TREASURE TROVE: THE NORTHERN GREAT PLAIN REGION CULTURE AND HERITAGE
Wandering in the Past
The region is rich in historical heritage. These pages are intended to introduce the cultural heritage of the region and also to encourage the reader to visit the northern region of the Great Hungarian Plain and its wide variety of architectural and cultural sights. The Thermal Bath of Sst, situated right by the city of Nyregyhza, is famous for its peculiar atmosphere that inspired Gyula Krdy, the popular writer between the two world wars, as well as Lujza Blaha, the celebrated actress of the 19th century. Today people may revisit the past in the Museum Village of Sst, the only open-air ethnographical museum of the region. Visitors should stop by even for a short hour the romantic fortresses, the castles surrounded by massive walls, and the spiritual centres: the churches of the region. Most of these churches are the masterpieces of the cultic and artistic traditions of architecture, regardless of their size or importance: it is equally a breath-taking experience to look up at the coffered ceiling covering the mud-and-doub walls of the Calvinist church of Tkos, or to pay homage to the memorabilia of the Hungarian Revolution (1848-49) in the grand Calvinist Church of Debrecen. The past is also present in memorial sights of famous literary persons, in ethnographical curiosities or in the heritage of folk architecture. The regions of Tiszaht, Erdht, Nagykunsg and Jszsg offer their visitors peace and slow time. Without the past our future becomes obscure, therefore we need to stop and look around before we move on.
Main Square, Grand Calvinist Church Debrecen
functions as the pasture for traditional Hungarian species of domestic animals, such as cattle, pig and sheep. If we are ready to go close the puszta reveals its hidden treasures: we may witness tens of thousands of cranes, wild geese, and mallards moving across the plain during their migration in spring and autumn. Groups of white stork regularly patrol the sky while you need to be lucky to meet black storks and spoonbills. Hortobgy is also the home of the characters of an old pastoral world: cattlemen, shepherds and horsemen and their loyal helpers the puli and the komondor, a small and a big species of longhaired sheepdogs of a Hungarian breed. Other characteristic elements of the scenery are grazing herds, sweep-pole wells, horsemen riding in baggy trousers, the famous stonebridge that is built over nine spans it is named after the nine holes and with its 167 metres, it is the longest vehicular stone bridge in Hungary , and the Hortobgy Csrda, the famous country tavern. On hot summer days we may witness the delusion of fata morgana, an unusual natural phenomenon. In spite of the vast pastures the entire area is not covered by the alkaline soil of the puszta, there is also an extensive system of fish-ponds here, and nearly forty percent of the national park is covered by a boggy, swampy, wetland area. The National Park offers exhibition houses and educational paths to introduce the flora and fauna of the area. What appears first as an inanimate, burnt out, saline area is the home of thousands of birds. There are two hundred couples of spoonbill hatching in the highly preserved area. Horse breeding and equestrian sports are also characteristic activities in the area that was compared to a vast open sea by Sndor Petfi, the revolutionary poet in the 19th century. Hortobgy-Mta is the largest equestrian centre of the region, but there are also other horse farms open for visitors. If not on horseback, the best way to approach the treasures of the pristine environment is to take a trip on a horse carriage.

Graceful Churches, Fabulous Castles and Fortresses
Like beacons in ancient times, church towers guide travellers by piercing the vast horizon and by the sound of their bells. Churches have always been shelters for the community, even if their significance changed throughout history. The Gothic church in Klcse is a masterpiece of rural church architecture, while the one in Vmosatya bears witness to various styles and ages. The bell-tower in Lnya is considered as an architectural curiosity since it was built without nails. The medieval frescoes in the seven hundred year-old Calvinist church in Csaroda depict the historical events of the past centuries. The church in Csengersima, built in the age of the Arpads (897-1301), is the oldest church along the river Szamos. The Gothic church from the 14th century in Csenger with its bricks burnt red and black is an aesthetic curiosity. The most important sight in Sonkd is a Gothic Calvinist church from the 15th century that received the Europa Nostra Prize in 1998. The 35 metres tall wooden bell-tower of the Calvinist church in Zsurk is a unique sight in the area. The Calvinist church in Tkos with its mud-and-doub walls and lively coffered ceiling was built in 1766. The late Gothic church in Nyrbtor, that also serves as a concert hall, was built by Istvn Bthori, prince of Transylvania, and it is famous for its lacy net vault that seems to levitate twenty metres high. The Greek Catholic basilica in Mriapcs is an internationally renowned place of pilgrimage that became famous for its weeping image of the Virgin Mary. The Israelite cemetery in Nagykll is often visited by pilgrims from all over the world for the tomb of Taub Eizik Izsk, a scholar of the Talmud, that was considered as a rabbi of miraculous powers. The symbol of Debrecen, a city often mentioned as the Calvinist Rome, is the largest Calvinist building in Hungary: the classicist Grand Church with its impressive harmony in architecture. The church was made famous by its role in history: this is where Lajos Kossuth, the leader of the Hungarian Revolution announced the Declaration of Independence (from the Habsburg throne) on 14. April 1849. It is also worth visiting the Csonka (Broken) church that was built in 1600. It was named after its bastioned roof of tower it received after a fire and a wind-storm instead of the original onion cupola. The Calvinist church in Hajdszoboszl, the biggest city of spas, was built on foundations from the 15th century, and its castle wall is the most important historical monument of the city. The Roman Catholic church on Bocskai Street is famous for its frescoes depicting the history of the town and its spas. As an Archbishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyla visited the town, a man who became known around the world as John Paul II. The Greek Catholic community, that consist of a few hundred people, has built a new church in Byzantine style on Szilfkalja Street just recently. Nyracsd had been inhabited before the Hungarian Conquest (at the end of the 9th century), but its first written record dates back to 1338, and the late Roman, early Gothic church in the centre was built in the 13th century. The interior of the church is decorated by three layers of frescoes from the 14th, the 15th and

the 17th centuries. This church is the only one from the age of the Arpads in Hajd-Bihar County that still functions. The pulpit is 300 years old. The Farkas line of the Gutkeledek family divided the ancient family heritage into two in 1289 and on one of the territories (in Bels Gt) a Roman church was built in the age of the Arpads, the ruins of which are displayed for visitors. The church ruins are well preserved and their pleasant environment makes them a popular target of excursions. The Calvinist church on Bocskay Square in Hajdbszrmny is famous for one of the biggest bastioned organs of Hungary, that is not only an amazing piece of art but its sound is also immaculate. Hajddorog is famous for being the centre of the only Greek Catholic diocese in Hungary. The church was adopted as a Cathedral by Pius X in 1912. The Calvinist church in Hajdnns was first built 800 years ago and underwent a series of reconstruction until it received its final shape in 1868, when the famous coffered ceiling and the impressive organ were placed in the church. The organ was designed by the famous teacher of music, Lajos Maklry.

The Roman Catholic church of the town was built in 1895 during the Millennium (celebrating the thousand year-old history of the State of Hungary). The oldest church in Jsz-Nagykun-Szolnok County can be found in Jnoshalma, and it is considered as a historical monument since its architecture contains Roman elements that were preserved during the series of reconstruction. The beautiful church in Jszszentandrs is decorated by frescoes of religious and historical themes painted by Ferenc Chiovini and Vilmos Aba-Novk. It hosts the famous Porciunkulai Bcs, a parish-feast organised every year on the first weekend of August. The two-steepled Roman Catholic church in Jszapti is a medieval historical monument. The secco of the cupola was painted by Pl Vg, the famous painter of the town, while the side-altars were made by Mr Than. The Castle Church in Szolnok has an extraordinary history. The church was built in the 1820s by using the stones from the ruins of a Turkish mosque and a medieval church. The main entrance of the Calvinist church built in Classicist style is decorated by mighty Ionic pillars and a tympanum, the sanctuary of the Roman Catholic church contains the copy of the world famous religious painting in Czestochowa.

The castles and fortresses of the northern region of the Great Hungarian Plane witnessed long-forgotten romantic love stories and the life of princes and princesses. The most intact earthwork in Middle-Europe can be found in Szabolcs, by the river Tisza. The triangular earthwork was the scene of the national assembly in the age of the Arpads. The earthwork was built by Szabolcs who was probably the prince after the death of Prince Arpad. The castle of Kisvrda is a rare example of profane medieval architecture. It was built by Istvn Vradi, the Bishop of Kalocsa, in a period after 1465. The castle of Kisvrda hosted the last inspection of the troops by Ferenc Rkczi II, leader of the Revolution (1703-11), who also held negotiations in the Renaissance fortified castle of Vaja, a historical monument surrounded by a natural park from the 16th century. The Vay castle in Vaja has survived the past centuries in relatively good condition. Walking in the park of the Andrssy Castle in Tiszadob is like walking around the castles of the Loire Valley in France. The building started to be built by Gyula Andrssy, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in 1880 on the basis of the architecture of French castles, and it is surrounded by a landscape garden. The castle hosts the annual Eastern Piano Festival. The Lnyay Castle in Tuzsr is considered as a rare historical monument. It was rebuilt according to the plans of the famous architect, Mikls Ybl around 1880. The Dessewffy castle can be found in Tiszavasvri, and it was built around 1820 together with the surrounding protected landscape garden. It is also worth visiting the Herplyi church ruins not far from Berettyjfalu. Other than the southern steeple, nothing remained of this 12th century monastery, but due to the work of archaeologists, visitors can also see the foundations of the building. The Rhdey Castle in Zska hosts the exhibitions of the famous painter, Gyula Madarsz and the participants of the International Artists and Icon Painters Colony, but visitors may also enter the Rhdey-Wesselnyi-Bethlen room, furnished with period furniture.
The Bocskai Castle, the former manor of the Prince of Transylvania, can be found in Nagykereki, and it displays a collection of arms from the 16th century and an exhibition focusing on the history of the 17th century wars of liberation. The only sign of the castle of Szolnok, that was an important strategic sight during the Turkish occupation, is the Artist Colony built on its place. Two of the most important castles of the Almsy family are the castle in Szenttams and another one in Ktp. The latter was built by Count Almsy for his daughter as part of her dowry, and it is rebuilt and functions as a castle hotel today. Kenderes is famous for its Neo-Baroque Horthy Castle, that is surrounded by a beautiful garden.

Traditional Handcraftsmanship
The representatives of traditional professions and handcraftsmanship wood carvers, weavers, embroiderers, potters inherited their skills from a long sequence of generations. The variety in style and patterns that characterises these elements of folk art has accumulated throughout he past centuries. There are still masters of old professions in most of the villages, who are ready to teach about their craft in workshops or in courses. The products of traditional handcraftsmanship may become parts of our lives if we are willing to recognise the merits of an intensive coexistence between man and nature. One of the centres of folk pottery is Meztr where pottery has been made since the 16th century based on the excellent raw material found in the area. The products of this region jugs, dishes, plates, crocks, and flasks are easily recognised by their colours: red, green and white patterns on an ochre background. The Pottery Museum in Meztr displays the history of local pottery until today in a permanent exhibition. The life and work of Balzs Badr Sr. and his family is displayed by the Memorial House. The Hajdsg region is famous for the black ceramics of Ndudvar as well as the white and felted embroidery made in the area. Felted embroidery is also made in the region of Debrecen and Derecske. The traditional skills of handcraftsmanship are practised in pottery workshops by renowned folk artists. Among these traditions the most prominent in Trkeve is the skill of making Cumanian embroidery. Pillowcases were made of woollen yarn and felt for a long time, but today household

textile is made by the technique of Cumanian embroidery in Kisjszlls. The Folk Art Workshop can be found in Tiszavrkony, not far from the city of Szolnok, and it is supported by a folk art society. There is a folk art shop in the institution where visitors can buy various masterpieces of folk art. These art works of high level are popular gifts among Hungarians while visitors from other countries take them outside the borders and thus advertise the wonderful traditions of this region. The traditions of making gingerbread are still alive in Debrecen and in
Hajdbszrmny. The master of gingerbread making in Hajdbszrmny is a member of the fourth generation of a dynasty of gingerbread making. The wooden gingerbread forms are inherited from generation to generation, including forms shaping a new-born baby, a hussar, a richly ornamented sword or a heart among a number of other shapes. The workshop is equipped by traditional instruments and both coloured and brown gingerbread can be made here. Hajdnns and Trkszentmikls are famous for the traditions of plaiting of straw. The Exhibition House (country exhibition house) in Hajdnns displays objects of traditional folk culture. The house, built in folk classicist style was furnished by objects gathered from the city, and it was adopted as a memorial house in 1980, and has been open for visitors since 1984. It is a typical house of the region: it is covered with reeds, divided into three main parts, and there is a long veranda along the front of the house. The adobe walls are painted white and they are black at he bottom. The tricks of plaiting of straw can be learnt about in the Aranyszalma (Golden Straw) Workshop. There is also a Straw Gallery in the Community Centre of Trkszentmikls where the products of the summer camps are displayed. The Mihalk family in Balmazjvros makes traditional hats and caps that used to be and are still worn by herdsmen of all kinds. The traditional culture of herdsmen in the Great Hungarian Plain and in Hortobgy is best represented by wood carvings, and objects made of horn or leather, like the kariks, a short-stocked ornamental long whip and jack-knife holders. Wood carvers made the basic furniture of rural houses. These objects were richly ornamented by patterns of leafy twigs, roses and tulips. Handmade and carved folk furniture is still often used in households in the regions of Nagykunsg and Jszsg. There are still a few active handicraftsmen in Jszszentandrs who make folk furniture. The characteristic embroidery of the Jszsg region originates from fur embroidery, that was famous for its wonderful ornaments. Furriers used the long fur of the traditional Hungarian species of sheep to make the suba (shepherds cloak) and the kdmn (a sheepskin waistcoat) that were embroidered by coloured yarns. A shepherds cloak for a grown man consist of 14-16 sheepskins. Today we may recognise these patterns on household textiles and clothes. Rtkz is famous for its homespun, Bereg is noted for the herring-bone embroidery, women of Tarpa make the most beautiful tulip and carnation patterns, while Paszab is famous for the flowers and fish on its embroidery. In Beregdarc visitors can gain insight into hemp processing. The most well-known styles of embroidery in the Bihar region are the white embroidery of Komdi and the unique ornamentation of embroidery in Furta. Plaiting is also an important part of the traditional handcraftsmanship in the region. Besides plaited rye-, oat-, and barely-straw, objects of everyday life were often made of wicker, rushes or straw. Later dry cornhusk also became a raw material of plaited bags and ornaments. People still make wicker baskets, straw bread-baskets and sewing baskets. Cornhusk is also used to make toys for children. Basketry and other wicker-work, such as wicker furniture are still popular in the regions surrounding the rivers Tisza, Zagyva, and Krs where wicker and rush can be found. Railings around tombs are the best examples of the blacksmithing works of the region, but visitors may also find ornamented gates, sign-boards, door- and window-lattice.

The region of Hajdsg also has a number of characteristic dishes: sparerib soup, Debrecen sausage with horseradish from Bihar, Hortobgyi Meat Pancake, Hajdsg stuffed cabbage, and dbbencs, a type of fried dough made in the oven. The Turkey Days in Debrecen introduces special dishes made of turkey.

People from Hajdbszrmny are characterised by their active relationship with their historical past that serves as a basis for their stable identity. Gastronomy is also a part of the traditions of this community, and that is why they annually organise the Chef of Hajdsg competition. The competitors have to make the characteristic dishes of the area. The Jszberny Summer Festivities offer programmes focusing on economy, sports, culture, and science. The traditional programmes include the Traditional Jszsg Wedding Feast together with the Festival of Folk Cuisine in Jszsg where traditional dishes are served with folk music and folk dance performances.

TREASURE TROVE: THE NORTHERN GREAT PLAIN REGION CULTURE AND HERITAGE
The cuisine of the northern region of the Great Hungarian Plain is characterised by a wide variety. Visitors can taste fresh milk, homemade sour cream and cottage cheese, eat the famous goulash, or try themselves in making plum jam. The region is also famous for its fish soup, fish stew, stuffed cabbage, noodle soup or potato pasta. The Szolnok Goulash Festival Society organises the annual international Szolnok Goulash Festival. The increasing popularity of the Honey Festival in Jszberny brought international fame for the town. The cake competition in Jsztelek is also popular among confectioners and skilful housewives. The Kuruc Society in Rkczifalva annually organises the National and International Bread Baking Competition. During the competition traditional harvest dishes are served and there is also a 17th century kitchen open for visitors. The river Tisza, its branches and fish ponds are popular among fishermen. Most of the villages along the rivers organise fish soup competitions, where visitors can not only taste the most delicious dishes but try themselves in making them. The first fish soup competition of the season is in May organised in Tristvndi, that is followed by another in June in Meztr by the lake, and in August in Tiszabercel. The northern region of the Great Hungarian Plane offers a series of excellent programmes and festivals focusing on the cuisine of the region. Visitors may chose from the list under the title Cultural and Gastronomical Programmes.
