Space and It'S Relation With Attitude of Person: Devry University Dhruvinkumar Patel
What is space? Place where people live. Some call it as home and some call it house and even call it as the personal gap between two people. Everyone have different opinion regarding space they are living in. The space (home) helps to build the social and cultural relation towards the society or other people which live in neighbor. Space also gives different people different attitude towards life and society. In case of Danticat space gave attitude of alertness and safety towards society. In case of Oates it gave the attitude of security and caring. In life of Ortiz it gave totally different attitude towards life. Space, the place where people live gives different attitude towards life. Danticats life in Westbury Court her life was within her family members. She did not know anything an about her society or the people lived there. Knowing what is in the society would help everyone to be safe and happy. Being aware is the greatest thing to achieve in life; this thing saves from anything from natural disaster to artificial destruction which could destroy the community. Knowing what is in the community and around the house will lead the development of persons attitude. Living in good community will enhance the good behavior and will lead to person of good character; sometime living in good community will never lead to good character. The reason is either the persons mind is filled with negativity by friends or either family member are setting bad example. There she lived for quite some time; she had no idea about her neighbor and anything about people around her. The day when the fire broke out in building she became aware of her neighbor and her family. Later she found people around her suffered the problems such as murder and robbery. They also got in problem when somebody stole her fathers camera. Having faced this kind of situation in her life, she became aware about her area and the people living around her. After that she always tries to understand the people and neighbor. Culture of Westbury Court is not properly mentioned in the essay. Class of people living the place is socially backward full of crime and illiteracy.
Oates life in Millersport was lonely, independent and filled with eagerness. She used to roam around the town walking in fields and woods and wandering the abandoned houses and barns. She had great obsession towards abandoned houses and barns. She had idea of her community in which she was living, the people around her. The house which she used to call the Weidels house and the family which lived in she knew them too. She was fully aware of things going in it. Her father knew the Weidel family very well and when he was talking about Mr. Weidel, he referred him as wife and child abuser. Mr. Weidel was a railway worker, a hunter who owned shotgun and rifles with elder sons. Mr. Weidel used to drink alcohol and used to beat his wife and children. Everyone in neighbor knew the story of Weidels and they were not trying to engage in their family matters including Oates. The night of fire which she can never forget, she remember as if it was festive affair to which she was invited. There were siren of fire department and shouts of people around Weidel house. Her father got ready in hurry for help keeping her and her mother in house for safety. Mr. Weidel went fleeing during fire but he was caught near Buffalo and his family also moved to different place. After this incident she became aware of new situation which was worse than previous once when she heard Mr. Weidel used to beat his children. She became more careful instead of independent but the curiosity part was still there in her mind. Her independent attitude towards life changed to caring and nosy. The social class of people and their culture is briefly mentioned in essay. The people of her town must be farmers because she mentioned about barns and fields in her essay. The social life of people was briefly mentioned because she was saying about the festivals they used to celebrate together.
The life of Ortizs life in Puerto Rico was for three years only, because of her family growing her father went to New York for job. There he found job in navy yard serving for his country, and its home base was in Brooklyn yard. Her father and uncle found new apartment in Paterson NJ. As child she did not recognize the colors she only memorize the only color she saw on building the gray color. The life of Ortiz in Puerto Rico the family, used to live in her mothers extended house. The people who lived there in building were nosy and always curious to know about neighbor above and below. When they came to USA their life changed her father gave strict order to her mother to lock the doors always. First they feel confused about the decision made by her father to close the door all the time. After some years she came to know the real situations prevailing in society. The landlords of town were opposing the influx of Latinos in neighbor where Jewish lived for generations. One man even showed the discrimination regarding their race and color telling him You Cuban? her father answered Im Puerto Rican. On that landlord commented Same shit And closed the doors. Her father was desperate to take his family out of that society. The house in Paterson was totally different from Puerto Rico. Because the apartment had the pipes of heater broken and rattled. But her mother liked the place because there were people from Puerto Rico around them. Her mother felt surrounded by their language, people and red kidney beans and rice. Ortizs father always tells them to buy the grocery at supermarket but her mother likes to buy things at small bodega named la Bodega. During December her father took them to downtown in departmental store for shopping of new clothes and toys. The rest of people in EL Building were shopping in places owned by Puerto Ricans and Jewish.
Her social life was really good because on every occasion her family used to get together for celebration. Her uncle and their children used to visit them for Christmas and Thanksgiving for family dinner. And their mothers brother bought new camera so they were excited to celebrate festivals. The roles of family members in family men used to go for work and female lived in house and doing cooking, cleaning house and taking care of kids. She lived in United States from childhood to adulthood; her attitude began to grow as an American. She did not want to get married to somebody and be house wife; she wants to be assistance to lawyer. Attitude changes as people grow from child to adult. This also depends on space people lives in or they already lived before. As we can see the attitudes of Ortiz changed as she grows in American society comparing Puerto Rico. Comparing Oates and Danticats care free attitude changed when they saw fire and dead people.
