Destination anywhere
From an early age I had a dream to see the world. When I first travelled abroad, to London, I realised that my ultimate aspiration was to experience other cultures from the inside out, says Elena Andrews FCCA.
Growing up in Moscow, Russia, I chose a career in audit. It offered unparalleled opportunities for international mobility and I never looked back. Elena graduated with a masters degree in economics and joined the Moscow office of Arthur Andersen as an analyst in assurance and business advisory services. Two years later, as an audit senior, I was successful in securing an offer for a transfer to Andersens New York office. I lived and breathed the Big Apple and spent over half of my office time travelling the country from coast to coast. It was the most challenging and rewarding period of my professional life to date. Elenas time in New York was followed by time in Auckland as an assurance services specialist. Elena spent seven years working in audit with Deloitte, followed by a senior role with TOWER group an insurance, investment and wealth management provider as financial controller. In 2011 the travel bug struck Elena again and she moved to Sydney, Australia. Shortly after moving to Sydney an opportunity to join Virgin Money Australia came along, where Elena has taken up the post of financial controller. This has taken her one step nearer to achieving her ultimate career goal to lead a large successful business. Its becoming more common now that the path to chief executive officer lies via finance. ACCA gave me a chance to travel the world, and provided me with a unique edge when it comes to competing for senior management roles. As a professional accountant with diverse and extensive experience you are in demand no matter where you want to go. In January 2011 I was appointed as a member of the Committee of Professional Accountants in Business for the International Federation of Accountants. Its a great honour and a big responsibility. Im thrilled to be able to work with other like-minded professionals from around the world and to share my experience and knowledge. Elena remembers when she received the letter that confirmed she could put the letters ACCA after her name. It gave me a great sense of achievement and reward. In todays professional firms, getting qualified means an almost guaranteed promotion and salary review. If youre considering studying ACCA, I would say absolutely go for it. Getting the ACCA Qualification was one of the key decisions that I made in my career. ACCA is well known and respected in over 170 countries, explains Elena. It will open doors for you, as it did for me. All it takes is a little dedication and focus while studying and then you will only be limited by the level of your personal ambition. Good luck for the future.
THE ACCA QUALIFICATION WILL GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE IN YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS AS WELL AS FLEXIBILITY IN YOUR CAREER OPTIONS.

The role of financial controller is a multi-faceted one. The main responsibility is to provide support to the business in its day-to-day operations as well as future growth. Good financial control systems are the controls that people do not need to think or worry about. They work in the background and do not require a lot of ongoing attention. Ensuring that the business is supported and safeguarded by sound controls systems and ensuring that the basics are right, allows the financial controller and the finance team as a whole to focus on providing financial analysis and modelling assistance to the business as well as financial projections, budgets and forecasts, ie activities that add visible value to an organisation.

Firm foundations
Having completed his accounting degree in the UK in 2004, Oliver Smith decided to move to New Zealand with his partner and the intention of completing a six-month working holiday. However, they both fell in love with the country and soon found themselves quickly applying for residency and jobs.
After a couple of temporary roles in various accounting functions I found myself working as assistant accountant at ACB, a reasonably large chain of backpackers with operations throughout New Zealand, explains Oliver. After working there for a year I moved to an analyst role at Telecom New Zealand. The industry is so fast paced that I found it a fantastic place to complete my ACCA Qualification, whilst also being able to try out a good variety of different roles with varying degrees of requirements around finance. Oliver chose to study for the ACCA Qualification above other professional accountancy qualifications because it offered the greatest flexibility for me to choose how and when I studied and which exams I took. Also, although I plan to stay in New Zealand for a good while longer yet, there is always a chance I will end up moving to Australia or back to the UK. Having my qualification recognised in these countries will make the transition much easier. Studying for the ACCA Qualification wasnt without its challenges for Oliver. At the time I was taking my exams, there wasnt really an established student network in New Zealand or places to go and study. So I relied on self study to prepare for the exams. I do prefer this method of study anyway, so it wasnt a major hurdle for me, but I was still relieved when I passed my final exams. It was hard work but worth it. I was in the UK at the time and out with friends so we celebrated in style with a bottle of champagne! Oliver has worked for Telecom New Zealand in various roles since 2006 and is now senior portfolio strategy manager. In this role he is responsible for guiding the senior management of Telecom in developing and implementing the long term business strategy. Helping decide what products to sell, what technologies to build, what the competition looks like, how the political environment will play out is all in a days work for Oliver. It requires a combination of an analytical mindset to understand the dynamics of the industry, with a high level of critical thinking. Although I have moved away from finance into a more strategic role, I have always found having the ACCA Qualification and a good understanding of finance has given me a really strong grounding in every role I do. I suspect ultimately I may have found myself in a similar role to where I am now, but I think without the ACCA Qualification I would definitely be a few years behind in terms of seniority, salary and influence. Oliver has the following advice for anyone starting out as a trainee accountant. Dont think that an accounting qualification pigeonholes you into an accounting role in the long term. Todays accountants are incredibly versatile and can easily move into any other business discipline such as strategy or marketing. Just look at me as an example. The ACCA Qualification has given me more credibility and greater confidence when talking about financial matters. It has also opened up other doors that would normally require an MBA or similar qualification.
DONT THINK THAT AN ACCOUNTING QUALIFICATION PIGEONHOLES YOU INTO AN ACCOUNTING ROLE ... TODAYS ACCOUNTANTS ARE INCREDIBLY VERSATILE AND CAN EASILY MOVE INTO ANY OTHER BUSINESS DISCIPLINE.

Thinking big
I was working at KPMG Tanzania when I completed my ACCA exams. I wanted to give something back so I tutored five ACCA students through to qualification. All of them now work for the Big Four. A highlight for me was that I also met my wife in the process, says Hussein Hussein FCCA.
Two-and-a-half years into his career at KPMG Tanzania, Hussein was approached by Standard Chartered Bank. He joined as head of internal audit. I loved the job, but the culture didnt suit me, explains Hussein. I wanted to move back into accounting, so in 2003 I moved to KPMG Dubai to specialise in banking audit and advisory. He was in charge of Citibank, HSBC and Standard Chartered Bank audits and gained a lot of valuable experience. I moved to Melbourne in 2005 and joined Deloitte, says Hussein. He specialised in financial instrument advisory and two years later was given the opportunity to start up a similar service offering in Sydney. It was a huge success and led to me being admitted to Deloitte partnership in 2009. Along with tutoring back in Tanzania, setting up the financial instruments advisory services in Sydney are the proudest achievements of my career to date. I started the team alone in 2007 and now its a team of 14 highly skilled young professionals. A typical day at work for Hussein starts at 7am. Between 9 and 5.30pm he has back-to-back meetings. They typically involve discussing solutions for clients with my team, providing client service and staff training, and also focusing on new product innovation and following up on new leads. At 5.30, I review work and client reports for a couple of hours before heading home. Hussein studied his ACCA Qualification at a college in Nairobi, Kenya. I relied a lot on ACCA approved books, revision kits, and ACCAs student magazine and website. I passed all my papers at the first attempt by focusing on the content of the syllabuses. I didnt work while studying until the final three papers, even though this would have put my studies into context and would have enabled me to achieve membership sooner. But I enjoyed every minute. I put my exam success down to thorough preparation. One month before each exam session, I focused on only the revision kits and practised past exam papers from the previous five years twice and then did mock exams. If youre considering a career in finance and accounting, I can assure you that you wont regret it its a fantastic career choice and the ACCA syllabus prepares you to work in any industry or sector, and it has worldwide recognition. My advice is to select a career which you have a passion for. Qualifying is tough, but thats only a reflection of the quality. But the exams are fair. And passing is not a game of chance if you study hard. So make it all worthwhile by achieving the career of your dreams. ACCA is the only qualification I have. Ive used it at every stage of my career and it was easy to get a job in any country that Ive lived in. Ten years from now I hope to be a senior technical partner with Deloitte in Australia, leading a team of professionals that are the envy of all other firms.

FROM TEXTBOOK TO REAL LIFE Just after I finished the ACCA Qualification, my brother-in-law wanted a business valuation done prior to accepting a take-over proposal. I offered to help at the time with no prior working experience in corporate finance or business valuation But I felt confident of the knowledge gained from my ACCA studies. So I used the knowledge I had gained to come up with a discounted cashflow model that estimated the value of the business including the goodwill. Meanwhile, the buyers engaged one of the Big Four firms to carry out the business valuation. The value of the business was in the range of plus or minus 10% of the valuation I arrived at! I was very pleased!
