INSTRUCTIONS for Preemie Hat
Note: Hats in picture are using different variations of switching yarn colors around. Instructions are for a hat worked in two colors with the bottom few rounds worked in a second color for a roll up brim. Using color A ch 4, join with slip st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc in this and all rounds), dc in ring, ch 1, *[2 dc in ring, ch 1] 5 times; join with a slip st in top of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 6 ch-1 sps) Round 2: Ch 3, Fpdc around next st, Fpdc around same dc that you did the Fpdc around, dc in ch-1 sp, *(dc in next st, Fpdc around next st, Fpdc around same dc that you did the Fpdc around, dc in ch-1 sp)* repeat from * to * around; join with slip st in top of beg ch-3. Round 8 thru 15: Finish off color A after Round 7, join color B with a slip st in any FPDC. Repeat round 6 and 7 four times. NOTE: FOR A LARGER TODDLER LIKE A 4 YEAR OLD, WORK FIVE REPEATS OF ROUNDS 6 THRU 7 INSTEAD OF 4 REPEATS. Toddler Final Round: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each st around; join with slip st to top of beg sc. Finish off. (60 sc) See pom-pom, flowers or bow pattern below OPTIONAL POM-POM Use a large pom-pom maker or cut a piece of cardboard about 4 square. Wrap Yarn around square about 100 to 125 times. Slip yarn off square and firmly tie a 12 piece of yarn around the middle. Leave the tie ends long to attach the pom-pom. Cut loops at each end and trim to a smooth ball. Turn hat right side out, thread yarn tail of pom-pom into the Yarn Needle and with Pom-Pom attached insert yarn needle through small opening at top of hat. Working inside of the hat on the wrong side, using the beginning yarn tail and the pom-pom yarn tail, tie together both sets of yarn tails together many times. Cut yarn tails very short or weave in all ends. OPTIONAL BOW: Round 1: Ch 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring or using a magic ring, ch 1, sc in ring, ch 5, 3 tr in ring, ch 5, 2 sc in ring, ch 5, 3 tr in ring, ch 5, sc in ring. Finish off leaving a long tail to attach the bow to your project. OPTIONAL FLOWER: By Cindy Pippins Round 1: Ch 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook to form a ring or using a magic ring, (Ch 4, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc in 4th ch from hook, sl st into ring), repeat 4 more times, to make 5 petals. Finish off leaving a long tail to attach the flower to your project. (Optional) Edging: Loosely crab stitch around edges of earflaps and hat, making two stitches in the point of each earflap. (The hat should still stretch to at least 14". If it doesn't try using a larger hook to crab stitch, replace with a row of scs, or just leave it off.) Finish off, weave in ends. Braided strings: Cut 12 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long. Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is about 4 in long (or desired length, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length. Repeat for second earflap.
Loopy Six-Petal Flower: Supplies: Small amounts worsted weight yarn, 2 colors. 5mm (H/8) hook Opt tapestry needle for sewing Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3. Inside ring, 11 dc. Pull ring tight, sl st in top ch of ch 3. Round 2: Ch 6, skip one dc, sl st in next dc. Repeat around, finishing in the base of the original ch 6. Round 3: Inside each ch-6 loop, 8 sc. (Don't sl st in between, just move on to the next sc.) Finish off with long tail for sewing. Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 1. Inside ring, 11 sc. Pull ring almost tight, sl st in first sc. Round 2: Ch 4, skip one sc, sl st in next sc. Repeat around, finishing in base of original ch 4. Round 3: Inside each ch-4 loop, 6 sc. (Don't sl st in between, just move on to the next sc.) Row 6: Ch 1, sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each sc across to within last 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 4 sc, sc on the side of previous rnd on end of brim, sc in each of next 2 dc of hat, (remove marker),turn. Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across brim, sc on the side of previous rnd on end of brim, sc in next dc of hat (remove marker),cont. sc in each st around entire hat to other side of brim, join yarn to side of brim. Fasten off, weave in loose ends with tapestry needle.

Pattern Notes: Pattern is worked through both loops. Newborn: This hat should fit babies whose heads measure between 13 and 15 inches. Directions for Hat: Ch 2. Round 1: 12 HDC in second chain from hook. Facial Features (Leave long tails for sewing on): Eyes (Make 2). Use an H hook. Ch 3. Round 1: 9 DC into the third ch from hook. Sl st in the first double crochet (not the chain 2). Round 2: Ch 1, HDC in the same stitch. 2 HDC in each stitch around. I work in one extra HDC so I can sl st in the first HDC rather than in the ch. Round 3: Ch 1, HDC in the same stitch *1 HDC in the next stitch, 2 HDC in the next* around. Fasten off and weave ends. Sew a button in the center. Beak: Ch 6. Row 1: 1 sc in second ch from hook, HDC in next, DC in next, DC in next, TC in next. Fasten off. Ears: Ch 2. Round 1: Work 5 SC in the second ch from hook. (5) Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch. I would recommend this size for 4-6 months. Had to stretch it a little bit to get it to fit on my styrofoam mannequin head. Stitches: ~ hdc- half double crochet: Yarn over, draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull the yarn through all 3 loops. ~hdc2tog- half double crochet 2 together (don't know if mine is technically correct): Yarn over, draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook), pull through the next chain (4 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull yarn through all 4 loops.
Hat With white, Ch. 54 and slst to first ch. Make sure you do not twist your ch. Rnds 1- 19 or 20: Ch 2. In the same ch. hdc. Hdc to finish, slst to the first hdc (NOT THE CHAIN). [Until you reach the height that you feel looks best] FO With right side facing out still, SC one end shut (preferably the end with rnd 1). FO Earflaps ~Make sure the seam is in the back. ~There will be 17 st in between each earflap on each side. Row 1: With white, hdc in 10 st. Ch. 1 turn. Row 2: Hdc2tog, hdc in next 6 sts, hdc2tog. Ch. 1 turn. Row 3: 8 Hdc, ch. 1 turn. Row 4: Hdc2tog, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog. Ch. 1 turn. Row 5: Hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog. Ch. 1 turn. Row 6: Hdc2tog twice. Ch. 1 turn. Cut 12 strips of pink and white at desired length. They will be folded in half so remember to cut it twice as long. Take a single pink and single white cut of yarn and loop it through. Do this twice in each stitch. Braid together. Bow My bow is difficult to explain. I am sure there are way better patterns out there for bows than the one I made. With seam facing you, I did a line of single crochets to make the ears more distinct when worn. Connecting from 6 rnds down to the 10th stitch on top. Attach all accessories and embroider eyelashes.
