s Association Hall of Fame. Janie Barner, Adams High School, German 51 Adams German students took the Advanced Placement Test. 39 students are traveling to Germany this summer to attend school and live with host families. 19 Adams students placed in the 90th percentile for the National German Exam. 47 German students are members of the Delta Epsilon Phi Chapter which is the National Honor Society for German. The AHS Foreign Language Week annual fundraiser generated $8,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Wendy Beitel, McGregor, Learning Consultant 2007 recipient of the Geri Stone Memorial Scholarship to attend the National Literacy Conference. Ms. Stone was an active leader and a major advocate for Reading Recovery and this fund provided financial awards to help continue her work and RRCNAs mission: "We open doors to a literate future for children who initially struggle in learning to read and write." Cindy Bjornson, Hampton, 2nd Grade Co-president of the Hampton PTA from 1997 1999 and was nominated for the National PTA Hearst Outstanding Educator Award. In 1998 was selected as one of the top teachers statewide to contribute to a project that identified Best Practices of Technology Integration in Michigan. In 2001 I was recognized at PTA Founders Day and won a Founders Day Excellence in Education Award in 2013. Two-time honoree by Whos Who in American Teachers. 2005 nominee for the Michigan Teacher of the Year. Dan Bliss, Stoney Creek High School, English/Student Council Adviser A student council student has received a Michigan Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies (MASC/MAHS) award of excellence for the seven years Mr. Bliss has been the adviser. Three SCHS students have received MASC/MAHS awards for exceptional service projects. SCHS Students have received star awards for keeping our school active in the MASC/MAHS for seven years. Four SCHS students have been elected to the state board of delegates for MASC/MAHS. Presently, SCHS students are applying to become nationally certified student council members. Along with Kelley Cusmano, Rochester High School Student Council Adviser, and her students the two schools co-hosted the MASC/MAHS conference in Traverse City in the spring of 2013. Thomas Blue, Adams/Van Hoosen, Vocal Music Master's degree plus coursework for a Ph.D. at MSU.
Numerous students currently practicing in the field as music teachers/conductors and on Broadway. Mentored and am currently mentoring choir teachers in the state. Current adjudicator/clinician for Middle School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) and have worked with choirs from around the state. Full board member for American Choral Directors Association-Michigan as junior high and middle school Repertoire and Standards Chair. Served as JH/MS representative for MSVMA. Cited numerous times in Marquis Who's Who. Cited for being a Middle School WDIV Channel 4 Teacher of the Year by RCS, Oakland Schools, and the state legislature. Mr. Blue has presented numerous times for state organizations. Written articles for the MSVMA/ACDA state newsletters and for the Central division ACDA publication: Resound. The Adams High School Choirs have performed with the Detroit Chamber Winds, the Rochester Symphony, Cincinnati Ballet Met, Joeffrey Ballet, and the Grand Rapids Ballet productions of the Nutcracker. The AHS Choirs, Van Hoosen Choirs and the West Choirs (when Mr. Blue taught there) have consistently represented the district at district and state choral festivals. AHS choir members consistently represent the district at district and state solo/ensemble festivals. Van Hoosen Choirs have performed for the Lansing Lugnuts. West Choirs under Mr. Blues direction performed numerous times at the state capitol and were given a citation by the legislature
Kitty Bodell, Reuther, Math 2011-12 Recipient of Pino Insurance Agency/MEEMIC Excellence in Education Award. Debbie Bovio, Adams High School, Art Published art lessons and art-related articles at www.pbs.org. Published art lessons and art-related articles in the trade magazine Arts and Activities. Founder of the website www.studentATC.com which promotes classroom to classroom Artist Trading Card exchanges worldwide. To date there are over 200 members from eight countries. Beth Bowerman, Van Hoosen Middle School, Science Van Hoosens Science Olympiad team, under Mrs. Bowermans guidance, has ranked in the top 10 schools in the Oakland County Regionals six years in a row and went to the State Finals at Michigan State University last year. Amanda Brzezicki, Van Hoosen Middle School, French Madame Brzezicki lived abroad in France instructing English for two years before becoming a French teacher at Van Hoosen.
Has helped organize and chaperone the districts middle school French program to Quebec, Canada for six days.
Jessica Buchheister, West Middle School, School Social Worker Is President of the Michigan Association of School Social Workers (MASSW). Ms. Buchheister also lobbies in Washington, D.C. each year. Tracy Bullock, Stoney Creek High School, School Social Worker Has published a training manual on how to help children with special needs grieve and cope with crisis. Business Professionals of America (BPA) Current Advisers: Adams HS Dan Carruthers and Tom Mavis; Rochester HS Laure Gambaro and Karen Malsbury; Stoney Creek HS Kathleen Ford and Suzanne Kuhn. Currently over 250 student participants between the three high schools. RCS has consistently been nationally-ranked in Financial Analyst, Global Marketing, Presentation Management, Small Business Management, Video Production, and Economic Research for the past 10 years. RCS has had over 25 Top 3 National student finishes in Desktop Publishing, Computerized Accounting, Banking & Finance, Fundamental Accounting, Graphic Design Promotion, Economic Research, Excel Spreadsheet, and Interview Skills. 2009 Outstanding BPA adviser of the year for the State of Michigan. 2009 Michigan BPA Top Student Scholarship winner. 2008 and 2010 National BPA Student Scholarship winner. Currently have the BPA Michigan President serving from Rochester High School. Todd Calcamugglio, Hugger, Phys Ed Hugger students raised over $4000 for the American Heart Association through Jump Rope for the Heart that Mr. Calcamugglio runs. As a whole, Rochester Community Schools raised the second most amount by a district in the state. Mr. Calcamugglio was honored with a PTSA Founders Day Award in 2012-13, his first with Hugger. Emily Collier, Meadow Brook, 5th Grade As part of the leadership of the Oakland County Reading Council, Mrs. Collier helped create the Young Authors event for students grades 3-5 to come and present what they were learning about writing as well as a finished piece of fictional writing. Many of the participants were RCS students. Races for girls with Retts Syndrome. Mr. Dalton has participated in a variety of community events with his students to fundraise for Retts. In 2012-13 school year Mr. Dalton and his students raised $8,000 when he raced I the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon. Thus far in 2013-14, Mr. Dalton and his students have raised $10,000 to date. Mr. Dalton will be racing in the Lake Placid (NY) Ironman.
Erica Davis-Hernandez, Stoney Creek High School, Art Recipient of the Robert Rauschenberg Power of Art Grant. Past presenter at Michigan Art Educator Association statewide conference. Past presenter at Arts First!. Lois Davis, Stoney Creek High School, Design and Technology Is Career and Technical Education (CTE) certified and has a vocational certification because she formerly worked as an engineer in industry. Every year RCS receives money for each student in her class; last year this amount exceeded $40,000 have worked as an Engineer in industry before becoming a teacher. Every year the state gives the district a considerable amount of money for each student in my class up to a maximum of 22 students per hour. Last year this amount was over $40,000. Paul Diegel, West Middle School, Phys Ed 2009 inductee to the Michigan Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame for his work as Troy HS baseball coach. Amanda Dittforth, Van Hoosen Middle School, German Frau Dittforth lived in Germany for one year prior to becoming a German teacher at Van Hoosen. Laura Duff, Reuther, English Language Arts 2012-13 Recipient of Pino Insurance Agency/MEEMIC Excellence in Education Award. Organized the Honeywell Car Toy Company enrichment program at RMS with a follow-up visit by the Honeywell officials.
James Ferden, Adams High School, Instrumental Music Post-Graduate study in Conducting at Oakland University. Regularly teaches 5-6 unique preps each year. Active trumpet player who performs with area music organizations (band, orchestra, school & community theatre, etc.). Regular collaboration with K-12 music faculty across the district. Sparkle Award recipient (exemplary support of students with special needs). Founders Day Award recipient (significant contributions in the best interest of students by giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential). Bands (Concert Band, Symphony Band, Wind Ensemble, Highlander Marching Band) consistently receive top ratings at MSBOA District & State Festivals.

Christine Forster, Van Hoosen, English Language Arts/Software Applications Mrs. Forster had one student win the VFW Post 334 Patriots Pen Essay Contest and another earned honorable mention. The winner also placed second in the regional competition. Both students won small cash awards. Jeffrey Fosnaugh, ACE, Math Mr. Fosnaugh was a Fulbright Scholarship recipient for the 2000-2001 school year. During this year, Mr. Fosnaugh taught in England for the year while living in his counterpart from England taught here. Annually there are over 1,000 applications and only 80 winners. Judy Freels, Stoney Creek High School, Information Literacy Specialist Serves on the Oakland County Library Media Leadership Council. Megan Gaura, Brewster, 3rd Grade Mrs. Gaura coaches the YMCA program Girls on the Run for 3rd-5th grade girls at Brewster. She co-runs the Community Service Kids program at Brewster. Mrs. Gaura attended the 2013 summer training at OISD for Common Core State Standards Everyday Mathematics alignment and has been planning and running the 3rd grade district professional development this year. Jeff Gehm, Delta Kelly, 5th Grade Mr. Gehm was recently featured in The Oakland Press highlighting his contributions to the Delta Kelly students through his work with the Delta Kelly Community Kids program. This group has recently sent notes and candy to U.S. military stationed overseas. Tiffany Goliday, Hamlin, 3rd Grade Named The Oakland Press Teacher of the Week during the 2012-13 school year. Was instrumental in switching positions for Eric Fisher from tight end to offensive tackle which led to a college scholarship to Central Michigan University and, ultimately, led to Fisher to being the first pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Other REA members who also coached Fisher include H.G. Schultz and Ken Troy (at Hart Middle School) and Aaron Lougheed and Don Wilson (Stoney Creek). Mr. Gross is also a Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve and is currently serving a full-year tour of active duty in South Korea.

Jeff Howell, Van Hoosen Middle School, Phys Ed Coach of the 8th grade boys basketball team that had Owen Groesser a student with Downs Syndrome who made a pair of 3-pointers late in the season and wound up highlighted on ESPNs SportsCenter. Lisa Inza, Adams High School, French All Level 5 French students took the Advanced Placement Exam. 40 French students traveled to Quebec summer 2013. 25 French students are traveling to France summer 2014. Over 30 current French students are members of National French Honor Society (La Socit Honoraire de Franais, Charter # 4194, AHS). Rich Jackle, Long Meadow, School Psychologist Prior to joining Rochester Community Schools 25 years ago, Mr. Jackle worked for 13 years in both special education as well as community mental health. He has earned his PhD in Educational Psychology from Wayne State University and also holds a Masters Degree in Applied Behavioral Psychology from Western Michigan University as well as a Masters Degree in School and Community Psychology from Wayne State. Damon Keith. The topic of the evenings conversation was race relations. Kathy Johnson, West, English/French Has helped organize and chaperone the districts middle school French program to Quebec, Canada for six days. Judy Joy, North Hill, 4th Grade Dr. Joy earned her Ed D in Curriculum in 1996.
Lisa Kelley, University Hills, Instructional Literacy Specialist Attended a United States Library of Congress summer institute to learn how to teach with primary sources. Mrs. Kelley later went on to teach what she learned at a state level professional conference (MACUL-Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning). Serves on the Oakland County Library Media Leadership Council. Serves on the regional board of our state association and am President-Elect of Michigan Association of Media in Education (Region 17). Kim Kelly, West Middle School, Math While teaching 5th grade at Delta Kelly earlier in her career, Ms. Kelly wrote to the writers of the TV show Monk about the writing process of mysteries. Show producer Andy Breckman came to the school and spent over an hour with the students discussing writing. To this day, Ms. Kelly invites students to a free after-school program to write celebrities requesting autographs and over 60 photos are displayed in her room. Diane Kosuda, Van Hoosen Middle School, Science Participated in the Northrop Grumman Foundation Weightless Flights of Discovery Program in 2009 Richard Krause, Brooklands, 1st Grade Recipient of the Best Male Involvement Award 2013 from the Michigan PTA for the Mentorship Club The Junior Bears Den at Brooklands Elementary. Robert Kroll, West, Instrumental Music Dozens of students currently practicing in the field of music education or performing. Instructor/ Performer at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for 20 years. 100+ wins as a middle school wrestling coach, including students who were State Champions, County Champs and numerous state medals. West Bands have been given the highest ratings at State Festivals, performed for the Governor, performances at the State Capitol and at the Detroit Jazz Festival in Hart Plaza, plus numerous community events. Mr. Kroll has taken the band every year to Chicago for top level clinics. Mr. Kroll has had a student representative in the MSBOA All-State Band each year. 2013 Mr. Kroll contracted Brian Balmages to compose a work for West MS 50th Birthday. Mr. Kroll has donated percussion to programs in Macomb County to help with abused children. Current Past President of District 16 for Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. Has also served on many state committees for this organization. Has been a board member for 20 years. Member of the American School Band Directors Association, a national honors organization bestowed on the best in the field. Mr. Kroll has presented numerous times for the Michigan Music Educator Conference.
Past presenter for Arts First!. Mr. Kroll has served on district committees for Middle School Revisited and Best Grading Policies. Mr. Kroll has received district honors for assisting/teaching at Adams and Rochester HS while new directors were introduced. Mr. Kroll is a performer/composer/arranger of music in the Midwest. Performances have been recorded for public consumption and have been played on National Public Radio with groups including Motown and jazz greats. Mr. Kroll has been commissioned by RHS bands and the Jessica Rogers Foundation for his compositions. His RHS Fanfare has been performed every game by the RHS bands since 1995. Mr. Krolls composition "Native Dances" was performed by the West bands in 2013 for its 50th birthday.

Awarded a National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) fellowship for the 2012-13 school year. Mrs. Mammen was one of 650 selected nationwide for the intensive yearlong professional development. It culminated with four days at the NSTA national conference in San Antonio, TX.
Gayle Martin, Stoney Creek High School, English Language Arts/Journalism The Stoney Creek High School newspaper, The Source, has been awarded "All-American" status by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) for the past six years. The Source has also achieved either a Gold ranking or a Spartan Award (the highest award) from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) since its inception in 2003-2004. Students on the staff have been named to the all-state newspaper staff, with one student being awarded the Michigan Newspaper Student of the Year award. Student work has earned numerous individual state awards and has also been awarded Design of the Year and Story of the Year awards from NSPA. Mrs. Martin currently serves as the Curriculum Chair of the MIPA. Graduates have gone on to work on or edit college newspapers such as The Michigan Daily, the State News, and the Albion Pleiad. In addition, students who have worked on The Source have gone on to get internships or jobs at various media outles such as The Detroit Free Press, Elle Magazine, The Huffington Post, and WDIV Channel 4 News. Typically 100% of SCHS AP Language and Composition students take the AP test. The AP test pass rate has always been over 90% with the SCHS group mean at least 10 points higher than the global mean in both the multiple choice and the essay sections. In the AP test writing section, typically 50% of SCHS students score in the top quartile, as compared to 25% of students globally. Mrs. Martin was awarded the RCS PTSA "Leading from Heart" Founder's Day Award in 20102011.

Julia Satthertwaite, Rochester High School, English/Journalism The Talon newspaper has been named a Pacemaker Finalist (one of just three from Michigan) by the National Scholastic Press Association. Mrs. Satterthwaite is the president of the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA). The Talon has earned three straight Spartan Awards from MIPA (the highest award in the state). During her six years as newspaper teacher there have been over 20 individual awards in writing, design, and photography. H.G. Schultz, Hart Middle School, Social Studies Mr. Schultz and his fellow Hart track coaches run a concession stand at track meets. The money raised allows the HMS track program to award a $500 college scholarship annually to graduating seniors that ran track in middle school. Christine Sisoler, West Middle School, Learning Consultant Mrs. Sisoler was chosen to be on the Pearson Participatory Design Committee to give input into the SuccessMaker version 5 program. She also traveled throughout the United States with fellow REA member Joy Gruits (now retired) speaking about West and Reuther's intervention programs as part of being selected to receive Pearson's Digital Best Practice award in 2011. Judy Stein, North Hill, 2nd Grade Mrs. Steins former student, Danny Glazier, successfully wrote and published his book If I Had 100 Pockets with Mrs. Steins encouragement and guidance. Jessica Stickel, Meadow Brook Elementary, 2nd Grade Is the secretary of the Oakland County Reading Council Bethany Strausbaugh, Hart Middle School, Social Studies As the Media Specialist at Long Meadow Elementary for eight years Mrs. Strausbaugh received grant money totaling $9,500. Organizations that supported and funded these initiatives were: RCS Foundation, Target, Best Buy, and EDS. These programs included student materials such as Educational Technologies (iPods, Audiobooks, Podcasting tools, News Broadcasting, etc), Computer Software (Computer Lab Demonstration), and Library Books for the Long Meadow Media Center collection. Joanne Teitler, Brooklands, Interventionist In May 2013, Dr. Teitler completed a one-year training program to become a certified Reading Recovery teacher. In 2009 Dr. Teitler began working with the Michigan Citizen Collaborative Curriculum (MC3) Project. She wrote the 1st Grade social studies curriculum units that are currently being used by Rochester Community Schools and many other districts around the state. Earned her PhD from Oakland University in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in Multicultural Studies in 2008. Dr. Teitlers dissertation, Toward a Developmentally and Culturally Appropriate Early Childhood Classroom: The Teacher Experience is available through Google Books. Served as adjunct faculty at Oakland University Fall 2008 for the Masters-level FE 509 The Family, Child, and Learning in a Cultural Context. 2001 conducted a focus group of MLPP trainers to evaluate the MLPP. Results of this focus group were published in the February 2002 issue of the Michigan Department of Education Report to the Legislature.
Eric Thuma, Stoney Creek High School, Physics Has earned two Masters degrees: one in Education and one in Computational Astrophysics Has research experience from the NASA Glenn Research Center, the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, the NASA Heliophysics Projects Division, the Arecibo Observatory, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, and the Michigan State University Observatory Mr. Thuma was an Astronaut Candidate interviewee inOctober 2012. He was one of 120 candidates selected to interview for the 2013 NASA Astronaut Candidate Class selection. Total number of applicants for selection cycle was approximately 6,500. Mr. Thuma has been the recipient of the National Society of High School Scholars Claes Noble Educator of Distinction (2010 and 2013). Mr. Thuma and Stoney Creek HS have been recognized by NASA as 1 of 6 NASA Explorer Schools in the nation for its contributions to science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) education in the 2012-2013 school year and will receive a $5,000 grant to help implement a STEM project in their classrooms by April 2014. Mr. Thuma had a student team work on the Energetic Ray Global Observatory (ERGO) Project (2008-2012), a distributed open source cosmic ray observatory. Mr. Thumas students (2008-2012) had experiences with "Student Radio Astronomy" students engaged in the construction, calibration, and use of a small radio telescope based on the NASA Radio Jove project, "Student Cosmic Ray Physics" - students engaged in the construction and use of a scintillation based cosmic ray detector. In 2012 Mr. Thuma had students engaged in a Student Pulsar Search. Students participated in pulsar and radio astronomy research in cooperation with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Mr. Thuma had a student who were "Applications of Low Temperature Plasma"-award winner at the Annual Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit in 2010. In 2008 students were "A 3-D Lens with Alternative Unit Cell Design for Negative Refractive Index" - award winners at the Annual Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. In 2007 Mr. Thuma had a "Neutron Activation Using an Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion Reactor" - award winner at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair and the Annual Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. The student involved in this project was the 18th amateur in the world to build a fusion reactor. In 2001 Mr. Thuma was the Rochester High School Competitive Rocket Club coach. Notable achievements for the team include: Outstanding Rookie Team Award at Michigan Aeronautics Competition and Outstanding Fit and Finish Award at Michigan Aeronautics Competition. In 2000 Mr. Thuma was the Rochester High School Competitive Robotics Team coach. Mr. Thuma has also founded an annual physics field experience for students to use electronic data collection methods to provide a comprehensive analysis of the physics of amusement park rides including free fall and drop tower experimentation. He has initiated a motion analysis project for students to use high speed video and image processing software to provide a comprehensive analysis of real world physics. Finally, Mr. Thuma has designed and constructed a drop tower for students to perform microgravity experimentation.
Brandon Ulrich, Stoney Creek High School/Hart Middle School, Vocal Music Mr. Ulrich earned his PhD in Musical Arts in Conducting (Michigan State University, Fall 2013). SCHS choirs have performed at the Michigan Music Conference in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2012 2012 SCHS choirs performed at the ACDA Central Division Convention. 2010 SCHS choirs performed at the ACDA Michigan Convention. The SCHS Chamber Choir was the winner of the Magic 105.1 FM $10,000 Glee Club Contest. Robin Wieten, Adams High School, French Earned her Masters in French from prestigious Middlebury (VT) College. All Level 5 French students took the Advanced Placement Exam. 40 French students traveled to Quebec summer 2013. 25 French students are traveling to France summer 2014. Over 30 current French students are members of National French Honor Society (La Socit Honoraire de Franais, Charter # 4194, AHS). The AHS Foreign Language Week annual fundraiser generated $8,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Colleen Winkler, Adams High School, English Rochester Education Association Vice-President, 2010-present MEA/NEA Representative Assembly delegate, 2010-present. RCS high school English Language Arts Teacher Leader. AHS National Honor Society adviser. Mrs. Winkler has served on numerous district and building committees including: Adams PD Chairperson, District PD Committee, Teacher Advisory Council, Technology Coach, and the District Strategic Planning Committee. Journalism Education Association (JEA), Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) member. 28-year adviser of Rochester Adams school newspaper The Kilt, a MIPA silver award winner. Graduates have gone on to work on college newspapers including the State News and CM Life. This past year, 44 AHS students took the Advanced Placement test for English Language and Literature with 95% passing. Students who have worked on The Kilt have gone on to get internships or jobs in the journalism field including the Detroit Free Press and National Geographic. Mrs. Winkler was one of the first teachers in Michigan to speak before the state legislature in support of full inclusion. Cindy Woodard, Van Hoosen Middle School, Math Participated in the Northrop Grumman Foundation Weightless Flights of Discovery Program in 2009 Kristin Zagula, Hamlin, 2nd Grade Mrs. Zagula and her students two years ago created a non-profit charity called Classrooms Helping Kids. This charity raises money from schools/students to construct orphanages around the word. To date, te charity has raised enough money to open two homes rescuing 25 orphans and another one will open this December rescuing 12 more. Mrs. Zagula note: The children who live in these homes now have three meals per day, house parents that love them, beds to
sleep in, and access to an education, and a chance to dream about a life they never expected to be possible. Jeff Zurkan, Hart Middle School, Vocal Music Co-Director of the Macomb County Children's Choir. Chad Zwolinski, Rochester High School, History 202 of his 218 AP U.S. History students have passed the AP exam including 165 who received scores of 4 or 5. In 2012-13 71% of his students tested as among the worlds highest 33%. Mr. Zwolinski is one of six teachers across the United States co-authoring a new AP U.S. History teaching guide to be published in the next year by Gibbs Smith Publishing. Will be escorting 56 RHS students to Washington, D.C., in June 2014 along with colleague Laura Matthews as part of a Project Close-Up.
