The Hand Test is a projective technique that utilizes ten unbound 3.5 x 4.5
inch cards, nine with simple line drawings of single hands and one blank
card, to measure how the viewer interprets what each hand is doing (the
blank card is left to the imagination of viewer). Verbal responses are given
or "projected" by the viewer, and the results are recorded, scored and
interpreted by the administrator.
First developed in the early 1960s in reaction to professional controversy
over projective techniques like the Rorschach, Wagner presented the Hand
Test as a "starting point" or "narrow band" instrument that "does not
necessarily measure all major aspects of personality but does assess the
individual's behavioral tendencies." (Wagner, 1983). For over forty years,
this method has been proven to be effective in measuring overt and
aggressive behavior.

Hand Test has been administered to well over one million people.

The Hand Test is a simple projective technique widely used to measure
action tendenciesparticularly acting-out and aggressive behaviorin
adults and children (at least 5 years of age). No threatening and easily
administered in just 10 minutes, its an ideal starting point in any
diagnostic personality evaluation. Using pictures of hands as the
projective medium, the Hand Test elicits responses that reflect
behavioral tendencies. The client is shown 10 picture cards, one at a
time. These contain simple line drawings of a hand in various positions.
The clients task is to explain what each hand is doing. To score the
Hand Test, you simply classify responses according to clear-cut
quantitative and qualitative scoring categories.The quantitative scores
(such as Aggression, Exhibition, Communication, Dependence,
Acquisition, Tension, and Withdrawal) reflect the individuals overt
behaviorhow he or she interacts with others and the environment. The
qualitative scores generally reflect feelings and motivations underlying
the imparted action tendencies. The test also provides six summary
scores, including an index of overall pathology and acting-out ratio,
which is used to predict aggressive behavior. The Hand Test can be
used with anyone old enough to verbalize a response. The Manual
provides means, cut-off scores, and typical score ranges for normal
adults and for adults in the following diagnostic groups: alcoholism,
mental retardation, organic brain syndrome, schizophrenia, conduct
disorder, anxiety disorders, affective disorders, somatoform disorders,
histrionic personality disorder, schizoid personality disorder, and other
personality disorders.
