From Liberal to Libertarian: Bush, Obama and the Final Bubble
Introduction: Ideas and Change Americas once vibrant Republic has morphed into an imperial oligarchy. The regime has eaved a ne dogma preached !aith!ully by pundits and politicians o! both parties. As that dogma crumbles in the !ace an impending economic collapse, the vast ma"ority o! citi#ens ill be le!t in an ideological vacuum. $alin or Obama, Fo% or &'', The (rudge Report or The )u!!ington $ost* they simply a!!irm to their !ollo ers and vie ers di!!erent shades o! the same orldvie . From ithin this paradigm its impossible to grasp the enormous manipulation and dys!unction that besets the nation. +n the past there as su!!icient diversity o! ideas ithin the mainstream to o!!er ade, uate solutions !or the challenges o! the time. This is no longer the case. A Liberal Democrat Born in the late -./0s, &old 1ar mythology as very. The 2oviets ere bad, the 1est as good yet the echoes o! 3ietnam le!t a crac4 in the armor o! the 5noble 6nited 2tates. The Le!t as !or civil rights, or4ers rights and sympathi#ed ith the plight o! the poor. + atched &apras Its a Wonderful Life and as sure 7eorge Bailey as a (emocrat and )arry $otter as a Republican. Toss in a strong dose o! +rish &atholicism and you get the picture. 8ennedy as good, 'i%on as bad. But many thought other ise, and sa the (emocrats as the architects o! big political machines and po er!ul unions bent on ta%ing, controlling and stealing !rom hard or4ing people. For them, the Republican $arty represented !iscal responsibility, religious values and the ar on &ommunism. The Reagan years ere !or the !iscally conservative, anti9communist Republicans a renaissance. A bi#arre, sentimental "ourney through the present. 2trangely enough, :r. Reagan began to spend li4e no other peace time president in history hile at the same time cutting ta%es. 'eedless to say, the country gre and prospered and the biggest bull mar4et in history began. The credit bubble began in earnest. Buy and hold as the mantra. 1all 2treet ent ild, and the men !rom 'e ;or4 ith slic4ed bac4 hair became the 5roc4 stars o! the <0s. This !it per!ectly into my orld vie * evil ban4ers and Republicans together stampeding over the 5great civili#ation !ounded by F(R and his cro n prince 8ennedy. Little did + 4no that hourly ages had been !alling in the 62 since the early -.=0s and + had the honor o! being part o! the !irst generation in American history that ould earn less than their !athers. Almost in the blin4 o! an eye, the Berlin 1all came do n, the &old 1ar as over, and 71) as invading 8u ait and de!initively reestablishing American hegemony in the orld. ?apan, a!ter threatening to overta4e the 62 economically, began its long !ade into de!lation. Bill &linton made his entrance, seemingly too young and impetuous to become a good $resident and surrounded by very bright and dogmatic !ol4s !rom the Le!t. The aves o! change that had begun be!ore he arrived carried his administration !or ard into hat !or my generation ill surely be its ape%. Technology, innovation, money, gro th and an angry, dogmatic right
apparently "ealous o! his good !ortune and attac4ing him in an unprecedented ay. All o! this simply con!irmed my orld vie . 'e t 7ingrich and the evil Republicans against Bill and the good (emocrats. But something ir4ed me. The &lintonites imposed their o n brand o! 5politically correct dogma. + tried to brush it aside, but the bad taste lingered. The supposedly !iscally irresponsible (emocrats even balanced the budget, Times cover ith Rubin, 7reenspan and 2ummers as our saviors. Lo in!lation and unemployment, steady gro th, and a stoc4 mar4et that seemed to never stop. 2ilicon 3alley replaced 1all 2treet as the :ecca !or brains and innovation. An Agenda
The 6nited 2tates has become a cleptocracy parading itsel! as an oligarchy. But there is one thing the American people have up their sleeves, a birthright. 1hile !ar !rom per!ect, and ith obvious mista4es especially regarding slavery, omen and indigenous peoples, the Founding Fathers lived a moment o! uni,ue political enlightenment. They understood ith rare clarity the danger that government posed, and created a Republic that let men live !reely and restrained government ith unprecedented vigor. The tree o! liberty they planted bore abundant !ruit, but the time has arrived to get out the sheers. The coming crisis, o! hich e have only !elt the !irst tremors, ill create an incredible opportunity !or Americans to completely re9vamp their lives, the lives o! their children, and possibly the !uture o! the orld by simply voting, en masse, !or the &onstitution that they thought they already had. The !ollo ing is a potential agenda !or a third party, radically &onstitutional, unabashedly American. Debt and the &ed The !irst reality that must be accepted is that the 6nited 2tates 7overnment and its citi#ens ill never be able to pay bac4 the enormous amount o! debt, public and private, that has been accumulated over the last E0 years. +t is simply impossible. The country is ban4rupt. Total 62 public debt, including un!unded liabilities, is over H/0 trillion. The Federal 7overnment has revenues in the HA.J trillion range, and it is running a debt o! about H- trillion. +n plain, American @nglish* this dog dont hunt. ;ou dont need a $)( !rom :+T to do the math. This o! course doesnt include private debt hich brings the total to close to H.0 trillion on a 7($ o! about H-D trillion. 'o shots are !ired, no one dies, and no one starves. All
cash, ban4 accounts, e,uity o nership and property rights are !ully respected, e start over. Only those holding 62 Treasury Bonds ill be paid a percentage o! !ace value on the debt they hold, probably in the E0M range, but that calculation does need a $)( hich + am un!ortunately lac4ing. 1ho ill get the big haircutC Foreign governments ho hold large sta4es in 62 paper, but in return they ill get a portion o! their money bac4 in 5real money, and a once again vibrant 62 economy. Caveats: Campaign Financing, the Environment, Education and Space
Cam+aign &inance ,e orm One o! the most insidious threats to our Republic has come !rom the in!luence o! big money on politicians. @normous amounts o! money are needed to compete, and as in sports ith per!ormance enhancing drugs, campaign contributions have arped our political system and turned elected o!!icials into the little more than messenger boys !or the mega rich. This is a thorny issue because it runs up against First Amendment rights, but nonetheless it needs to be addressed. 1hat happens on the 2tate and local level should obviously be decided on that
level. But !or all Federal elections, a completely ne system o! campaign !inance re!orm needs to be enacted. First, an o!!icial election period needs to be established, / months !or e%ample. At that point, an o!!icial list o! candidates must be created, and an online ballot held. The top ten candidates ould receive Federal Funds, and !rom that time on, that is all the money they ould be able to spend on their campaigns. A second cut o!! ould occur at E months, ith only J campaigns !unded, and the !inal cut o!! ould come at on month, ith only t o candidates. At each cuto!!, the eligible candidates ould receive ne !unding. This system ould be paid !or ith a ta% on advertising. A series o! debates ould be established and participation in these debates ould be mandatory in order to receive !unding. This system ould level the playing !ield a!ter the ten person cuto!!, beyond hich, the candidates ould be "udged not by ho much e%posure they have, but by the ,uality o! the e%posure. Advertisers 4no the importance o! reach and !re,uency, in e!!ect, this system ould give each !inalist the same !re,uency and reach, the inner ould then be "udged on the ,uality o! the content. This system could have &onstitutional implications that might re,uire an Amendment process, but considering the importance o! it, i! needed, it should be embar4ed upon. -nerg! and "a)es The ne Federal 7overnment ill probably be less than a third o! the si#e it is today. But there is one challenge !acing the orld that only a Federal government can tac4le, and that is the environment. )istory has sho n that human greed ill e%haust resources and contaminate the environment !ar beyond any point o! repair and certain constraints must be implemented to assure that e dont destroy our planet or e%haust necessary commodities. The Federal 7overnment ill create a ne @nergy Agency. The @nergy Agency ill have a t o!old purpose, !irst to investigate ne technologies and !und ith seed capital ne clean energy ventures. +t ill also create clean energy installations that ill directly !eed the grid. +t ill have a goal o! having the country run o!! -00M clean rene able energy. +t ill be !unded by a ta% on non9rene able energy sources, primarily oil, coal and natural gas. 1hile this ill s4e mar4et dynamics to a certain e%tent, these ta%es ill also put a 5realistic cost on !ossil !uels by ta4ing into account the contamination costs and depletion costs. The 5ne @$A ill have as its goal to convert unsustainable economic activity into sustainable ones. From agriculture and manu!acturing to retail, all practices must be studied !or their environmental impact, and those practices that are unsustainable must be ta%ed to create competitive advantages !or those !ollo ing a sustainable model. This o! course is a slippery slope, but it is a path e must endure i! e are to create a healthy long9term economic model. For e%ample, are there re9usable alternatives to plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic bagsC +! so, ta% the practices that contaminate so the cost o! the product re!lects its true cost, not "ust the cost o! production. )erman (aly has also ritten e%tensively on this topic. -ducation @ducation must be an entirely a 2tate and local endeavor. 'onetheless, as a nation and a Republic e have in interest in at least setting a standard !or ho !uture voting citi#ens are !ormed and educated. The proposed system ould be a national test !or all -< year olds that covered all the ma"or areas o! study: math, science, philosophy, history, economics, art, music,
political science, literature, languages, the environment etc. Ta4ing the test ould be completely voluntary, but the incentive ould be !ull university scholarships !or the top -0M o! participants. A commission ould be set up, an Academy so to spea4, o! cultural, political and business leaders to create the curriculum o! the test. )ope!ully this commission and the test itsel! ould create great national debates on the 4ey concepts e consider relevant as a Republic. This ould be !unded entirely ith a Federal Ta% on advertising. F2ee N..!or more on this topicG #A(A +ts logical that e continue to e%plore the 6niverse !rom a Federal level, as ell as in cooperation ith other nations. The e%ploration o! 2pace helped de!ine us as a nation, and it needs to be invigorated and supported so that it may continue to inspire Americans to see4 peace!ul adventure and e%ploration in the 6niverse. 1hile the military budget ill be cut probably by around t o thirds, a portion o! that should be re9directed to ard a peace!ul space program. Conclusion: ,adicals and the &ounding &athers :any ill read this and immediately e%claim that its radical, dangerous, or !ringe. +ts !ascinating hat people, a!ter years o! mass media indoctrination, !ind radical. Ta4e !or e%ample the issue o! the &ordoba )ouse in :anhattan. This a completely !abricated issue to drive an agenda. 1hat American ould ant to live in a country here you ould have to sho correct religious credentials be!ore you could buy land and build on itC On the other hand, here is the national debate on A+$A&, an organi#ation that has immense po er over our legislature and played a ma"or role in the buildup to the 1ar in +ra,C +ts !ascinating to see ho as the last combat troops leave +ra, e are not hotly debating hy and ho e got entangled in this ar, but discussing hether someone can build a cultural center F:uslim o! courseG in :anhattan. Another ne hot topic ill be hether to 4eep or let run out the Bush ta% cuts. Thats a4in to discussing hether to clip the nails o! someone rushed to the emergency room a!ter a ma"or car accident. They tell us, loo4 at the nails, not the bro4en limbs. An interesting thought e%periment is to imagine Thomas ?e!!erson, i! e could magically transport him to the current period and get him completely up to date on all the issues !acing the 'ation. 1hat e he have to say about our !oreign adventures, our media, The Fed, the national debt and our alphabet soup agenciesC Once people regain their senses they ill see that hat is radical and !ringe is our current political and economic situation. As a nation and a Republic e have completely lost north and the con!usion asnt brought on randomly. The time has arrived to begin calling things !or hat they are. 'o more double spea4. 1e must demand that our media and politicians address the problems o! the nation as a hole, not "ust the special interests o! a !e uber9rich manipulators. 1e :62T re9establish the Republic.
