Course Description Financial accounting communicates economic information and serves as a tool for business decision making. Through financial accounting, accountants track how money circulates in an organization. This course provides an understanding of the fundamental principles of double entry accounting as applied to practical business situations. Emphasis is given to the following: debit and credit rules of accounting, T-accounts, journalizing transactions, adjusting entries for revenue and expense items, inventories, internal control with emphasis on cash, and accounting information systems. Students will be able to prepare and use an income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows. Policies Faculty and students/learners will be held responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies contained within the following two documents: • University policies: You must be logged into the student website to view this document. • Instructor policies: This document is posted in the Course Materials forum. University policies are subject to change. Be sure to read the policies at the beginning of each class. Policies may be slightly different depending on the modality in which you attend class. Week One: Accounting Information and Financial Systems Details Due Points Objectives 1.1 Recognize the role accounting plays in business. 1.2 Define different types of business organizations. 1.3 Discuss the four basic financial statements. Course Preparation Read the course description and objectives. Read the instructor’s biography and post your own. Readings Read Ch. 1 & 2 of Fundamental Accounting Principles. Read Appendix A regarding the final project requirements. Participation Participate in class discussion. Requirement – at least 2 substantive posts on four different days (the answers to your DQ’s DOES count towards participation – so you will have to post at least 6 responses in addition to the DQ answers for a total of at least 8 posts). 20 Discussion Questions Respond to weekly discussion questions. 1. Describe one of the four basic financial statements and answer the following questions. o For what is it typically used? o What information is the most valuable? o How does it complement or connect to another financial statement? Respond to a classmate who selected a different financial statement from yours. How do the financial statements tie into one another? 2. The Accounting Equation states: Assets = Liabilities + Owner’s Equity. Choose one of these three account classifications define it, state its normal balance (Dr. or Cr.) and list some examples.
