Introducing You to Your Soccer Teams
After a lapse of news coverage in past seasons, Crowns soccer teams are ready for their press-time. The Storm womens soccer team is coached by Jamison Ross, head coach for going on three years. Ive been coaching for almost 12 years, he explained, and Ive been at Crown for 3 of those years. I love my job here, these girls work and play hard. Our womens team sports 36 ladies on the roster, headed by three captains: Samantha Samsa, Erin Ebbers, and Mary Voss. In 2012, we had 5 girls graduate on the team, and Coach Ross hopes to grow that number. As number 11, Samsa is returning this season as a 2nd year captain from Cambridge, MN. Ross explained that shes a strong player with dedication and insight. For one of our first year captains, we have Ebbers from Worthington, MN. Shes a junior this year. Also a first year captain is Mary Voss, a senior from Upland, Ind. Ross told us that both the first year captains are great players and have earned their positions. Were [as a team] lucky to have our captains and thankful for them, he explained. The ladies have scheduled 19 games this semester. Eight of those games are are at home on Crowns field, the rest requiring the team to take their game away from home. Coach Ross admitted that St. Scholastica is by far the toughest competition for our girls. Crown played them on September 20, losing 0-5. We play our best and give it everything we have, Ross said, It fuels us to play harder. For the girls to play they have to put in hours for practice. Were really comfortable with our defending, Ross stated, and were striving on our attacking. Theyre getting better and better as we practice. The goal for the ladies team is to make it to conference playoffs, which requires being one of the top four teams with the most points of the season. The mens division is coached by Interim Nathan Budish, a graduate of Crown and its soccer team. Its his 9th year in the program. Hes never left, and has coached for 5 years for The Storm. I love the program, he said, thats why I havent left! He stated that hes honored to be Interiming for a team he had the privilege to play for as a student. The mens division is captained by Tyson Simon and Daniel Arellano. Budish told StormChaser, [the team] has a lot of international players this time around. Theyre all great guys no matter where theyre from.
Arellano is a junior this year. He hails from Ecuador, and Budish told us that hes extremely talented at the game and theyre lucky to have him. Simon is senior who will graduate from the program and is from Wyoming. Hes a strong player and adds life to the team according to Budish. As for toughest competition, St. Scholastica again holds the title. The Storm is scheduled to play them twice this year, having one game accomplished. Crown lost the game. 14-1. Its was a bummer, Budish commented, but were tough. We just need to bounce back and work harder. Theyve been striving to work on defending, specially air-balls. The team is physically small [numerically]. We have to work double-time to make up for that. But our international players bring a different kind of game to the team that you dont find in the U.S. often, Budish stated, but overall the guys are working hard. Were proud of everyone.. Budish went on to say that the team is very creative overall, determined, and are great at possessing the ball. Both the teams appreciate home support. They ask that Crown students show their support by coming to as many games possible, and they thank the entire student, faculty, and staff body for their prayers and support. It seems the Storm[s] are brewing on the horizon, ready for a great season to show their stuff and make us on the homefront proud.
