Warm Ups Cool Downs

This document provides guidance on warm-up and cool-down activities for children. It discusses the importance of warm-ups in preparing the body for activity and preventing injury. Warm-ups should gradually increase intensity and involve the muscle groups needed. Cool-downs are also important for recovery and flexibility. A variety of tag-based and instruction-based warm-up games are described, including activities like Alligator in the Swamp and Secret Doctor. Stretching guidelines emphasize including dynamic stretches in warm-ups and static stretches in cool-downs.

Introduction
Warm-up and cool-down acti$ities should be incorporated into an. training as
well as competition routines. The warm-up prepares the bod. for acti$it./ as
well as helping to pre$ent in0ur. to muscles/ which can be more susceptible to
in0ur. when cold. The cool-down helps the bod. clear lactic acid that builds up
during an. acti$it.. 1ess lactic acid means less soreness and stiffness the ne-t
da.2
What is the ideal warm!up"
The ideal warm-up will depend on the sport/ the le$el of competition and the
age of the participants. # warm-up should incorporate the muscle groups and
acti$ities that are re3uired during training or competition. The intensit. of the
warm-up should begin at a low le$el graduall. building to the le$el of intensit.
re3uired during training or competition.
4or most athletes/ % to &' minutes is enough. 5owe$er in cold weather the
duration of the warm-up should be increased.
The warm-up aims to:
prepare the bod. and mind for the acti$it.
increase the bod.6s core temperature
increase heart rate
increase breathing rate.
What about the cool!down"
Too man. coaches neglect the cool-down at the end of a session. It is 0ust as
important/ especiall. after $igorous e-ercise because the bod. needs time to
slow down and it is an important step in aiding reco$er.. The cool down should
occur immediatel. after training acti$ities and should last % to&' minutes.
The cool-down can be the same sort of e-ercise as the warm-up but with low
intensit. bod. mo$ement such as 0ogging or wal7ing substituted for running.
Stretching after acti$it. helps to ensure ma-imum fle-ibilit./ rela- the muscles/
return them to their resting length and helps de$elop long-term attitudes to
maintaining health. lifest.les.
Stretchin#"
Stretching acti$ities can be included in the warm-up and cool down. There is
now less emphasis on static-stretching during the warm-up/ so stretches
should mo$e the muscle groups through the full range of mo$ement re3uired
in the acti$it. being performed 8acti$e stretching9.
Static stretching is still appropriate during the cool-down and can be used to
impro$e fle-ibilit..
Some rules when stretching:
warm-up the bod. prior to stretching
stretch before and after e-ercise 8acti$e stretching during the warm up/
static stretching during the cool down9
stretch all muscle groups that will be in$ol$ed in the acti$it.
stretch gentl. and slowl.
ne$er bounce or stretch rapidl.
stretch gentl. to the point of mild discomfort/ ne$er pain
do not hold .our breath when stretching: breathing should be slow and
eas..
do not ma7e stretches competiti$e.
