Procedure

ACTIVITY I Warmer Word Ball (Group work)

Aim: to warm Ss up
Time: 5 min.
Procedure: The students stand in a circle. The T. starts the game by saying a word while
throwing the ball a student. The student who gets the ball says another word starting with
the last letter of the previous word.
Interaction: Ss-Ss; Ss- T


ACTIVITY II - Reinforcing and checking the previous knowledge (Pair work)

Aim: to practice asking for and giving additional information
Time: 10 min.
Procedure: T. asks Ss. to get in pairs. She gives each pair Worksheet 1 and asks them to
fill in the blanks using a relative pronoun. The T asks the Ss to use each relative pronoun
only once. After finishing sentences are read aloud.

ACTIVITY III Pre-reading Sights in London (Group work)

Aims: to create interest and introduce Ss into the topic
Time: 5 min.
Procedure: The teacher asks the students questions about London and displays a PPT
presentation of London accompanied by music. She prompts answers from the students.
Ex. What is London?
Where is it?
What important person for the British lives in London?
Do you know any sights? Which ones? etc
Interaction: Ss Ss, Ss-T
ACTIVITY IV While-reading (Group work)

Aims: to practice reading for specific information
Time: 15 min.
Procedure: The teacher divides the class in two groups and gives each group a copy of
the text about London Worksheet 2. Each group has a specific task to do while reading
Worksheet 3.

ACTIVITY V Post-reading Advertisement (Group-work)

Aim: to use the information acquired in designing an advertisement
Time: 10 min.
Procedure: Ss are given large sheets of paper, they are asked to design an advertisement
of the places in London based on the text read, the PPT and on the pictures given by the
teacher representing sights in London. Then, they present their advertisement in front of
the class.

ACTIVITY VI - Evaluation and homework assignment

Aim: to evaluate the Ss. work
to assign Ss. their homework
Time: 5 min
Procedure: The teacher grades some Ss. As homework the teacher gives the students the
following task: Write a postcard to a friend describing him/her what sights you have seen
in London. You may draw the sight if you like.

Worksheet 2

London is the capital of the Great Britain. It is the largest city in Britain and in Europe.
London has a population of over 7 million inhabitants. It lies on the river Thames which
has been a trade and transport route since early times. London is full of wonderful places
to visit. These places are called sights.
Buckingham Palace is the Queens official and main royal London home. Queen
Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip live here. Buckingham Palace is used also for
the administrative work for the monarchy. Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms including
19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. The Royal
Guards changes at 11:30 every day much to the delight of the tourists. They wear red
uniforms and bearskin hats.
Big Ben is one of the most landmarks in the world. The clock tower is part of the Palace
of Westminster. Big Ben does not refer to the whole clock tower but to the huge 13 ton
bell that strikes the hour.
The Houses of Parliament or the Palace of Westminster is the place where the two
houses of the Parliament of the united Kingdom (The House of Lords and The House of
Commons) conduct their sittings. It is the place where laws governing British life are
debated and passed.
Westminster Abbey is one of the oldest buildings in London and one of the most
important religious centres in the country. Every King and Queen has been crowned
here. Many Kings and Queens and famous people are buried here.
Piccadilly Circus is a busy square in the heart of London. It is famous for the fountain
that lies in the middle of it. It is the favourite place for people to socialize before going to
the nearby shopping areas.
Trafalgar Square is a square used for political demonstrations and community
gatherings, such as the celebration of New Year's Eve. The name commemorates
the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars over
France.
Tower Bridge is the only Thames bridge which can be raised. Huge engines raise the
bridge sections, which weigh about 1000 tons each, in just one minute.
The Tower of London is a symbol of the nation. It was modified by the kings and
queens, turned into a fortress, a prison and a place of execution. Today the Tower is the
home to the Crown Jewels.
London Eye lies near the Thames. It has the shape of a huge wheel, provided with
capsules from which you can see great sights which are not visible from the ground.
Madam Tussauds is the most famous wax museum in the world. It houses life-size
statues of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, David Beckham, Lady Gaga, Michael
Jackson.
The British Museum is famous for its 9 million collections: books, manuscripts,
Egyptian mummies, paintings and other works of art.
