Powertel Communications (Pvt) Ltd is a subsidiary of ZESA Holdings, the parent
company in charge of electricity generation, transmission and distribution in
Zimbabwe.
PowerTel was licensed as a data services operator in 2004 and in 2009 the
scope of its license was upgraded to encompass Internet Access Provision and
Cross Border interconnection with regional operators. The industry is regulated
by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe
(POTRAZ). The registered office of PowerTel is located at 10th Floor Kopje
Plaza, Number 1 Jason Moyo Avenue, Harare, Zimbabwe.
PowerTel operates high-speed optic-fibre telecommunications backbone and
distribution networks, and an access network comprised of a combination of
optic-fibre and wireless technologies. The backbone network is mainly based on
OPGW optic fibre strung on power lines and spans the following routes: Harare
to Plumtree via Kadoma, Kwekwe and Gweru; and Harare to Mutare via
Marondera and Rusape. PowerTel also has network presence in towns along the
Harare-Kariba, and Harare-Bindura routes. The OPGW backbone network is
interconnected regionally to Botswana and Mozambique. PowerTel became the
first company in Zimbabwe to connect to international internet exchange points
(New York, London, Amsterdam) through the SAT3 and Seacomm submarine
optic fibre cables. PowerTels backbone network interconnects national cities
and towns to facilitate VPN service, mobile internet and VoIP services through a
CDMA (3G) network. A significant proportion of the backbone transmission
capacity is leased to other large fixed and mobile telecommunications operators.
