We are one Sunday away from the most important week of the Liturgical Calendar, the HOLY WEEK. Next Sunday we begin the Holy Week, with the celebration of Palm Sunday. Our Readings this week-end focuses on the desire of God to make us realize that He exists, that He cares for us. He has proved to us both these, by resurrecting Lazarus from the Dead. Our First Reading from the prophet Ezekiel is an appeal from God for people to realize that through various miracles and wonders the Lord has revealed Himself to us. You shall know that I am the Lord- is the phrase used by the prophet to drive home to us Gods own desire to convince us of His Existence. Saint Paul takes it one step further. Gods Spirit dwells in us. Our hearts and minds are tuned to Gods presence and inspiration. We must allow the Spirit of God to guide us and direct us among all the worries, the concerns and pursuits that this world entices us to follow. By putting God first, everything will fall in place: Our joy and our satisfaction, our search for meaning and the reason for our existence in this life. So with these considerations let us allow ourselves to be once again re-awakened into believing in God and living a new life of love and service to HIM.

Stanislaus (10301079)

Anyone who reads the history of Eastern Europe cannot help but chance on the name of Stanislaus, the saintly but tragic bishop of Krakw, patron of Poland. He is remembered with Saints Thomas More (June 22) and Thomas Becket (December 29) for vigorous opposition to the evils of an unjust government. Born in Szczepanow near Krakw on July 26, 1030, he was ordained a priest after being educated in the cathedral schools of Gniezno, then capital of Poland, and at Paris. He was appointed preacher and archdeacon to the bishop of Krakw, where his eloquence and example brought about real conversion in many of his penitents, both clergy and laity. He became bishop of Krakw in 1072. During an expedition against the Grand Duchy of Kiev, Stanislaus became involved in the political situation of Poland. Known for his outspokenness, he aimed his attacks at the evils of the peasantry and the king, especially the unjust wars and immoral acts of King Boleslaus II. The king first excused himself, then made a show of
penance, then relapsed into his old ways. Stanislaus continued his open opposition in spite of charges of treason and threats of death, finally excommunicating the king. The latter, enraged, ordered soldiers to kill the bishop. When they refused, the king killed him with his own hands. COOMENT: John the Baptist, Thomas Becket, Thomas More and Stanislaus are a few of the prophets who dared to denounce corruption in high places. They follow in the footsteps of Jesus himself,

Mahalo in advance! THE EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE "The Examination of Conscience is one of the fundamental means of furthering personal sanctification. For Catholics, the most common use of examination of conscience is in the preparation for Confession. For all Christians, examination of conscience can be an effective means to greater holiness through fostering obedience to God and conformity to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. To that end, and through the application of an objective measurement of how well we conformed to the will of God, the examination of conscience helps us avoid the self-deception of thinking that our behavior, thoughts, and motives are not sinful when they actually are, as well as avoiding scrupulosity, which is seeing sin where there is none.

Why Do We Kneel in Church? IF WE ARE TO WORSHIP GOD not merely out of routine or habit, but with an intelligent love and a loving intelligence, we need to understand why we are doing what we do. For example, why do we kneel? What is so important, so meaningful, about this posture that we use it before and after Mass, during the Eucharistic prayer, and at other times of the Mass as well, includingas once was the universal custom and still is the universal normwhen we receive Holy Communion? The explanation below is from St. Thomas Aquinass Commentary on the Epistle to the Ephesians: Humility makes a prayer worthy of being heard: He hath had regard to the prayer of the humble: and he hath not despised their petition (Ps. 101:18). And, The prayer of him that humbleth himself shall pierce the clouds: and till it come nigh he will not be comforted. (Ecclus. 35:21). Therefore, he immediately starts his prayer in humility, saying: For this cause, that you fail not in the faith, I bow my knees to the Father. This is a symbol of humility for two reasons. First, a man belittles himself, in a certain way, when he genuflects, and he subjects himself to the one he genuflects before. In such a way he recognizes his own weakness and insignificance. Secondly, physical strength is present in the knees; in bending them a man confesses openly to his lack o f s t r e n g t h . Thus external, physical symbols are shown to God for the purpose of renewing and spiritually training the inner soul. This is expressed in the prayer of Manasse: I bend the knee of my heart. For every knee shall be bowed to me: and every tongue shall swear (Is. 45:24).

We adore You, O Christ, and we bless You. Because of Your Holy Cross, You have redeemed the world.

NEW PARISHIONERS: Newcomers are encouraged to register with the parish and are welcome to participate in all parish activities and ministries. Registration forms are available in the back of the Church.

Sacrament of Penance
Often known as the Sacrament of Confession or Reconciliation today, Penance offers us forgiveness of our sins, through absolution offered by the priest, who acts, as in the Mass, in the person of Christ. Penance is a Sacrament in which the sins committed after Baptism are forgiven. The Sacrament of Penance, commonly called Confession, is one of the seven sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church. Catholics believe that all of the sacraments were instituted by Jesus Christ himself. In the case of Confession, that institution occurred on Easter Sunday, when Christ first appeared to the apostles after his Resurrection. Breathing on them, he said: Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained (John 20:2223). That reconciling of man to God is the purpose of Confession. When we sin, we deprive ourselves of Gods grace. And by doing so, we make it even easier to sin some more. The only way out of this downward cycle is to acknowledge our sins, to repent of them, and to ask Gods forgiveness. Then, in the Sacrament of Confession, grace can be restored to our souls, and we can once again resist sin.

Confession
Pope Pius XII [1939-1958] said, Mankind is losing its sense of sin. Pope John Paul II [1978-2005] said, Mankind has lost its sense of sin. Pope Benedict XVI speaks of the need for confession. The corruption of sin is evident everywhere in the world. This is evident even among some who consider themselves practicing Catholics, but go to Holy Communion without first making a good confession after sins such as adultery, deliberate drunkenness, serious dishonesties in business dealings, neglect of the family, and financing by poor planning. How many today realize that it is seriously sinful to deliberately entertain dirty thoughts with no effort to control the mind and imagination? Jesus said that if a man even looks at a woman with lust he has already committed that sin. All mortal sins, of which penitents after diligent self-examination are conscious, must be recounted by them in confession even if they are most secret. [Catechism of the Catholic Church 1456] According to the Churchs command, After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year. Anyone who is aware of having committed a mortal sin must not receive Holy Communion even if he experiences deep contrition, without having first received sacramental absolution. [CCC 1457] Children must go to the sacrament of penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first time. [CCC 1457] Going to Holy Communion with mortal sin on the soul is another mortal sin called a sacrilege. What about going to confession when only venial or every day, small faults have been committed? Without being strictly necessary the Church nevertheless encourages confession for spiritual growth. To make a good confession one must confess all mortal sins and circumstances which may change their nature. It would be a bad or sacrilegious confession to deliberately conceal or not to confess a known mortal sin. One could fool a priest, but not God who is really the one who forgives sin through the instrumentality of the priest, who by ordination in Holy Orders has the indelible mark of Christs priesthood sealed on his soul forever. In addition to confessing our sins we must have contrition for them.
