Every year, during the first

week of July, West Of
publishes our Summer
Double edition. This issue
stays on the racks for
an extra week and is
our annual Guide To
West Ashley Living.
Each time theres
usually some fun
but nonsensical theme
that goes throughout
the entire issue. Weve
used everything from
plundering pirates to
super heroes, from
wild west outlaws to
circus sideshow
freaks,
and
even created
a West Ashley
Zodiac
one
year
(my
personal
favorite).
At the heart of The Almanac was a
calendar, which began in July of the
current year and ended in June of the
following year. Admittedly, this was not
the most logical calendar cycle. But the
issue was always our most popular of
the year and readers loved the calendar,
even if it was slightly hard to follow.
This year, instead of doing the
calendar-based Almanac issue in the
summer, we decided to move it to our
special Winter Double Issue, coming out
in late December/early January. Imagine
that, a calendar that starts in January?
Crazy, we know. But what would we

do for our Summer Double Issue,

which had become our most creative
and fun issue of the entire year?
Without further ado, were
proud to introduce Westopoly!
Inspired by the classic board
game
Monopoly,
Westopoly isnt an
actual game, but
more just a fun
way to illustrate
our
annual
Guide To West
Ashley Living.

Because
at
its core, a
traditional
Monopoly
board is a snapshot of a community,
it lends itself to highlighting those
businesses and organizations that make
West Ashley special. The other iconic
imagery, from the money and tokens
to the Chance and Community Chest
cards, are also a playful way to relay to
our readers interesting offers and useful
information about living in West Ashley.
It has been a lot of work to put
together this Westopoly issue, but
we think the end result is worth it.
We hope you enjoy reading it as
much as we did putting it together.

When owner Chris Stewart first

opened The Glass Onion, the idea was
simply to create a quality neighborhood
restaurant
off
the
peninsula.
What he and a few friends, some of
them devoted customers, would help
solidify was the idea that truly fine dining

until their flavors explode in the mouth.
Like the chicken liver mousse,
whipped airy and light, served on simple
crackers, the dish brings together rustic
approaches to food with a metropolitan
pulse as the creaminess of the livers give
way to the salty, briny under notes, and
the crunch of the cracker is offset by the
sweetness of the in-house made jelly.
Theres certainly a worldliness about The
Glass Onion, probably because there are
farms all over the globe. While many of

The smoky, earthy, and never

Ray will soon embark on a different
kind of brew, as he is in the final
throes of putting together a pizza

as putting the finishing touches of a
portable stationary bike-racing company
that will visit other restaurants.

beef on Tuscan bread for lunch or a cup
of coffee and a bagel for breakfast, head

ago Folly Beach City Council passed an
ordinance banning alcohol on the beach.

There probably arent many chef/

operators in West Ashley who sleep over
at their restaurants three nights a week like
Anthony DiBernardo does at Swig & Swine.
Then again, there are probably not
a lot of owners like DiBernardo in West
Ashley. Or Charleston. Or South Carolina
A native of a small Philly suburb,
DiBernardo went from cooking meals for
submariners in the Navy to cutting his

culinary teeth downtown at Blossom

and then at The Kiawah Island Inn.
Tacking from fine dining to
comfort food, DiBernardo worked
for Sal Parco (Mustard Seed,
Boulevard Diner, Sette) for seven
years before running the kitchen
at Ritas Seaside Grille on Folly
Beach before finding a partnership with
the Kish family of Queen Street Hospitality
Group (82 Queen, Lowcountry Bistro).
Barbecue is my passion, says DiBernardo,
whose wife wondered why the big switch. If
Im having to sleep up here three nights a
week on a cot in the back tending the pit,
just to make pasta, then theres a problem.
Creating his signature barbecue has been
a trailblazing effort, too, as DiBernardo
has assiduously avoided copying any one

or

any regions style.

My sweet red sauce starts
out with caramelized onions,
oranges and rosemary as the
foundation before the classic
ingredients of molasses,
brown sugar and red tomatoes
are added, says DiBernardo
Ive built my sauces
to complement the meat;
I built the sweet red to
complement the brisket and
the Alabama white, with its mayonnaise
and lemon juice and horseradish, to
complement the pork belly and turkey.
The smoke pit runs 24 hours a day, seven days
a week, thanks to overnights from DiBernardo
and a helper. They start off the meats with
hickory until theres enough smoke to carry

Somehow, Beth Burrell and Seana Flynn have

been able to shoehorn everything they have going
on at Consign Charleston into a 40,000 squarefoot space along Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.
While one-fourth of the space is reserved for
back storage, there are items from more than
9,000 consigners out on the floor, according to
Flynn, who handpicks and hand-prices every item.

There really isnt a more communal food

than pizza. Its cut into slices so it can be
shared among friends. So Paisan, which is
slang in Italian for compatriot or friend, is
the perfect name for a pizza restaurant. And
Paisanos Pizza Grill owners Nick Skover
and Mark Slater were true Paisans long
before they opened their first pizzeria. The
two best friends had long shared a passion
for eating, drinking, and making pizzas.

In 2009 Skover and Slater

opened their first Paisanos Pizza
Grill on James Island using fresh
ingredients and bubbling cheese

West Ashley Charles Towne Landing,
Magnolia Plantation, Drayton Hall, to name

that have even been open 10 years. There

three-decade mark. As its logo
proudly states, RPub has been a

Robert
Richmond purchased the bar in
2003. It seems fitting that someone whos
initials are R.R. would take over a bar named
RPub. But the actual name of the bar had
little to do with why he bought the place. It
was just the right price at the right time in

then, Richmond saw the potential for this
part of town and this little neighborhood bar.

I was living in Atlanta at the time, but

had been to Charleston to visit, and just fell
in love with the city, he recalls. So shortly

sale that had a lot of character
and a lot of characters
frequenting the place. Its those
characters, the loyal regulars,
whom Richmond credits for
RPubs longevity.

After several years of owning and

running bars in downtown Charleston,
business partners Reay Rountree, Ralph
Capasso, and Dennis Schafer wanted to do
something different. So about four years
ago, when a space came available in the still
blossoming Avondale area of West Ashley,
the threesome decided to shift gears and use
their combined expertise and open a place

Its hard to miss the golden facade
