always better to have security deal with criminals/possible traitors. You shouldn't powergame and kill someone because you heard they were a possible traitor.

Spawn camping: Antagonists that are the last ones alive on the station are not allowed to camp at Arrivals, for the sake of killing anyone that enters the game and not allowing the round to end properly. If all other players are dead, then it is your responsibility to call the shuttle and let the round end.

Security/Chain of Command: These guys have a tendency to ruin the round for everyone else due to a lack of knowledge on how we expect these roles to be played. They have greater expectations placed on themselves than other positions. If you're one of these roles and cannot handle that responsibility, ask for a job change. Those with these positions of authority will receive harsher punishments for offenses than those not in such a position.

We generally want the security force to go by Space Law and the Guide to Security. Follow these, or possibly receive a jobban. In security, don't bedcuff; it is deemed as shitcurity. Jail cells have built-in flashes for a reason, if the prisoner needs to be subdued. Head positions should know what they're doing within their part of the station. They should guide those underneath them, make sure everything is running, etc.

The Armory: Taking anything out of here (except for the flashers and barricades) without a good reason, or at the start of the round, will result in an immediate jobban. Traitors are an exception. Surgery Tools: Taking the surgery tools out of the Operating Theatre and/or Robotics will result in a jobban. Traitors are an exception. Chemists: Do your job, which is to make medicine and any other chemicals that anyone else needs. Examples of bad playing: Handing out mislabeled things (Acid, Mindbreaker Toxin), running around with a bottle of polytrinic acid 'just in case' (which is powergaming). Geneticists: If you're found abusing superpowers (hulk especially) or not doing your job to clone players, consider yourself jobbanned.
