Dear
Geal
Towey,
Having
enrolled
in
Professor
Terry

INFO
424:
Information
Visualization
and
Aesthetics
course
this
past
fall,
I
have
grown
to
love
the
look
and
feel
of
your
graceful
designs.
Your
involvement
with
Martha
Stewart
Living
Omnimedia
has
shaped
the
sensibility
of
the
company
through
aesthetics
that
are
elegantly
simple,
classically
stylish,
and
always
instructive.
As
an
aspiring
professional
designer,
I
hope
to
one
day
make
such
a
profound
impact
in
the
media
industry
as
you
have!
To
better
give
you
a
sense
of
my
design
experience,
I
have
created
this
portfolio
that
features
several
pages
for
your
upcoming
publication,
Visit
Washington
Often.
You
may
notice
that
my
inspiration
draws
from
visual
models
scanned
off
of
Martha
Stewart
Living.
Each
portfolio
entry
is
linked
with
an
online
page
and
I
justify
how
my
adaptation
tells
the
story
of
each
of
page.
I
look
forward
to
receiving
any
feedback
you
may
have
about
my
work!
Respectfully,
Bryan

Washington
Memories
Aesthetic
Congruency
Every
single
photo
chosen
on
this
page
evokes
memories
for
both
natives
and
tourists
that
visit
Washington
State.
The
bowl
of
apples
and
the
iconography
of
Mount
Rainier
in
the
bottom
right
hand
corner
are
highly
associated
with
summer
months,
such
as
the
featured
month
of
June.
The
color
scheme
of
these
two
images
provides
a
great
contrast
between
the`
warm
and
cold
temperatures
that
exist
at
different
geographic
locations
in
the
state
during
the
summer.
The
shadowed
`lower
on
the
upper
left
hand
corner
is
the
coast
rhododendronthe
of`icial
state
`lowerand
is
based
off
of
green
and
pink
tints,
again
providing
another
natural
feel
to
the
page.
The
images
cleverly
take
up
space
in
the
evident
gaps
towards
the
end
of
the
calendar
and
are
thus
very
well
integrated
into
the
page.
This
page
is
elegantly
designed
to
carry
the
reader
from
the
beginning
of
the
calendar
(
June
1st)
to
the
end
of
the
calendar
(June
30th).
Because
the
lines
of
the
calendar
table
are
not
heavy,
the
readers
eyes
can
easily
traverse
through
each
cell
to
`ind
a
speci`ic
date
in
mind.
Linking
Mechanism
The
linking
structure
is
very
congruous
with
the
color
scheme
of
the
page.
The
website
header
itself
provides
a
nice
contrast
to
the
white
background
of
the
calendar.
Moreover,
the
green
navigation
links
at
the
top
of
the
page
are
a
shade
within
the
same
color
family
as
the
greens
found
in
the
western
hemlock
trees
(the
of`icial
state
tree)
towards
the
bottom
of
the
page.
Links
are
naturally
separated
with
the
use
of
white
symbols.
Movement
Justi7ication
This
page
effectively
uses
Silverlight
to
illustrate
motion
when
the
state
`lower
slides
gracefully
across
the
page.
Such
a
movement
immediately
grabs
the
readers
attention
and
directs
the
reader
to
the
title
of
the
site,
Washington
Memories.
As
the
`lower
sweeps
to
the
right,
it
also
becomes
more
translucent
until
it
disappearsand
the
entire
process
repeats
inde`initely.
This
pattern
is
analogous
to
how
Western
society
reads
text
from
left
to
right,
catering
to
the
magazines
large
following
of
English
subscribers.
Washington
Famous
Aesthetic
Congruency
The
three
round
dessert
images
add
a
pleasantly
comforting
touch
to
this
rendition
of
a
page
for
famous
Washington
recipes.
The
colors
red
and
orange
make
up
a
majority
of
the
sites
hues,
which
evoke
very
warm
and
sweet
connotations.
This
adaptation
well
integrates
these
tepid
colors
into
the
featured
apple
tartsdesserts
served
in
many
Washington
restaurants.
Overall,
the
images
are
well
integrated
into
the
image
and
support
an
aesthetic
balance
between
the
curves
of
the
cuisine
images
and
the
straight
edges
of
the
famous
recipe.
In
terms
of
eye
management,
readers
may
`ind
the
silverware
located
in
the
upper
left
corner
to
catch
their
eye
as
a
common
starting
point.
The
presence
of
the
silverware,
in
addition
to
the
checkered
napkins,
adds
weight
to
that
area
of
the
page
to
grasp
the
readers
initial
attention.
The
reader
then
follows
the
downward
trail
of
the
three
apple
tart
desserts
before
having
to
redirect
vision
to
the
top
of
the
recipe.
Linking
Mechanism
The
linking
structure
deliberately
remains
exactly
the
same
throughout
the
entire
online
portfolio.
This
provides
consistency
of
familiar
design
to
new
and
old
readers
of
Visit
Washington
Often.
The
website
header
itself
provides
a
nice
contrast
to
the
white
backgrounds
of
each
magazine
page.
An
additional
link
to
the
explanation
and
justi`ication
of
each
page
has
also
been
included
in
the
navigation
menu,
which
directs
back
to
this
document.
Movement
Justi7ication
The
red
captions
that
accompany
the
desserts
in
this
design
serve
as
aesthetic
detours
from
the
normal
deviation
of
the
main
text.
For
this
reason,
the
captions
have
been
animated
to
fade
into/out
of
the
foreground/background.
This
clever
animation,
created
in
Microsoft
Expression
Blend,
allows
the
reader
to
take
in
and
absorb
the
full
picture
of
the
delectable
desserts
for
a
second
or
two
without
any
textual
or
graphical
distractions.
Although
the
animation
repeats
in`initely,
the
caption
location
remains
constant
in
order
to
align
directly
underneath
the
respective
desserts.
Washington
Beauty
Aesthetic
Congruency
This
page
implements
a
three-column
layout
to
display
both
textual
and
pictorial
information.
The
upper
right
hand
photo
is
undoubtedly
the
main
focal
point
because
it
takes
up
more
than
a
third
of
the
page
and
spans
two
columns.
The
grid
is
also
divided
by
a
secondary
picture
that
is
adjacent
to
the
main
one.
Nonetheless,
the
overall
grid
design
still
allows
for
a
comprehendible
reading
experience
for
any
person
who
comes
across
this
page.
As
evidently
illustrated,
wine
tasting
is
a
common
past
time
for
many
adventurous
Washingtonians.
The
rich,
red
color
scheme
that
is
used
in
this
adaptation
evokes
cozy
and
welcoming
feelings.
The
main
picture
uses
the
element
of
perspective
to
draw
attention
to
the
columnar
objects
on
the
tablelike
the
glass
of
wine.
Dramatic
visual
cues
in
this
adaption
may
even
make
experienced
wine
tasters
salivate!
The
beautiful
pictures
included
in
this
aesthetic
design
provide
great
visuals
to
another
dense
page
of
text.
Linking
Mechanism
For
this
portfolio
entry
in
particular,
the
linking
structure
and
navigation
bar
heading
provides
a
perfect
compliment
to
the
color
scheme
of
the
page
at
hand
(white
against
black,
green
against
red).
This
results
in
the
strongest
contrast
for
green
hyperlinks
to
stand
out
from
their
surrounding
background.
Overall,
the
linking
mechanism
is
able
to
successfully
direct
readers
from
one
page
of
the
portfolio
to
another.
Movement
Justi7ication
Because
this
page
is
already
full
of
drama
and
tension,
excessive
use
of
animations
will
not
be
necessary
to
convey
the
message
of
wine
tasting.
To
highlight
the
contents
of
each
wine
glass,
an
animated
sparkle
GIF
is
rotated
on
a
stationary
central
axis
for
perpetuity.
The
wine
glass
to
the
right
has
a
faster
sparkle
animation
because
it
is
more
prominently
centered.
Thus
the
peripheral
left
wine
glass
has
a
slower
animation
speed
and
a
larger
sparkle
since
it
is
more
close
to
the
reader
in
terms
of
perspective.
As
a
recurring
theme
throughout
the
portfolio,
all
animations
were
programmed
to
function
in`initely
to
excite
and
guide
the
eyes
of
readers.
