Bicycle Ambulance Project

At BEN Namibia

The BEN Namibia Bicycle Ambulance

can help sick people access health care
when transportation is otherwise
inaccessible or unaffordable. The
ambulance has a removable stretcher
with an adjustable backrest, a sun/rain
canopy, and a handle for pulling
manually or with any bicycle.

These ambulances are often managed and

used by Home Based Care workers. Our
production ambulance is designed based
on information received from a five-
month prototyping process, in which four
ambulance prototype iterations were
tested by several Home Based Care
groups and an overnight-care centre near
a hospital. The Fourth Prototype, pictured
here, was delivered to Catholic Aids
Action Home Based Care volunteers at
the Oshikuku Office. The ambulance
delivery includes training in operation,
repair, and management.

The Bicycle Ambulance can transport a client laying down or

sitting, depending on the medical condition and comfort preference.
