Five members of Troop 47 attend Scout Jamboree
By CANDICE ROBERTS
The Shamong Sun
Five members of Indian Mills
Boy Scout Troop 47 attended the
2013 National Scout Jamboree
from July 15 to July 24. Lou
Bergdoll, Jack Dougherty, Jack
Levy, Aaron Uscinowicz and
Jacob Uscinowicz participated as
part of the Garden State Council
to attend the jamboree held at the
Summit, Bechtel Reserve in
Mount Hope, W. Va.
This was the first year the Na-
tional Scout Jamboree was held
at its new permanent home at the
Summit, and it will be held every
four years.
Attendance was projected at
50,000. Scouts, volunteers and
staff from all over the country
were present. The gathering was
an opportunity for the Scouts to
camp, meet new friends, partici-
pate in high-adventure activities
and enjoy the outdoors at the
Summit.
The Boy Scouts fundraised to
attend the 2013 National Scout
Jamboree through local road
cleanups, selling popcorn, work-
ing at Pine Belt Sportsman's Club
and running a tent at the Atsion
Day Flea Market.
The Summit is better known as
an adventure center for its
climbing, mountain biking,
scuba, zip lines, white water raft-
ing, archery and stadium shows.

Library offers
incentive program
for children
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
As the end of summer nears,
its time to crack that reading list
you may have avoided, or finish
the list youve started.
The Pinelands Library, located
in Medford, also serves the neigh-
boring towns of Shamong, Taber-
nacle, Southampton and Wood-
land.
This summer, kids have been
reading more than ever.
The library offered an incen-
tive program based on time spent
reading. After four hours, the
kids in the program received
prizes, according to youth servic-
es librarian Danielle Haubrich.
This year was a record-break-
ing summer for the library,
Haubrich said.
Books that have, or are going to
be, turned into movies grabbed
the attention of young adult and
children readers.
The Hunger Games books
are really popular, Haubrich
said. Divergent is being turned
into a movie, and kids are reading
the first two books in that series.
Haubrich suggests both books
for readers who want to be
hooked into a good series.
The Percy Jackson series has
always been popular, according to
please see KIDS, page 4
Dougherty, 15, will never forget
this experience; he helped build a
NASCAR, and had the opportuni-
ty to meet NASCAR driver Scott
Scotty Lagasse, Jr. at the Sum-
mit.
I am very happy I got to go to
the first Jamboree, Dougherty
said.
While at the Jamboree, two
boys earned badges for kayaking,
and three earned badges for engi-
neering.
The boys also won a messenger
of peace award for working to-
gether at a nearby school. They
helped clean up a playground at
the school and install new mulch.
Levy, 16, an Eagle Scout with
Indian Mills Troop 47, had the op-
portunity to work as an assistant
base camp director for one day
while at the National Scout Jam-
boree.
Looking back over his experi-
ence, his most memorable project
was his Eagle Scout project,
Gaga Pit, an Israeli version of
dodge ball.
Boy Scouts of Americas mis-
sion is to offer an educational pro-
gram for boys to develop their
character and leadership skills,
and participate in citizenship ac-
tivities as well as progress in a
personal fitness regimen.
Bergdoll, 13, says he definitely
wants to go back to the National
Scout Jamboree in four years.
Bergdoll said being a part of the
Boy Scouts has always meant
doing a good thing.
The Garden State Council is a
local council led by the Boy
Scouts of America in Southern
New Jersey.
The Council is chartered by the
National Council of the Boy
Scouts of America, and provides
support for the scouts.
Jacob Uscinowicz, 15, has al-
ready started working toward be-
coming an Eagle Scout. Meeting
people from all over was the high-
light of his trip out to the Nation-
al Scout Jamboree.
I enjoy making new friends
and helping the community, he
said.
I would like to go back in four
years. The best part of my experi-
ence was the scenery of the
area, said Aaron Uscinowicz, 13,
currently working on becoming
an Eagle Scout.
I enjoy serving my communi-
ty.

Haubrich. The books have been
turned into a movie recently as
well.
Kids just love series they can
sink their teeth in. When they
find something they like, they
want to read a ton more,
Haubrich said. The parents like
it, too. It keeps them reading.
The program will end on Aug.
16. On Aug. 20, kids who partici-
pated in the program are invited
to celebrate their reading accom-
plishments at Freedom Park.
Were thanking them for par-
ticipating and all the reading they
did over the summer, Haubrich
said.
Haubrich hates to say it, but
the negative attention the library
has received may have con-
tributed to the popularity of the
library this summer.
The back-and-forth between
the county and the township con-
cerned residents about the li-
brarys fate, as expressed at nu-
merous council meetings. The
township council emphasized the
library will not close.
In May, council members, in
addition to township manager
Chris Schultz, and Burlington
County staff member Ralph
Shrom, met with Freeholder
Leah Arter to discuss the library,
according to Mayor Frank
Czekay.
It was productive, Czekay
said in May. We agreed to move
forward and agreed to draft plans
for their project.
Arter previously agreed to pro-
vide a $30,000 reimbursement for
maintenance, cleaning and utili-
ties. In addition, Arter has been
proposing an improvement proj-
ect that includes a significant up-
grade to the Allen Avenue library.
It definitely put us on peoples
radar, and people are using our
resources, which we love,
Haubrich said.
In addition to childrens inter-
est in the library and the reading
program, adults have been spend-
ing time in the library, rounding
out their own lists.
According to reference librari-
an Adam Crockett, books-to-
screen series have been incredi-
bly popular.
Song of Ice and Fire by
George RR Martin, and the inspi-
ration for the HBO series Game
of Thrones has a long waiting
list.
We cannot keep that book on
the shelf, its so popular, Crock-
ett said.
The library also carries comics
and graphic novels including
The Walking Dead, and DC
Comics.
Crockett also recommends
some nonfiction books, including
The Feud: The Hatfields and Mc-
Coys: The True Story by Dean
King. The Hatfields and McCoys
have been the inspiration for a
History Channel miniseries, pro-
viding the book-to-screen experi-
ence with a nonfiction back-
ground.
The book itself was good. It
goes back to about 10 to 15 years
before the Civil War started,
when the feud began, Crockett
said.
The summer has also brought
interest in travel and planning
trips.
Were always pointing people
to our travel section, Haubrich
said.
The library offers an entire sec-
tion dedicated to New Jersey and
the surrounding area if anything
more than a day trip is too much
a few weeks before school.
The New Jersey section is
filled with books of hiking guides
and other natural locations, in ad-
dition to historical nonfiction on
the state.
There are books with attrac-
tions about an hour outside of
Philadelphia if you dont want to
plan on going too far away,
Haubrich said.
Whether youre traveling to the
beach or headed to your back-
yard, guests have the ability to
borrow books on their E-readers.
This summer, so many more
people have been coming in for
their Kindle or their iPad,
Haubrich said.
Harness the last few weeks of
summer with a good read.

to borrow digitally, events at the
library and more information,

Second public meeting road
show to be held Aug. 14
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly announced
that the second public meeting
road-show will be held on
Wednesday, Aug.14 at 7 p.m. at the
Mt. Laurel Municipal Building,
100 Mt. Laurel Road.
As part of the Transparency
Plan that Donnelly initiated in
the beginning of the year, the
Freeholder Board has been tak-
ing some of its meetings on the
road to towns in various locations
around the county.
The first road show meeting
was held in June in Burlington
Township.
The meeting was a huge suc-
cess with more than 60 residents
in attendance.
We want to make sure that all
of our residents have the opportu-
nity to be a part of county govern-
ment, Donnelly said. Taking
meetings to different parts of the
county will give folks an opportu-
nity to attend meetings in their
home towns.
Additional road shows are
being planned and will be an-
nounced once details are final-
ized.

ew Jersey is a gambling state.
Always has been even before
Resorts International opened
its doors as the first legal casino in At-
lantic City in 1978.
Weve had gambling politicians,
gambling speak-easy owners and gam-
bling residents from the beginning.
We embrace the culture.
Atlantic City, to us, isnt some for-
bidden place where only degenerates
and low-lifes go to satiate a fix. Its a
place where adults, young and old, go
to stay and play.
Casinos are part of our upbringing.
Whether we frequent them or not,
theyre always in our minds. They
highlight the skyline of the coast and
hog a significant portion of our news.
So its no surprise that New Jersey
wants more.
This year, gaming in the state will
enter a new dimension when a ban on
internet gambling is lifted. 888 Hold-
ings, a London-based gaming compa-
ny, will provide its technology to Cae-
sars Interactive Entertainment and
will also launch operations under its
own brand later this year.
The company is doing the same in
Nevada and Delaware, two states,
which maybe not coincidentally
have the other thing that New Jersey
wants: Sports gambling.
Just last week, Congressmen Frank
LoBiondo and Frank Pallone hit the
campaign trail for sports gambling
in Atlantic City, professing the need
for two bills they re-introduced in Feb-
ruary.
Theres a federal ban on the practice
in states not named Nevada, Delaware,
Oregon and Montana, but these legis-
lators and others in the state are
hoping to overturn that law. The Third
Circuit Court of Appeals is currently
hearing an appeal regarding it.
Legal and gaming experts say they
feel fairly certain that, at some point,
the federal law will be overturned and
sports betting will be legal in New Jer-
sey.
And we cant wait for that day. Not
because we want to place a sports bet
legally at a window in Atlantic City,
exactly, but because it will finally help
end the hypocrisy around the discus-
sion. Millions, maybe even billions, of
dollars are being bet on sports in this
country every year, most of it illegally.
Why its OK to do so in Nevada, or as
close as Delaware, and not New Jersey,
is beyond our comprehension.
If we can have casinos that are high-
ly regulated by an independent agency,
why cant we also have betting on
sports? Its a practice that makes sense
to legalize, tax and control.
Ready to gamble (some more)
Now is not the time for New Jersey to fold em in fight for more gambling

expansion of gambling offerings in New

Committeeman shares experience with former mayor
Editors note: The following is an excerpt
from a column sent in by Committeeman
Kenneth Long. For the full version, visit
www.shamongsun.com.
Shamong Township has lost one of its
great mayors. Jonathon Shevelew has re-
tired after serving the folks here for many
years. Jon, who retired from his profession-
al career in the late 1990s, has finally re-
tired from public service. Shamong was the
recipient of a mayor who generously gave
his time to serve us in a way that will be
hard to come by in the future. He served us
in many ways and always unconditionally.
From serving on the Rent Control Board to
the Planning and Zoning boards to the
IMAA and Township Committee, Jon knew
almost all of us in town by name. As mayor,
he used the office to make sure we had shel-
ter during Hurricane Sandy, and ensured
that our children had the best baseball and
soccer fields in the state, if not the country.
He enabled leaders in various organiza-
tions in town to fulfill their goals of serving
us in myriad ways. Shamong will miss
Jonathon Shevelew and all that he did for
us.
The one aspect of working with Jon that
I immediately picked up on after I was
elected was serving Shamong as a commit-
teeman was an act of humility and one of a
great honor to serve the folks who live in
town. Since our town has a very low local
purpose tax and has had to endure reduc-
tion in revenues, including the state reduc-
ing its payment for Wharton State Forest,
the job of mayor in Shamong has meant
keeping property taxes to a minimum,
fighting to keep the services we have come
to expect at the highest level they can be,
and making sure we as residents are taken
care of fiscally. Jon has done all of that and
more. Here are a few of the areas Mayor
Shevelew served us: He set up the Shamong
Township website; www.shamong.net.
Under his leadership, Jon opened a local

Owned and Operated From Historic Haddonfield
Long: Mayor was a
practical, patient man
shelter during Hurricane Sandy
at the Indian Mills Memorial
School. He kept everyone in-
formed during the large forest
fires we have experienced over the
past 10 years. A major initiative
that Mayor Shevelew led for our
and other towns was in the legal
battle in stopping the state from
imposing new taxes for State Po-
lice coverage. We were victorious
in that fight, and Jon helped save
us and other towns thousands of
dollars a year in possible tax in-
creases.
Mayor Shevelew served as
deputy mayor or mayor during
his nine years of service in addi-
tion to serving for many years as a
member of the Rent Control
Board, Indian Mills Athletic Asso-
ciation Board, coaching our
youth, and planning boards. All in
all, by the time Jon became our
mayor, he knew almost every facet
of our governing structures and
who served and who needed to be
served. The Jon Shevelew I got to
know is a practical, patient and al-
most always smiling man. If he
ever lost his temper, it had to be
after being brow beaten for longer
than most anyone of us could
stand it.
And it would always be for a
good reason. There were times
when I thought I would be lam-
basted after putting my foot in my
mouth, but instead, Jon would
just come to me and tell me that
maybe next time I should think
about what I need to say before I
say it, but always in a kind but
firm manner. I have learned a lot
from him. I know all of us have
gained from his being mayor and
servant to Shamong.
