Meredith Lindsay, ECI 430, November 8, 2013 Lesson Title: Adjectives and Short Stories Context: The language
concept being taught within the lesson is the use of adjectives. Students will be able to understand their purpose and function within sentences. They will also being able to understand how adjectives can enhance writing. This will lead students into writing their very own short story, where the use of adjectives should be evident. Primary Instructional Objectives and Common Core Standard: 1. Investigate how language can enhance writing 1.1 Classify different adjectives through a video and participation in activity 1.2 Discuss how adjectives can enhance our writing in short stories 2. Work cooperatively with peers 2.1 Discuss with peers different adjectives that describe their picture (noun) 2.2 Fulfill individual role to understand adjectives through the activity and through short stories 3. Present material orally 3.1 Share adjectives activity orally with the class 3.2 Use effective speaking skills to present adjectives activity CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.6.3: Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening. Time: 50 Minutes Instructional Procedures/Steps: 4 Minutes: Watch Flocabulary video about adjectives.
2 Minutes: Have students come to the board and write what an adjective is based off of the video. Then have another student come to the board and write the definition of a noun. 1 Minute: Describe the opening adjectives activity to students. 5 Minutes: In partners, students will be given a white piece of paper, which has a noun that has been cutout from a magazine. Students will have to use adjectives to describe the noun they were given. They can use markers to write the adjectives around the picture. 5 Minutes: Each set of partners will share out and present the adjectives they used to describe their noun picture. 20 Minutes: Students will read a short excerpt from the short story, Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. 8 minutes: With their partners, students will go back through the excerpt and pick out five sentences that use adjectives and write them down on a sheet of paper. They will then write down what the adjective describe, as well as how it affected them as a reader. 5 Minutes: Debrief as a class and talk about what we learned from the lesson. Also, discuss how adjectives could aid our writing when constructing short stories. This will be a great way to prepare students for next class. They will begin writing their own short stories. Evaluation: Evaluation of students will be through the discussion and by what they presented to class through the adjectives activity. Accommodations: If necessary, some students may have extra time to read the short story and complete the activity. Appendix of Materials: Materials used for mini lesson can be found below
