ABC Stationery Scholastic Teaching Resources
Introduction
elcome to ABC Stationerya great way to motivate children to write and help them learn their ABCs! Each lined sheet of reproducible stationery features a large, appealing illustration of an object or creature that begins with the featured letter. Youll find an alligator, boot, castle, dinosaur, and many more. The illustration provides a frame for students writing and gives them an image to link to the letter sound. Below each image is a short word bank to provide additional examples of words that begin with that letter and spark ideas for a variety of writing assignments. Emergent writers might expand the word bank and draw a small illustration for each word. More advanced writers might write short stories, poems, letters, or even tongue twisters! Additional ideas for using the stationery sheets in learning-rich activities appear in the next section.

How to Use This Book
The 26 stationery sheets in this book help reinforce students letterrecognition skills while building on their growing understanding of letter sounds and the function of print. These pages are designed for flexible use. In addition to their primary function as stationery, they can also be used in many different lessons, games, and activities. Suggestions are provided below, but you and your students are bound to develop your own unique ways to put ABC Stationery to use in your classroom.

Getting Started
Choose which letter you would like to start with and make copies of the stationery sheet that features that letter. Before distributing the sheets, introduce children to the format with a mini-lesson such as the one that follows for the letter b. 1. Gather children around you. Write Bb on the chalkboard or on chart paper and ask if someone can name the letter. Then ask if anyone can make the sound this letter stands for. Invite students to look around the room for the letter or for objects that begin with the letter. 2. List any student names beginning with this letter and ask if anyone recognizes the names. If none of your students names begins with b, list a few simple words instead, such as ball, bat, and bike. You might also show cards with illustrations of these things and the

word for each printed below. Say each name or word emphasizing the initial /b/ sound. Have a volunteer point out which letter stands for the /b/ sound. 3. Enlarge a sheet of stationery and display it. You might cover up the word bank for this step. Have the class brainstorm a list of words that begin with b as you record the words on the lines. 4. Give each child a copy of the stationery sheet for b. Challenge students to record their favorite words that begin with b. They can choose words from the class-generated list or choose other words. Have students draw a small illustration for some or all of the words. 5. Ask children to work with a partner and make up sentences about the words on their list. Challenge them to include as many words as they can in a single sentence. Encourage children to be imaginative and even a little silly as they incorporate the words on the list into a few sentences. 6. When children are ready for more of a challenge, have them write sentences on their stationery sheet that include words with the featured sound. You might also have them write letters, poems, riddles, tongue twisters, or descriptions inspired by the illustration on the sheet.
Sound Collages
After students complete a sheet of ABC stationery, distribute blank sheets of paper, scissors, glue sticks, and a selection of old magazines. Have children search for images whose names begin with the letter they have just reviewed on the stationery sheet. Instruct children to select five to ten images, cut them out, and glue them onto the blank paper to create a collage to accompany each stationery sheet. Display the collages in the classroom or have students add them to their personal dictionaries.
Silly Simon Says
Incorporate movement into the learning process with this simple game. After all, brain research shows that connecting movement and learning helps learners store information in the brain. Think of some silly movements that are related to a soundfor example, you might pat your belly to represent /b/ and give yourself a hug to represent /h/. Then create a word list that includes many words that begin with b and h and some that do not begin with either. Teach the movements to children and then read the list slowly. As you read aloud each word, students should listen for the initial sound. If the word starts with /b/ or /h/, they should make the appropriate motion. As they learn more letters, add these to the list and teach additional movements for each. This game will lead to some laughter and fun, and it also leads to more careful listening skills.
ABC References
Have children compile their completed word lists (step 4 above) in a binder in alphabetical order to form a personal dictionary. Encourage children to refer to their dictionaries as they are working on other writing assignments. Or you might post enlarged stationery sheets along with a pen in a spot that students can reach so that they can add to a class word list. Set aside time for students to add these words to their individual lists. Word Bank backpack black
Match It
Photocopy each stationery sheet, then cover or cut off the letter and word bank. Write the letters az on index cards, one letter per card. Show students how to play this variation of concentration for 24 players. Shuffle the rack snack tack track illustrations and place them facedown in rows

(you might have students play with selected letters and their corresponding stationery sheets instead of the entire alphabet). Shuffle the letter cards and deal an even number of cards to each player. Players take turns flipping over a picture and seeing if it begins with one of the letters in their hand. If they find a match, they keep the picture. If not, they return the picture facedown to its original location on the table. This game reinforces the connection between sound and letter and sharpens memory skills.
Alphabet Frieze
Use the stationery to create an alphabet frieze that can be displayed or used in various activities. First, photocopy each stationery sheet. Then write the appropriate upper- and lowercase letter in the center of each image, making them large and colorful. You might let students embellish these by coloring with crayons, markers, colored pencils, and so on, making sure not to cover the letter. For greater durability, laminate each sheet. These alphabet cards can be added to a display, preferably at childrens eye level. You can also use these colorful sheets in various games and activities, such as Sound Circle described below.
Thematic Stationery
Before you begin using the stationery, look through the illustrations to get ideas for additional ways to use the sheets. You may choose to present the sheets in alphabetical order, or in the order you teach the letters to children. Another fun approach is to group the stationery sheets thematically. Look through the illustrations to find images that might tie into a season or a unit of study. Here are some examples: Winter: igloo, mitten, penguin Oceans: fish, octopus, penguin, seal Fairy Tales: castle, queen, wizard
Sound Circle
For this activity, you will need a set of alphabet cards (see Alphabet Frieze, above) as well as a soft foam ball, and a large open space. Select enough stationery sheets so that each child has one and place these sheets in a large circle on the floor. Ask children to select a letter and stand or sit behind it. Toss the ball to a student. Explain that this student should say the sound represented by the letter in front of him or her. For a greater challenge, have students say one or more words that begin with this letter. Once a player completes a turn, the player tosses the ball to someone who has not yet had a turn. Variation: For this game, the number of cards should be one less than the number of students. Play lively music and have children move around the circle until the music stops. Students move quickly to a letter card and then go around the circle identifying either the sound represented by the letter or a word that begins with the letter. One student will not have a match and should sit in the alphabet soup in the center. Remove a card, add it to the soup, and continue to play until all but one student are in the soup.
Zany Zoo
Make copies of all the stationery sheets featuring animals (including z for zoo) and make a zany zoo for your classroom! Let students experiment with storytelling and word play as they write descriptive tongue twisters about each animal. Read aloud the word banks and brainstorm additional words that begin with the appropriate letters so that students can create longer descriptive phrases. Be sure to include verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns. Students might come up with a tongue twister such as Peppy penguins paint pink and purple pajamas at the party!
