Class G Gasfitting Permit


This fact sheet explains how to obtain a permit for Class G gasfitting work in Western Australia, pursuant to the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999. Scope of Class G gasfitting work A Class G gasfitting permit is required for installation and servicing work associated with the following: Type A appliances; piping systems operating up to 200 kPa; domestic premises; small commercial premises; caravans; campervans, mobile workshops or marine craft. To obtain a Class G gasfitting permit refer to the following application forms: 1. WA registered apprentices (Plumbing and Gasfitting) Application for a Class G gasfitting permit for apprentices and pre-apprentices restricted to work under supervision 2. WA trade qualified (Plumbing and Gasfitting) for Installation (optional servicing) Application for a Class G Gasfitting Permit on completion of a recognised apprenticeship 3. Non licensed or overseas Gas Fitters (Restricted permit to work under supervision) Application for a restricted Class G gasfitting permit for non gasfitting trade trained or overseas gas fitter to work under supervision A permit restricted to work under supervision may be issued so that work can be undertaken while completing training and/or assessment. 4. Non licensed or overseas qualified Gas Fitters that meet WA licensing requirements Application for a Class G Gasfitting Permit for nongasfitting trade trained or overseas gas fitter Holders of gasfitting licences from another Australian State or Territory If you hold a current gasfitting licence/registration in another State or Territory of Australia you may be able to apply for a permit under mutual recognition. Should you qualify for a Class G gasfitting permit under mutual recognition you should obtain copies of: Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999, Gas Installation AS5601, Notices of Completion (provided by EnergySafety), and Compliance badges (provided by EnergySafety). We recommend you also attend a short course on WA Gas Legislation. Substantial infringements and penalties are in effect for noncompliant work. Use the application form Application for a Gasfitting Permit Statutory Declaration - Mutual Recognition (Western Australia) Act to apply for a Class G permit under this category. Assessments A person may apply to be assessed for their current skills and knowledge to carry out Class G gasfitting work. A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) can carry out an assessment in accordance with EnergySafety guidelines. Any associated costs are at the applicants expense. Contact a RTO for further information. A list of Registered Training Organisations (RTO) is provided on page 2. If a person does not apply for a permit on completion of training or their permit has expired Where a person did not apply for a permit on completion of training or their permit has expired: Within 2 years - a permit can be issued on receipt of the application. Between 2 and 5 years the person is required to successfully complete a theory assessment on the regulations and AS5601. More than 5 years the person is required to successfully complete a theory and practical assessment on the regulations and the persons skills and knowledge to carry out Class G gasfitting.

The Regulations In Western Australia, the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999 provide that gasfitting work may only be carried out by persons with an appropriate gasfitting permit or authorisation issued by the Director of Energy Safety. The purpose of the Regulations is to ensure the safety of gas fitters and consumers of gas throughout Western Australia. Anyone who carries out gas fitting in Western Australia should make themselves aware of the penalties for doing noncompliant work. Who is the Director of Energy Safety? The Director of Energy Safety has the authority to issue gasfitting permits to persons who provide satisfactory evidence of their knowledge, skills and ability to perform gasfitting work safely, to a trade finish and in compliance with the regulations. Eligibility for a permit (Regulation 12) The Director of Energy Safety may issue a permit to an applicant to carry out the gasfitting specified in the permit if the Director is satisfied that the applicant: has adequate theoretical and practical knowledge and adequate skills to carry out the gasfitting; has an adequate knowledge of the Act and the associated regulations; and is otherwise a fit and proper person to carry out the gasfitting. How to apply for a permit To apply for a gasfitting permit, an applicant must complete an application form and provide the appropriate evidence of eligibility. Applications should be submitted to the Licensing Office at EnergySafety. What is the penalty for working without a permit? A person who carries out gasfitting work without an appropriate permit is liable for a prosecution and a fine under the Gas Standards Act 1972 and associated regulations. Who are the Registered Training Organisations?
