SkyTrack system description
Introduction
SkyTrack is a unique and effective system designed for data collection and
processing in any kind of mobile business. System can be used in small, big or
mixed fleets and is suitable for all types of vehicles including trucks, vans, cars,
trains, ships, machines, etc.
SkyTrack system is a result of independent development of Artronic
Corporation and is constantly improving as markets needs arise. Artronic has
focused research, product engineering and design efforts on the development of
AVL and other tracking systems that are reliable, easy to use and fully
customizable.
SkyTrack system provides the customer with high quality and innovative
product for competitive price. SkyTrack system is implemented in more than 50
companies.

Brief overview
The SkyTrack is a sophisticated system consisting of multiple hardware
and software products, implemented in vehicles, on central location and on client
computers.



All the collected data in vehicles (location, speed, sensors data, wholesale
and retail data, delivery data, etc.) are safely transferred (CSD, GPRS, Wireless,
etc.) to central location where they are stored and processed in SkyTrack central
server and, if needed, forwarded to other IT systems.
Acquired data are accessible by client computers via SkyTrack set of
applications which enable visual, synthetic and analytic overview.
Remote access is available via Pocket PC or PDA computer, which enables
user to directly connect either to the vehicle or to the central site and
immediately receive full fleet status.

Vehicle implementation
The SkyTrack Mobile (STM) device is installed in the vehicle as the basic
component of the system. The installation is fixed and usually out of reach for
the driver. The SkyTrack Mobile device has several input/output ports, an
expansion bus and RS232 ports used for connecting terminals and equipment.
Apart from the standard set of GPS data, which includes location, speed
and direction, acceleration is another piece of information being measured.
Moreover, signals from the vehicle which can be related to starting and shutting
off the engine, opening and closing the valves and/or doors, are connected to the
digital input ports. Sensors are connected to the analog inputs, and the Microbox
device used for the supervision of fluid dispensing via Micromotion device is
connected to the expansion bus. The message exchange and/or managing of the
retail or wholesale business from the vehicle are conducted via Hand Held
Terminal which is connected to the serial port.
All the acquired data are stored in the internal memory of the SkyTrack
Mobile device where they remain protected in case of sudden power failure. The
data are kept safe and protected until they are transferred to the SkyTrack
central server. A specially designed algorithm for optimizing data and the size of

internal memory are powerful enough to provide several months of collecting
data without need for transfer.
Due to this unique way of functioning, the system is completely
independent of the GSM network and SkyTrack central server availability,
ensuring undisturbed and fully functionality of both driver and vehicle.
Hand-held terminal, which is used for conducting retail and wholesale
business, as well as receiving and exchanging messages with the SkyTrack
central server, is connected to the SkyTrack Mobile (STM) device using RS232
cable (optional Wireless). All the sales data are stored in the SkyTrack Mobile
device and are automatically transferred as soon as the connection with the
SkyTrack central server is established. At the same time, data from the server
(price-list, addresses) are stored in the STM device and, once it is available,
forwarded to the Hand Held Terminal.
The SkyTrack Mobile device is very robust in design and contains high
voltage, overheat and short circuit protections. STM device can also be used as,
so-called, black box. The STM device can be remotely controlled, configured and
upgraded.

Data transfer



For the SkyTrack system Artronic developed own 3A protocol (Artronic
Advanced Air) to ensure safe and protected data transfer with minimal overhead.
The data is transferred via GPRS and/or CSD, and system can be
configured according to the providers fee and calculation unit.

Data collection and transfer mode are configured centrally according to the
requirements for each individual vehicle. This enables user to have a complete
control over the communication expenses.
SkyTrack central server at the users central site as well as the SkyTrack
mobile device in the vehicle acts as interstorage devices and routers which
ensure fast and safe transfer for every piece of information, as well as
independent functioning of each part of the system, regardless of the links
existence and quality at any given point of time.
In order to enable GPRS acquiring and exchanging data, SkyTrack central
server needs to have access to the Internet, either via cable or ADSL.
SkyTrack central server
On the users central site location, the receiving, processing and storing of
the data is performed by the SkyTrack central server. All received data are
stored in the SQL database where they are being processed in order to produce
complete statistics, synthetics and analytics of the fleets activities.


SkyTrack central server

SkyTrack central server contains all the necessary services needed for
successful and uninterrupted functionality of the SkyTrack system.
SkyTrack CSD server and SkyTrack GPRS server collect GPS and other
data from the SkyTrack Mobile devices, exchange messages and files, and finally
upload the settings and the newest firmware to the devices. The system
functions automatically, and its performance is controlled by the SkyTrack

Administrator application. If the SkyTrack Xchange server is installed on the
SkyTrack central server, the service is automatically activated when processing
and storing files.
The SkyTrack SMS server forwards given messages (as SMS messages) to
predefined telephone numbers.
The SkyTrack Xchange server is responsible for automatic and/or
semiautomatic exchange of data with other IT solutions. The server can obtain
data either from the files or directly from the database.
The SkyTrack Xchange server functions via SkyTrack connectors which are
programmed and configured according to the user requirements.
The SkyTrack AVL gateway is used for distribution of GPS and other data
collected from SkyTrack Mobile devices to another AVL (Automatic Vehicle
Location) or GIS system. The SkyTrack AVL server can receive GPS and other
data from other AVL systems.
The SkyTrack Remote server enables remote access for PDA devices with
SkyTrack PDA position manager application installed, while the SkyTrack
Replication server ensures automatic asynchronous data replication among
several hierarchically positioned SkyTrack central servers.

If SkyTrack central servers are hierarchically organized, the vehicle data is
acquired centrally and all required data is distributed through complete
hierarchy.
The size and configuration of the SkyTrack central server depends of the
number of the vehicles and the client computers. The SkyTrack central server is

always configured in the way to ensure safety and availability of the stored data
and required services. The SkyTrack central server is delivered with all the
necessary services already installed, and is always adjusted to user and
application requirements.
One or more SkyTrack Data/SMS communicators (or other GSM modems)
can be connected to the SkyTrack central server in order to enable direct access
to the SkyTrack Mobile devices in vehicles, enable sending SMS messages and
other necessary services.

Client applications
SkyTrack Applications Suite is a supreme tool designed for collecting,
processing and analyzing the fleet performance data. It provides an overall and
detailed view of fleet location, position, and status which enables the user to
react instantly and adequately. The application suite also makes the planning
easier, quicker and more accurate what results in a more efficient decision-
making.
To satisfy the requirements of the SkyTrack applications, The Artronic
Corporation developed an extremely fast map engine which provides user with
an astonishing dynamic view of real-time events.
The SkyTrack applications suite uses maps in vector format and includes
all the necessary tools for converting the maps into the Artronic Enhanced map
format so that almost any map can be used in the SkyTrack application suite.
SkyTrack Position Manager
The SkyTrack Position Manager gives us a complete overview of current
location of the fleet vehicles, their movements and routes, a complete
reconstruction of the eventa and some basic statistics. The application enables
the user to set geo-objects and define geo-zones and vehicle routes.

Advantages
The greatest advantage of the SkyTrack system is the fact that the system
entirely belongs to the user, and therefore the lease, connection and data access
will not be charged by the Artronic Corporation. All the data are stored on the
SkyTrack central server kept at a user location which ensures additional safety
for the system.
In case of acquiring and exchanging data with the SkyTrack Mobile devices
in vehicles via GPRS connection, at the central location neither leased line nor
GPRS gateway are necessary the system functions even via Dynamic DNS and
therefore cheap standard ADSL access will be sufficient.
A specially developed protocol for data exchange via wireless connection
ensures a safe reception of each piece of data, and by adjusting parameters it is
possible to maximally adjust data transfer to the providers calculation unit and
tariff in order to minimize expenses.
Since the SkyTrack central server is located at user place, the connection
with already existing IT solutions is made much easier and it is possible to
entirely automatize data exchange. It also enables much faster data access and
producing extensive and highly complex reports.
Due to ultrafast map engine, it is possible to view dynamic activities in
real-time.
The SkyTrack system is scalable and flexible, and can be easily adjusted to
user size and needs.
The whole system, including all the applications and hardware, is
developed in the Artronic Corporation, which enables quick and simple
development and design of additional hardware and software modules for system
expansion upon request.
With individual approach, each and every user is guaranteed maximal
exploitability and automatization of the system with minimal maintenance
expenses.

Some existing implementations
The Artronic Corporation has so far sold few thousand SkyTrack Mobile
devices, and it has implemented its system in several dozen companies.

INA PROPlin Croatia gas distribution company
In INA PROPlin the SkyTrack system was implemented in the vehicles used
for distribution of liquefied gas. The system is primary used for monitoring the
movement of the vehicles, fuel consumption and dispensing (communication with
the Micromotion device for dispensing). Retail and wholesale of liquefied gas are
also implemented, and the data are automatically transferred and acquired from
the business system of the company. The fuel dispensing from the fuel tank is
being monitored and the amount of fuel sold is then being compared to the
already existing data.
AWT International Croatia wholesale distributor
The company implemented the devices in the vehicles used by the
salesmen to visit stores and take orders. The system is used for monitoring
salesman movement with the vehicle and for transferring customer orders. The
SkyTrack system is connected to the already existing business system in the
company via automatic data exchange.
Gavrilovic Croatia meat industry
SkyTrack system is implemented in all the vehicles in the company. Apart
from receiving standard reports, the device is used to track the changes in
temperature in refrigerated trailer trucks. The system is connected to the
SkyTrack fleet application.
Komunalac Opatija, Croatia
SkyTrack system is used for monitoring of garbage dispensing via tracking
garbage trucks, street cleaning trucks, etc. System is used for monitoring the
locations where waste is being collected and dumped, as well as for determining
city coverage, optimal routes, etc. As part of the project, RFID technology was
implemented on the vehicles and garbage cans, and the application for automatic
charge for the service provided is being developed.

Artronic Company
The Artronic Corporation was founded in 1990 with the aim of developing,
producing and implementing solutions in the fields of informatics and industrial
and biomedical electronics.
Today, the company employs more than 20 highly educated experts and
a significant number of outside collaborators.
Since it was founded, the company developed numerous products and
projects. The most prominent ones are:
The entire project design and organization of the computer network for
Energy Institute Hrvoje Poar, Ekonerg and Board for Regulation of Energy
Distribution.
The project design and development of the system of monitoring the
process of production in the Gavrilovic company, HACCP, including the
development of special sensors for measuring temperature, humidity, flow and
consumption of electricity. The company also developed a project consisting of
connecting central site with other offices and retail stores.
Remote crane navigation and regulation of lighting in large workshops
were the projects designed for the Koncar Energy Transformers.
Devices for remote surveillance and data acquisition; e.g. measuring the
level of rain for Croatian road transport and surveillance of drinking water in
reservoirs Gradin Karlovac
Devices for automatic operating of the public lighting, designed for
several dozen tunnels, loops, underpasses and for city public lighting (developed
for the companies IPZ-Spelprojekt, Dalekovod and Elrem).
Operating the lighting was developed for Hotel Sheraton, St Mark's
Church, soccer stadium NK Varteks, etc.
Development and production of dentist devices (Endometer, Iontodent)
for several thousand users.
Development and production of several models of central watches with
radio and satellite setting of the correct time intended for public watches, railway
stations, churches, radio stations, schools... Most of the users include
watchmaker's workshop Lebarovic (all public watches in Zagreb), bus terminal
and railway station in Zagreb, airport in Dubrovnik, Croatian Catholic Radio, etc.
The Artronic Corporation has been for many years working closely with
Faculty of electronics and computer science, Institute for electronical systems
and information processing (FER-ZESOI) in Zagreb, Croatia.
