Assignment # 7 Proposed Surcharge Design: Civ 324 Geotechnical Engineering II

This document summarizes the results of a geotechnical engineering assignment analyzing the proposed surcharge design for a wide fill. The primary consolidation settlement was calculated to be 0.172m using the 3D computer model and 0.169m using hand calculations. The total consolidation settlement after 30 years was 0.298m from the computer model and 0.277m from hand calculations, a difference of 2cm. Based on these results, the proposed surcharge design of dimensions 60m by 45m and 6.5m height was expected to settle 0.3m after 4 months, consistent with the computer model results.

Summary of Results
Hand Calculation Settle 3-D
Primary consolidation 0.169m (17cm) 0.172m (17cm)
Total consolidation (30 yrs) 0.277m (28 cm) 0.298m (30cm)
Proposed surcharge M: 0.302m (30cm) N:0.279m (28cm)

1.1.Graph. 3D view of settlement with wide fill

1.2. Graph Plot of Primary consoledation with wide fill

2

1.3. Hand calculation of primary consolidation

Using the graph from settle-3D the primary consolidation appears to settle 0.172 meters (17cm)
at point m which is about 3.5 meters below ground level. This happens at approximately 3 years
into settlement. The hand calculated value for settlement was 0.169m which is 17cm also. The
hand calculated value is very close to the computer generated value and for practical purposes
the difference are negligible.

2.1. 3-D view of settlement at 30 years
2.2. Graph of total settlement at 30 years

4

2.3. Hand Calculation of secondary consolidation and total settlement

From the graph of settle -3D the total settlement at 30 years for the wide fill is at 0.298 m which
is 30 cm. From the hand calculation the total settlement for 30 years appears to be 0.277m which
is 28 cm. There is a 2 cm discrepancy between computer program Settle 3D and hand
calculations. The difference can probably be explained by the computer using incremental
thickness to calculate total consolidation while hand calculations use the thickness of clay to do
the calculations. Also because of the long time length of settlement (30 years) therefore minor
discrepancies occur in the values.

4.1.a. Isometric view of proposed surcharge design

4.2.a. Plan view of proposed surcharge design

4.3.a. Cross sectional view of proposed surcharge design

4.4.a. Graph of settlement vs. depth at 4 month (120days)

4.5.b. Graph of settlement distribution along the line between m and n.
The proposed surcharge will have a settlement of 0.3m which is 30 cm after 4 month, 120 days.
This is close to the 3-D settlement value calculated in problem 2. The dimension of the proposed
surcharge is 60m by 45m with height of 6.5m. After 4 month the surcharge can be turned into
the wide fill.
