Tammuz: Jewish Month & Traditions

Tammuz is the tenth month of the Hebrew calendar, usually falling in June-July. It is named after the Babylonian god Tammuz. Important events in Jewish history that occurred in Tammuz include the breaching of Jerusalem's walls by Nebuchadnezzar's armies in 586 BCE and again by the Romans in 70 CE, which led to fasting on the 17th of Tammuz. Other notable dates in Tammuz include the death of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai on the first of Tammuz and various other rabbis on later dates in the month. Tammuz is also the name for July in the Arabic calendar.
