T h e sea going fishermen population in the s t a t e

is 1 . 5 7 lakhs . Unlike t h e general population there is p r e p o n d e r a n c e o f m a l e s in t h e p o p u l a t i o n o f fishermen.

It

is observed that the proportion o f persons is 6 0 . 3 0 marine

in the age group of work force and dependents percent and 3 9 . 7 0 percent respectively. Among

fishermen the work force is 59.53 percent and among inland fishermen it is 6 3 . 2 p e r c e n t .

Literacy and educational attainments are the i n d i c a t o r s o f q u a l i t a t i v e i m p r o v e m e n t s in h u m a n r e s o u r c e s . Even though economically and socially considered t o be backward, t h e fishermen a r e n o t lagging much behind i n

e d u c a t i o n . N e a r l y 6 3 p e r c e n t o f t h e males and 5 9 p e r c e n t
of the females are literate.The male and female literacy rates

o f t h e general p o p u l a t i o n a r e 7 5 . 2 6 per cent and 6 5 . 7 3 p e r cent respectively.
