How to use the Microsoft PowerPoint application.
Learning Area: science and geography. Strand/topic from the Australian Curriculum: Science- Earth and space sciences: Sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions can affect Earths surface. (ACSSU096). Geography- geographical knowledge and understanding: Impact of bushfires of floods on environments and communities, and how people can respond. (ACHGK030).

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Students will display competency in planning through the use of PowerPoint. Students will demonstrate an ability to cooperate and collaborate with others. Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk: A powerpoint to demonstrate the expectation for the final product of the students plan. Students are grouped in mixed ability groups. Book the computer lab- 1 computer per every three Students can present the information in any students. way they like. A list of groups- three students per group. Have personalised instructions prepared for the students who may need it.

Time 0mins Motivation and Introduction: 1. The teacher opens the lesson with a class discussion on what they have been doing in the past lessons on natural disasters. 2. Once the students have answered the question, the teacher than asks if they remember what the final task is to be. If students dont recall, the teacher can bring up a YouTube documentary of natural disasters to prompt them. 3. Once the students have correctly answered the question, the teacher then informs them that today, they plan their documentary. 5mins Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions): 4. The teacher then puts the students into groups of three- the groups are mixed ability groups- and instructs them to go sit with each other. 5. The teacher than instructs the students to discuss the natural disaster that they covered in their commercial and quiz in the previous lesson and decide which one they like best. 6. Once students have selected a natural disaster the teacher than calls for their attention and informs the students that the natural disaster they just selected will be the one the group will do their documentary on. 7. The teacher than informs students that in this lesson the students are to complete a plan for their documentary using Microsoft PowerPoint. The teacher explains that the students are to use each slide in the power point as a scene in the documentary. 8. The teacher informs the students that they must include a title page, a slide that identifies each group members role- editor, camera man and spokesman, the timing and what occurs when. The teacher also informs the students that the documentary must include at least one quiz question during their documentary. 9. The teacher than brings up a sample of how the PowerPoint may be set out, and highlights that the groups can present the plan in anyway e.g. written, or pictures with speech bubbles etc. 10. The teacher reminds the students that all the information they include in their documentary should include the information they used to produce their commercial and their quiz. 11. The teacher finally informs the students that the documentary should be a minimum of 3 minutes long. 12. Students are then instructed to go to a computer- one computer per Resources/References

While the students are planning their documentary, the teacher should observe how the students work as a group and take note of these observations. 50mins Lesson Closure. 13. The students are instructed to post their completed plan on each group members KidsBlog page, and entitle it will all their groups names. 14. The students are then to view another groups plan and post a comment on their PowerPoint. The comment should include one positive and suggestion that could help to improve the documentary. Transition: 15. Students return to their seats and take out their books for the next scheduled lesson. Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be judged?) Students will be assessed using the following checklist: Groups displayed competency in planning through the use of PowerPoint, and considered all aspects of the documentary that must be addressed (Objective 1). Students demonstrated an ability to cooperate and collaborate with others (Objective 2).
