Strathmore Council called an emergency
council meeting to officially censure Mayor Michael Ell under the Municipal Government Act
and the Strathmore Code of the Ethics on Oct.
29.
It has been determined by Strathmore Town
Council that Mayor Michael Ell has over the past
year committed a series of breaches of the Town
of Strathmore Mayor and Councilor Code of Ethics and Conduct Policy and the statutory obligations set out in the Municipal Government Act,
R.S.A. 2000 Chapter M-26, with respect to communication with town administration and staff,
councilor involvement in the towns administrative functions. The Mayors conduct has created
significant concerns for both town administration and council, said Deputy Mayor Pat Fule.
Councillor Rocky Blokland and Councillor
Denise Peterson gave comment at the meeting. The video feed can be seen on the Town of
Strathmore website.
It is important for us as councilors, our CAO
and Deputy CAO, said Blockland. Mayor and
council are bound by rules and regulations governed by the MGA, Mayor and Council Code of
Ethics and Conduct policy and council procedural policy. Sometimes, as in life, we stray from
these guidelines and cross that line at which
point a correction and an intervention has to
take place. Today council has used this option
at this meeting to enforce and correct the issues. Its important to know is councils extreme
united desire to move forward as a team, with
our CAO and Deputy CAO to do whats best for
Strathmore, which is why we are all here in the
first place.
There were no specifics given in the meeting,
as to what Ell did other than implying interactions and communication with council, town
staff the CAO and Deputy CAO needed improvement. Many of the attendees at the meeting wanted more information than what was
stated in the motion.
Ell said that there were no skeletons in the
closet. He didnt see how making the specifics
public at this time would create a positive atmosphere. He said he would rather get on with
town business.
I will do my best to work within the parameters set by council, said Ell. If there are misunderstandings or misinterpretations, we need
to work together to clear them up and go forward.

Lights, camera, stand
up against bullying
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor
TV cameras rolled into
Westmount
Elementary
School on Oct. 29, all due to
the efforts of student Faith
Markel, under direction of
their Assistant Principal Mr.
Graff.
They entered a contest and
out of 1,600 schools across
Canada, Westmount School
was one of four that won
a personalized trip to their
school by Alexander Beaton and Jennifer Pappas that
play characters on the Austin
and Ally TV show and The
Next Step featured on the TV
Family Channel.
We are really excited to
be here today, said Pappas.
And you know what! You
are all TV stars, as this video
will be featured on Family
Channel.
Footage from each of the
four schools will be shown
in a special program surrounding anti-bullying and
displayed on their website
(www.family.ca/standup/).
Each of the students was
given a t-shirt featuring a
family channel logo and one
young man in the halls after
the assembly was overheard
saying, this is the best t-shirt
ever!
The students got to preview an unaired episode,
which featured an anti-cyberbullying message, and
Family Channel will be featuring more during its Bully
Awareness Week Nov. 17-23.
This tied in with the purpose
of the road show, to make
kids aware that bullying is
wrong and hurtful, bullying
is really a relationship problem, that promoting good
relationships and eliminating violence is everyones responsibility.
If even one student stands
up against bullying, it stops
within 10 seconds most of
the time, said researcher
Wendy Josephson, head researcher at Promoting Relationships and Eliminating
Violence Networks.
PrevNet is a research institute that is creating partnerships with businesses, organizations and educational
institutions to get different
social behavioural messages
to the public across Canada.
They are currently working
on 10 projects with anti-bullying as one of them. She said
it can be a challenge to get
research out to the people
that will use it. Along with
their programs they supply
teaching tools for the teacher and tip sheets for parents.
On this topic there is an 80
page teaching manual that
teachers can download and
work through with their students. If schools dont have
technology, the teachers
can contact the institute and
they will send materials out.
www.prevnet.ca
After the episode was
shown
Josephson
went
through some points with
the students. They discussed
effects of cyberbullying, how
to stand up for yourself or
someone else, and the word
retaliation. The children
were pointed to getting adult
help when things seem to
fail.
Equine Connections Kari
Fulmek, certified equine-assisted facilitator, and Carolyn
Charles, director of marketing and sales, were also at
the assembly to show students how equine teachers
can give them strong life
skills and boundaries.
At the end of the assembly
students got to dance to the
theme song written and sung
by the band Eleven Past One.
I was bullied in high
school, said Daniel Richter,
lead singer. I felt alienated
and can relate because I
have been there before.
Principal Wayne Funk said
they didnt normally dance in
assembly, but he was making
an exception for the guests.
Teachers and students mingled in an energized group,
dancing it all out in the auditorium, until they had to
return to class in an orderly
fashion.
The
Bradford
Exchange
Westmount Elementary School was fortunate to win a Canada-wide contest
to bring film crews to their school for a celebrity shoot on an anti-bullying
theme. Faith Markel worked with her Assistant Principal Graff to submit an
entry and they were one of four winners out of 1,600 schools that entered.

If we have an injury our blood platelets are
important in helping the blood to clot. Platelet levels
can drop due to disease, kidney dysfunction or even
drinking too much alcohol. Blood transfusions can
increase platelet levels but researchers are working
on new ways of making human platelets using
human stem cells. If successful, it will reduce the
demand for donor blood.

Men can get breast cancer too. Heres a few things
to watch for: nipples turning inward, puckering of
the skin in the breast area; nipples becoming red or
scaly; discharge from the nipples. See your doctor
for a check-up. Early detection means there is more
options for early successful treatment.
Door opens and closes
on open budget meetings
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor
A good intention to open the draft
budget discussions to the public was
announced on Oct. 30 by Strathmore
CAO Dwight Stanford.
We were excited about the idea, said
Stanford.
It was intended so the public could
pop in and see how council and administration work together, watching how
council decides where the money is
spent. Discussions happen over a threeday weekend, the public could observe
but they would not be able to comment
on anything in the meeting.
The open meeting was posted on the
town Facebook page.
However, later in the afternoon, it
was decided that council would need to
close the meeting, or go in camera, because there was information and many
confidential issues and that fall under
the Freedom of Information Protection
Act that could not be discussed in public.
According to Deputy CAO Linda Nel-
son that was why the meeting was once
again closed.
One resident questioned whether correct procedure was taken regarding the
announcement.
Council would need to hold an emergency meeting and vote on a motion to
allow public viewing of the budget discussions.
According to Section 194 of the Municipal Government Act, 24 hours notice from any posting is required prior
to any emergency meeting.
The 24-hour time limit can be waived
when an emergency meeting is called, if
papers of direction were signed by two
thirds of council, before calling for the
meeting.
Councillor Rocky Blokland said that
to his knowledge, no papers of direction for the waiver were presented for
him to sign.
Open budget discussions would have
been a first among many municipalities,
as most dont open working discussions, but present the final product to
the public through regular council sessions.
Bladder control isnt always easy for some people.
Sometimes its just a sneeze, a cough or sudden
laughter that will cause urine to flow and it can be
embarrassing. To have better bladder control, keep
your weight in control. Dont smoke. Smoking can
double your chances of developing incontinence.
Keep active. Keep coffee and alcohol consumption
down. These can irritate the bladder.
There are two vaccines that seniors should get.
One is the vaccine against pneumonia. The other is
the anti-shingles vaccine which is recommended for
all adults over 60 with no immune system problems.
You may have to pay for it yourself although some
private drug plans may cover it.
Strathmore RCMP are currently
investigating a hit and run collision
that occurred on November 1st at
approximately 5:30 pm. A Red Pathfinder
was stopped at the four way intersection
of 3rd Avenue and 4th Street by the Aztec
Reality Office when it was struck from
behind causing significant damage.
The suspect vehicle described as a
Black Pontiac Grand Am fled the scene
after impact. The suspect vehicle will
have significant damage and possibly
red paint transfer to the front end of
the vehicle. If you have any information
that could help assist in solving this
investigation please contact the
Strathmore RCMP.
Talk to our pharmacists about these and other
vaccines. Vaccines do work and save much pain and
health costs down the road.

According to Jerry Ward, public relations spokesman from Municipal Affairs
in Edmonton, censure is set by council
as a motion and can be taken off again
by a motion in council. The censure
could last for the mayors entire term if
council wishes. They are allowed to set
the terms and to lift the censure. Council need not contact the Alberta government indicating they have censured the

On Oct. 30, some Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) students had the opportunity to go out and give roses to the
business community to raise awareness for those who have experienced
violence.
Ever year we have the Red Rose
campaign and it happens in November,
we are doing it at the end of October
this year because it fell in with the auction we have on Saturday (the Crisis
Gala on Nov. 1), said Thomas.
The kids come around with me and
Mr. Hanson and they drop off to as
many businesses as we get to. So we
have 150 roses, we drop a rose and a
card to each business and basically the
kids just say to them, if you can take
this card and display it, its in memory
of the women, children and men in Alberta who died as victims of domestic
violence, said Thomas.
Thomas really admired how the students have come on board with this
campaign. It really educates the young
school kids, as well as showing how
important it is to prevent this kind of
violence.
It amazes me every year on how the
kids get into it. Some years we have
15 kids, others weve had 20 kids, this
year is a little smaller number but that
makes it more manageable to drive
around and do it, said Thomas. It
raises awareness for them too, because
as public educator of the shelter my
job is going to schools to do presentations.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Eugene & Ellen Helfrich
JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
Eugenes ancestors originated in Germany, but
were amongst the farmers who moved to Russia
during the reign of Catherine the Great. There was
a need for agricultural workers to operate farms in
Russia, so large numbers of German farmers answered the call for assistance.
However, when the Bolshevik Revolution began,
they became part of a mass migration known as
Germans from Russia; farmers living in Russia
who became very concerned for
their future, because of Russian
politics. In the late 1800s, many
of them dispersed throughout
the world, and the remainder
had to wait until after World
War Two to move to the west.
The Helfrich family searched for
farmland in the United States,
before finally settling in North
Dakota, then moving to Prelate,
Sask. in 1913.
As they travelled looking for land, their children
were born along the way, and Eugenes Dad Joe
was born in Oklahoma. Eugenes mothers family,
the Giegers, came directly to Canada from Russia,
and settled in Fox Valley, Sask.
Joe Helfrich and Aplonia Gieger were married in
1930, and farmed at Portrieve, Sask. where Eugene
was born in 1937, the middle child of a family of
nine. After Eugene finished Grade 1 in Portrieve,
the family moved to Leader, Sask. in 1944, where
he completed his education.
After graduating from High School, he worked in
the CIBC bank in Leader, before moving to Rockyford in 1957 to join his brothers who were building a feedmill. After Superior Feed and Supply in
Rockyford was completed, the brothers moved to
Strathmore to build another feedmill, now known
as Landmark Feeds Inc. on Hwy 817, south of
town. After selling the Strathmore feedmill in 1989,
Eugene worked as a realtor for Remax until he retired in 2011.
Ellens father - Roy Voutier - was born in North
Sidney, N.S. His ancestors were Huguenots from
France that settled in the Channel Islands and Newfoundland. Roy came west on a harvest train from
Eastern Canada, and worked for farmers in Saskatchewan and Alberta, before renting land in the
Nightingale area and starting farming on his own.
He met Ellens mother Nellie Den Boer at a dance
in Nightingale in 1941, and they were married in
1942. Nellies parents Peter and Martina Den Boer
were immigrants from the Netherlands, who had arrived in Canada
in 1914 and farmed at Baintree.
Roy and Nellie lived on the
farm in Nightingale until 1948,
when they purchased and moved
to a farm near Strathmore. This
farm was located at the east end
of Brent Blvd across George Freeman Trail, and has recently been
demolished to make way for the
new Prairie Edge Estates. Ellen was born in 1944,
the eldest of three children. She attended school in
Strathmore, and graduated from Samuel Crowther
High School in 1962. In between having family,
she attended night school at SAIT for five years,
and received her diploma in Clothing Construction
and Design. She later became a part-time teacher at
SAIT in these same subjects.
Eugene and Ellen met at a New Years Eve Dance
at the Memorial Hall in Strathmore in 1960, and
were married in 1963. Over the next few years, two
boys and two girls were added to their family, and
they now have seven grandchildren, with a greatgrandchild expected in November. As you can see,
family is a big part of their lives. After living in
town for a few years, they purchased the Voutier
Family Farm in 1973, building a new home next to
Ellens parents. In 2010, they moved to their new
home just north of town.
Eugene has always been very involved in the
community, and particularly with the Ag Society. He was part
of the committee that purchased the land now owned by the
Ag Society. He is Past President of Strathmore Lions Club,
where he has been a member for 50 years.
His summers are spent golfing, gardening and some farming, whilst winter activities include curling and playing bridge.
Ellen enjoys cooking, reading, playing bridge, and she always
finds time for projects with her sewing machine. They both
enjoy travelling and look forward to visiting new places and
new countries.
When I asked Eugene what changes hed seen in the last
50+ years, his response was You now have to remove your
keys and lock your vehicle, when you park downtown!

THE SCAR OF WAR
In the last week of October I had the
opportunity to spend a few days in
Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon),
Vietnam. This was a very important
moment for me. I grew up in the Bay
Area of California in the 60s and 70s.
We had relatives and family friends
who were in the US military at that
time, but I was just a little too young
to be drafted. I do, however, have
vivid memories of seeing the news
reports on TV every night. They
became a kind of soundtrack or
background noise for our lives.
By the time I was grown I became
taken with the question of how the
US got into this very terrible, very
divisive, very costly endeavour. So
I began to read everything I could
about the war; its background, its
major events and players, its impact
on society and future foreign policy.
I watched all the documentaries I
could and many of the war movies.
So you can imagine how motivated
I was when the opportunity came to
visit this country. With my friend, we
went to the Cu Chi Tunnels, where
the Vietnamese dug a system of
bunkers, living quarters, hospitals,
and workshops to avoid the heavy
US firepower raining down from the
skies. We went out to the Mekong
Delta where so much living and
dying took place.
But I think it was the War Remnants
Museum that had the biggest impact
on me. There, for the first time, I

began to view this war through the
eyes of the Vietnamese themselves.
Of course, no ones perspective is
free of bias, and they say that the
winners of wars get to write the
history. Much of this was very hard
to see.
Currently the museum is holding
a major photographic exposition
on the long term effects of Agent
Orange and other chemicals used
by the US. Decades after the guns
have gone silent and the American
Aggressors have departed, lives
are still being impacted. Even still,
the occasional land mine triggers
destruction. I met a man who lost
both hands up to his elbows when
he encountered a mine seven years
after the war ended. But it is the
deformities and generational health
problems due to Agent Orange that
were the most horrifying to observe
(some of these families were on
hand at the museum the day we
were there).
All of this drove home to me one passage from the Bible, from Revelation
21:4,5: He will wipe away every tear
from their eyes, and earth shall be no
more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for
the former things have passed away.
And he who was seated on the
throne said, Behold, I am making all
things new.

Dealing with domestic violence
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
For almost four years Wanda McGinnis has filled a special
role in Strathmore, helping those affected by domestic
violence. McGinnis is the Domestic Violence Coordinator for
Strathmore.
Karen Pease, executive director for the Community Crisis
Society, said it began when community agencies gathered
together and invited Homefronts executive director, Kevin
McNichol, to talk about the community domestic response
that occurs in Calgary.
At that time, a new provincial funding initiative, the Safe
Communities Grant, was available for a three year pilot
project. We were one of the fortunate recipients of the
grant. It took innovation of the local agencies, in particular
the RCMP who agreed to have a social worker enter their
work space and work alongside them, as well as the crown
prosecutor and children services, said Pease.
It has become a model for other rural communities in
the province. It shows what a difference a group of service
providers can make to the families they work with when
they collaborate in a different way.
One of the biggest challenges is being a social worker in
a police environment because the working relationship is
based on trust and it can be tough being the outsider coming
in, said McGinnis.
We have to believe we are working toward the same goal,
which is to stop domestic violence in our community. Our
mandates have us approaching it from different perspectives.
Although the work we do is very different, we are both
working toward the same end result. Having strong working
relationships is very important. Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly was
instrumental in helping with that.
There are similar programs in other communities around
Alberta, including Calgary, Red Deer, Airdrie, St. Paul and
Lac La Biche.
The program is all about collaboration and partnership, and
the key partners are the RCMP, the Community Crisis Society,
Childrens Services, probation, the crown prosecutors office,
defense and then the victim and offender.
Where McGinnis comes in is she touches base with

everybody involved with that family, looking at
what some of the key concerns are, planning
around risk, and safety planning. Shell discuss
community resources and supports so that once
the criminal process is done the family is stronger
because of who they have been able to access.
One of the things we want to do is involve the
victim in the whole court process, so that their
voice is heard, and their planning is heard. If
they intend on reconciling with their partner after
charges, we want to be able to make sure that
happens safely, said McGinnis.
She said the goal is to make sure the victim is
engaged in the whole process, so that if she or
he wants to reconcile, they can make sure its
happening safely.
Theyre really clear that Im not a police officer,
that Im a social worker and there to help. So I
generally get a different kind of information
than what the police are getting anyway, said
McGinnis. So if she is nervous, or if things are
starting to feel like they once did, shes pretty
candid with me.
When making a report for the crown and the
courts, there are three parts to the recommendations
that she makes. First she highlights what the risk
factors are, based on what victim is identifying,
and what the offender is identifying, and any
other ones the community might have highlighted.
For example, if there are particular concerns the
constable might have had or the community had.
The second part is what does the victim want? So
if she never wants to see him again then McGinnis
will make that very clear to the crown.
Im always kind of clear that when the dust
settles it really truly is going to be he and she
left, with their children, so if she is telling me
right from the beginning she wants to reconcile
with him, then I have to feel confident she knows
what she needs and all I can do for her is make
sure she is educated, she is supported and that
she understands the risk, and she understands the
impact on her children, said McGinnis.
If she does want to see him again, then that too
is also made clear to the crown.
The third is whether there are any particular
concerns by any agency involved, for example
Childrens Services, if they feel there are real
protection concerns around this family reuniting
then that is something she also definitely lets the
crown know.
The nature and number of high-risk files are
getting worse and domestic violence is seen in all
communities.
One thing I would feel confident saying is
that, we are seeing a different level of risk. I have
worked in domestic violence my entire career and
I would say that the number of high-risk families
is increasing, said McGinnis.
Wanda
McGinnis
has had the unique
role of domestic violence coordinator for
the Strathmore and
Wheatland area for
almost four years. The
RCMP is just one of
the many organizations she partners with
in the role. Staff Sgt.
Kevin Reilly and Wanda McGinnis.
Shannon LeClair Photo
She doesnt just work with the victim, she also
works with the offender and tries to help the
family from every end.
Most of them want to be a better person, a
better husband, a better dad, and theyre willing
to do just about anything. I do the same kinds
of things with them, talk to them about risk and
about what can happen, about the effects on their
children, and about giving them new tools, said
McGinnis.
So how do I give you new ways to respond and
communicate with your family so that theyre not
afraid of you, so theyre not afraid of what might
happen.
Often in her experience offenders are really
willing to do that. If there are drug, alcohol
or mental health issues then it can be more
complicated, but even people with multilevel
problems are still willing to take a good look at
themselves.
When studying to become a social worker
McGinnis remembers saying she never wanted to
work in domestic violence. By happenstance, she
knew Pease who told asked McGinnis to come
and work at the shelter where it was flexible
hours and could work with having a family.
I went and did it, and its my passion. I just
believe theres hope, and I believe that if families
know theres a better way then anything is
possible, said McGinnis.
I think often what happens is we work with
families who this is all they know, they came
from homes where there was domestic violence
it becomes their normal, they seek out the people
that bring out the worst in them and I think that
with better tools they can actually bring out more
positives in each other.
So my real motivation is that their kids can
learn that there is a different way.
Current funding is through the provincial Civil
Forfeiture Fund. McGinnis hopes that the value of
the program is seen outside of the people working
directly with the victims, and that it becomes a
permanent fixture in the community, without
needing a tragedy to occur to make that happen.
The Beatles in Strathmore 2015
YOUR AD COULD
BE HERE!
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter
It may still be months away, but the 55 Plus
Summer Games organizers are pleased to
announce that they are bringing Britains Finest,
a Beatles tribute band, to Strathmore on June 20,
2015.
We were looking for a top notch band for the
games and their name came up. After seeing them
on YouTube we were sold. They are awesome,
said Linda Storkson, who is a volunteer and
fundraising committee member for the 55 Plus
Summer Games coming in July 2015.
Tickets will be on sale for $35 each, and
are expected to sell out quickly. The ticket
release date has not yet been determined, but
anyone interested is told to keep an eye on the
2015strathmoregames.ca website.
The 55 Plus Games committee are not the
only ones excited for the show. Robert Bielma,
speaking on behalf of the band, said theyre happy
to be breaking into the Canadian market.
This will be the first time that we actually break
into the Canadian market, so were hoping that
we can add more dates while were in Canada and
finally see our neighbours up north, said Bielma.
The band is made up of Tyson Kelley, who
portrays John Lennon, Benjiman Chadwick as
Paul McCartney, Bielma as George Harrison, and
Luis Renteria as Ringo Starr.
All of us are pretty much huge Beatle fans, we
all love the Beatles, each of us maybe came in
later than others, said Bielma. A lot of people
say we look and sound like the Beatles.
The show promises to be a great for both new
and long-time Beatles fans.
The way we start off is as the Beatles arrive on
the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, said Bielma.
They play a lot of the hits throughout the show,
which they have split into three acts. The boys
will come out in their black suits and sing some
of the songs from the show, from the 1963 to
1966 era. Following the first intermission they
come out in their Sgt. Pepper costumes, playing
the first couple songs off that album, and some
others from that time frame. John Lennon (Kelley)
will do a solo, usually Strawberry Fields, and Paul
McCartney (Chadwick) performs Blackbird solo
before the final set comes on stage. The last set
consists of songs from the Abbey Road and Let it
Be albums.
Bielma said Britains Finest looks like the
Beatles, sounds like the Beatles, and they try to
keep their performances true to how the Beatles
themselves would perform the songs.

Harper Government announces tax relief measures for families
FROM THE OFFICE OF
KEVIN SORENSON
The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of State (Finance)
and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the announcement of the Harper Governments tax relief measures for
families.
All families with children will
benefit from the new measures
introduced by our government.
The average tax relief and benefits for these families will be
$1,140 in 2015, said Sorenson.
Two-thirds of the benefits flow
to low-and-middle income families right here in our riding of
Crowfoot.
These tax relief measures include:
The Family Tax Cut Up to
$2,000 for couples with children
under the age of 18, effective for
the 2014 tax year. The proposed
Family Tax Cut will take the form
of a federal non-refundable tax
credit that will allow the higherincome spouse to transfer up to
$50,000 of taxable income to a
spouse in a lower income tax
bracket, up to a maximum benefit of $2,000.
This measure is estimated to
reduce federal tax revenues by
approximately $2.4 billion in
2014-15 and $1.9 billion in 201516. More than 1.7 million fami-
lies are expected to benefit. This
proposal will not affect provincial or territorial tax revenues.
Universal Child Care Benefit In 2006, the government
introduced the Universal Child
Care Benefit (UCCB), which provides all families with $100 per
month for each child under the
age of six. The UCCB currently
provides direct federal support
to approximately 1.7 million
families with young children.
The Government is proposing
to enhance the UCCB by providing $160 per month. In a year,
parents will receive up to $1,920
per year for each child under
the age of six. Our government
is also introducing a new benefit
of up to $720 per year for children age six through 17.
These enhanced payments will
take effect as of January 2015
and will begin to be reflected in
monthly payments to recipients
in July 2015. This measure is expected to cost the federal government approximately $1.1 billion in 2014-15 and $4.4 billion
in 2015-16. Approximately four
million families are expected
to benefit. The enhanced UCCB
will replace the existing Child
Tax Credit for the 2015 and subsequent taxation years. The enhanced UCCB combined with
the repeal of the Child Tax Credit is expected to cost the federal
government approximately $700
million in 2014-15 and $2.6 billion in 2015-16.
Child Care Expense Deduction The Child Care Expense
Deduction (CCED) allows child
care expenses incurred to earn
employment or business income,
pursue education or perform
research, to be deducted from
income for tax purposes. Generally, only the lower-income
spouse can claim the CCED. To
better reflect the cost of child
care expenses, our government
will increase the dollar limits
of the CCED by $1,000 including children who are eligible for
the Disability Tax Credit. These
changes will apply for the 2015
and subsequent taxation years,
and will reduce federal revenues by an estimated $15 million in 2014-15 and $65 million
in 2015-16. More than 200,000
families are expected to benefit.
Doubling the Childrens Fitness Tax Credit Our government will double the Childrens
Fitness Tax Credit (CFTC) and
make it refundable to further
help families making the choice
to put their children in fitness
activities. Making the tax credit refundable will ensure that
lower-income families benefit
from this measure. Parents will
be able to take advantage of
the new $1,000 maximum limit
in the spring of 2015 when
they file their tax returns
for 2014. The credit will be
made refundable as of the
2015 tax year, increasing
benefits to low-income families claiming it for that year
and subsequent years.
Together, the proposed enhancements are expected to
cost the federal government
approximately $25 million in
2014-15, and $35 million annually thereafter. When fully
implemented, the proposed
enhancements will deliver
additional tax relief to about
850,000 families.
Minister Sorenson concludes, as our Conservative
Government proceeds to
eliminate the federal governments annual budgetary
deficit in 2015, I am pleased
that Canadian families are
the first to realize the benefits of a balanced federal
budget. These measures are
further components of our
package of efforts to leave
more money in the pockets
of Canadians.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Recycle debate
To the Editor
(RE: Langdon recycling program, Oct. 31 issue,
Page 5, Strathmore Times)
Mr. Ashdown is incorrect in some of his assumptions, to wit:
1.) The program is not cheaper for residents, in fact
the program costs my family approximately $10 more
per month.
2.) There are many items which must still be taken
to the waste transfer site in Langdon thus the intimation that residents do not now have to go to the facility is incorrect my wife and I used to go there on a
weekly basis we still do.
3.) The assumption that 50 per cent of the contents
of the garbage bags was recyclable is not necessarily
true in our case it is totally untrue. Occasionally
we had two bags of garbage. It is doubtful if two full
bags of garbage will fit in the toy bins provided. Fur-
ther, there was a private contractor who did collect
recyclables he is now out of business thanks to the
foresight of the RVC council.
4.) Mr. Ashdown thinks that it is neat that all recyclables are now dumped in the same container at his
house. When we visited the transfer site in the past
we sorted our recyclables now some one else does it
and presumably not out of an altruistic nature.
All in all it is just another compulsory government
initiative thrust upon us long suffering taxpayers by
an administration and council who really dont care
just ask councilor Habberfield - as she relates everything to cups of Starbucks, which my wife and I
cannot afford.
Thank you,
Phillip Grimison,
Langdon
Teaching the younger generation
To the Editor
I belong to Operation Legacy, which is made up of
members and graduates of the War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and is dedicated to teaching the younger generation about Canadas military
heritage.
Remembrance Day is special to me and to Champs
across the country as the War Amps was started by
veterans who returned from the First World War missing limbs. They were there to support each other and
then passed on their knowledge to amputee veterans
returning from the Second World War. They then created the CHAMP Program to assist young amputees
like me.
On Nov. 11, I will be thinking about all the sacrifices that men and women have made and continue
to make for this country. It is a day to be thankful for
their service and ensure what many had to suffer and
endure does not happen again. Through Operation
Legacy, I have given presentations to young people to
spread the message of remembrance.
I feel it is my duty to carry on the torch of remembrance and help ensure the sacrifices of those who
served are never forgotten.

Every Set of Lost Keys Has a Story

McBride Career Group, in
partnership with Siksika Employment and Training Services
(SETS), held a successful Career
& Employment Expo on Oct.
29 at the Siksika Resources and
Development Limited Building
(SRDL).
Val Alce, McBrides project
coordinator for the Expo, was
happy with the turnout, both
for the participants and the
vendors.
We have been developing
this event full time since Sept.
15, with a lot of phone calls
and man power to make this
event successful, said Alce.
We exceeded our expectations
for both the number of vendors
who participated, as well as for

the number of clients who attended.
Alce was contracted for this
project, which was funded by
Alberta Human Services/Alberta Works. Alce then worked
with a steering committee that
included personal support
workers and staff of SETS, Carlon Big Snake (Business Industry Liason), Jill Old Woman
(Administrative Assistant) and
Jenny Black Rider (SETS Staff)
and said it was a great team effort on everyones behalf.
Every Friday since September, Alce went out to Siksika
to help get resumes together,
practice interview skills, run
participants through mock interviews.
Alce was pleased that they
had full access to the Resource
room to take full advantage of
the computers.
Carlon Big Snake was also
commended the partnership
and said that members had
been working on the event in
its earliest stages since May of
2014, preparing the groundwork and awaiting approval for
the project.
Alfred Many Heads, the
Training Coordinator found the
clients who then were referred
to me. Then with the staff, I
would train the clients to sell
themselves, said Big Snake.
He was then able to redirect
the participants toward particular employers according to
their skills.
Alce says that after the event
there was a lot of positive feedback, from the vendors as well
as the 125 Siksika members
who registered.

Where do we go from here
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor
Wheatland Business Women closed
one door and opened another as a final
service to the community, by holding a
town hall meeting at the Days Inn on
Oct. 21.
Wheatland Business Women was
formed to talk about business, as a way
to get together with one another and
do various things, said Darlis Collinge,
facilitator for the meeting. When
they made a decision to dissolve, we
thought this could be a last gift to the
community. We recognized perhaps
there is a new need in the community,
something that current business people or new business people could develop in the community to grow their
businesses.
The question considered by about
fifteen members of the attendees was
whether there was actually a need for a
business group in the community, what
those needs would look like, if there
were any gaps or existing agencies that
could meet needs and possible suggestions as to how they can be filled.
What is done here tonight will need
to go further and someone will need
to step up to move that forward, said
Collinge.
The group was divided on whether
a new group was needed, or if current
services could provide clearer information to business owners what they offered.
A strong business community is a
thermometer for community health,
said Jill Crossland, the new president
for the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce. Everyone agreed a
vibrant Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce with a good reputation is important in a community, but a
few members said a new group could
develop and help the Chamber to overcome some of the past issues.
Some of the suggestions about possible needs that could be met were:
networking opportunities, marketing
information, training and opportunities, mentorships such as the Masterminds programs, customer attraction
and retention programs, a collaborative cooperative partnership amongst
organizations based on trust, teamwork and integrity, higher than entry
level educational opportunities offered
on-line or in person, access to qualified
shared staff, equipment, facilities and
expertise, increase community awareness and shared information such as
available commercial space within the
business community, financial management, start-up assistance and support,
and communication skills development. Full details and summaries of the
meeting were sent to those attending
the meeting.
To continue, a new group would
need to fundraise $250-$400 to hold
a second meeting. A second meeting
would identify and clarify steps for future development of a group and determine if they would be appropriate for
the Strathmore and District Chamber
of Commerce to address some of the
needs, or list other entities that could
provide for priority issues.
The Community Futures Wild Rose
and the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce will be asked for assistance in setting up another meeting
and whether they could provide a facilitator for that meeting. For complete
brainstorming ideas and summaries of
the meeting,

Bucket list wish
529,900
Ninety six year old Eldon Wray, a resident of Meadowlark Senior Care Home
in Strathmore, was at the reins again after a decades long break. Eldon grew
up in Irricana back in a time when horse and wagon was the only transportation available to move your goods. Eldon never forgot this time and recently
added driving a team of horses to his bucket list. The folks at the Rocking
R Guest Ranch heard about Eldons wish and made it come true. On Oct.
31 Eldon was invited to the Rocking R where he was given command of a
horse team and wagon which he put to good use by taking some of his fellow residents for a ride around the ranch.

Your hometown dealer
F
or nearly four decades,
Strathmore Motor Products has been a vital part
of the local community.
Under the constant ownership of Hal Lust, SMP has been
family owned and family operated and has given thousands
of dollars back into the community.
According to general manager Clarence Kooistra, the Number 1 goal of the dealership has
been to serve their Strathmore
and area customers.
Weve been here for over 35
years and we still have customers that buy from us today that
purchased vehicles from us 35
years ago, said Kooistra. We
take tremendous pride in that.
That very special relationship
between the business and the
community helped SMP create
their motto of Your Hometown
Dealer.
From new and pre-owned vehicles to parts and service, the
dealership has become a onestop shop for all your automotive needs.
We just want the first opportunity to show you how good
we are, said SMPs sales manager Glenn Alexander. This is
a very easy environment to be
in. We listen and act on your
wants and needs, respecting
at all times the guidelines you
give us.
With well over 100 years of
sales experience, SMP has the
extensive knowledge regarding any new GMC, Chevrolet or
Buick automobiles.
However, it does not limit
them to only selling those products. With their experience in
used vehicles, SMP has the resources to find the right vehicle
for any client.
We can bring in Fords,
Dodges, or imports any make
or model, we have the buying
power and the ability to go and
get that for you without our
customers having to and search
around said Alexander. We
also have over 100 pre-owned
vehicles on the lot at all times.
General Motors continues its
strong performance in the J.D.
Power Initial Quality Study, taking more initial quality awards
than any other automaker
for the second year in a row.
GM also has the most models
ranked in the top three in their
respective segments.
GM swept the Large SUV segment with Chevrolet Suburban
and GMC Yukon both ranking
highest in a tie along with the
Chevrolet Tahoe. In addition to
the Large SUV segment sweep,
two models have now ranked
highest in their segments for
two years in a row: the Chevrolet Silverado HD and Buick
Encore.
Since 2009, GM changed the
process and went with more
technological-based, economical vehicles, said Alexander.
Your super-connected world
is now inside your car, thanks
to OnStar with 4G LTE. Using
the built in Wi-Fi hotspot, you
can connect up to seven devices
at once. So fire up your tablets,
laptops, and other mobile devices, and bring entertainment
along for the ride by streaming
your favourite movies, playlists,
blogs and more while on the
go. This new service is available
on select 2015 models, which
are now on the lot at SMP.
The dealership also prides
itself on giving back to the local community. By purchasing
from SMP and buying local, the
dealership gives back to the
community. Proceeds from every sale helps SMP give back
to various organizations in and
around Strathmore.
There is an expectation from
our community for (businesses)
to support local charities and
initiatives, said Alexander.
In addition to various charities, the dealership has sponsored over 30 different fundraising causes this year alone.
One particular cause, in time
for the Christmas season, is being a designated drop-off location for the Wheatland County
Food Bank. Not only with the
dealership collect food, but
they host a fill a truck box toy
drive, beginning early next
month.
If you are in the market for
a new or used vehicle, or even
just thinking about it, visit their
website (www.strathmoremotors.com) or stop by Strathmore
Motor Products and let one of
their trained professionals assist you in the process.

A SALUTE TO OUR HEROES:
OUR VETERANS
On Remembrance Day, we pause to reflect on the courage,
dedication and loyalty of our nations military veterans.
Throughout history, their hard work and sacrifice have kept
us safe and protected our freedom. We owe them a debt of
gratitude that can never be repaid, and we salute them for
their service. To all of the brave men and women who have
sacrificed to put their country first, we thank you.
Poppies and posters
SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor
As Canadian war planes fly through the skies in
Iraq and 600 Canadian air force personnel work with
coalition forces in Operation Impact, Canadians will
take their eyes from the sky to their lapels. They
will place a poppy in remembrance of past sacrifices
made by veterans in the Great Wars, and the many
Canadian veterans killed or injured in peacekeeping
action around the world.
Don Good, legion coordinator for the poppy campaign, said the displays are up but poppies didnt go
on sale until Oct. 31, with the exception of poppies
released so that visitors to the war memorial in Ottawa could place pins on the memorial, to honour
the recently deceased Corporal Nathan Cirillo.
French citizen Madame Guerin made the first
hand-made poppies in 1920 and sold them to support destitute children in war-torn areas. The Great
War Veterans Association (the predecessor of The
Royal Canadian Legion) officially adopted the poppy
as its Flower of Remembrance in July 1921. Their
first hand-made blooms were sold in November
1921, with proceeds benefiting wounded veterans.
The money still goes to support for veterans and local charities 93 years later.
Strathmores goal is to raise funds for a specialized
acute care mattress that costs $8300. Last year the
Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Strathmore received
$4800 and a rehabilitation machine costing $11,000
was purchased for the hospital. As of 2013, Strathmore Legion #10 raised $47,919 64, which is a far
cry from the $4000 generated in 1996 when Good
started with the program.
Pins can be purchased at businesses around town
or at the Legion itself. While many people keep
their poppy and wear it year-to-year, there are rules
where and how the poppy should be worn and used.

donate every year to continue the good work.
The legion also sells commemorative wreaths costing between $20-$60. Anyone is allowed to place
commemorative wreaths at the monuments or in
services.
Good is starting to focus on getting youth involved.
Good says many young people are helping distribute
the boxes.
A fun project for youth sponsored by the Legion is
the poster contest and literary contest.
The poster contest is divided into two divisions,
colour and black-and-white and the literary contest
is divided into essay and poem divisions. In Strathmore, the awards range between $25 and $35, but
as the winners are submitted for successive zones,
awards increase all the way up to $1000 at the national level. All the schools in Strathmore will be
submitting the first and second winning posters for
display at the library on Nov. 18 for public viewing. For more information see www.legion.ca/youth/

Lighting the night for Remembrance Day
SHARON MCLEAY

Carselands Steven and
Grace Smith and their foster
children have kept a unique
Nov. 11 tradition for a number of years. They decorate
their Christmas tree early
and turn the lights on Remembrance Day, to commemorate the sacrifice men
and women paid for our
freedom.
For years I have put my
Christmas tree up on Nov.
11. I do it because I am
grateful to be in a country
that allows us the freedom
to put up a Christmas tree.
For me, it represents our
Christian beliefs and family beliefs, said Grace, who
throws a little glitter because she enjoys it.
She said remembrance
could be combined with
any faith. She noticed in
Northeast Calgary, a Hindu
Diwali festival had linked
their firework display to incorporate a Remembrance
Day commemoration. Hindu believers celebrate Diwali festival of light to bring
light to the darkness and
bring peace and kindness
into the world. Stephen said
that many of our new Ca-
nadians come from the Indian subcontinent and their
family members might have
also fought for the allies in
the First and Second World
Wars. Steven said Canada,
culturally, has shifted a lot
since wartime.
Our religions have the
potential to divide us, but
our nation has the capacity
to unite us in a common belief. What is sacred is not for
sale. For Canadians, what is
sacred is a belief in its people, said Steven.
The Smith family has had
many members that served
in military. Graces grandfather served in WWI. Her
aunt and uncle fought in
WWII. Stevenss father was
a peacekeeper in Egypt and
Cyprus and Steven was born
on an army base in Germany and is a self- taught historian.
Steven said he has noticed many more Canadians
have a strong connection
and sense of respect for Remembrance Day. He said it
was sad, however, as Canadians have a deep respect
but they dont know their
own history.
We have numerous soldiers from WWI and WWII

ria Cross, which is only received for
acts of extreme valour. Almost half of
those who received it lost their lives,
said Steven. These are Canadians.
The fact is they didnt do it for honour. They did it out of a sense of love
for the men they were with. They believed in what they were fighting for.
People can make all the claims they
want for the justification for WWI and
WII, but these men were not forced to
fight. They went because they had a
deep belief in the sacredness of what
they were fighting for.
He said the men alive that received
the Victoria Cross didnt do it for glory, but often contribute their longevity
to those who have fallen and say it
could have been given to anyone of
their troop members.
Steven said there is a lack of response from government, other than
the official part of it, and business
isnt involved because they cannot
make money off Remembrance Day.
Steven said his stepfather was a soldier who landed on Juno beach. His
stepfather sold poppies, and there
are other who put in a great number
of hours sitting in malls and stores
selling poppies. Stevens stepfather
stepped up because he wanted people not to forget.
It comes down to their beliefs,
said Grace. Many people already
have their lights up, if people can just
flick a switch and put on your lights.
Bring some light into the world and
do it to show a thank you, to those
who have passed serving this country
and those who are still here.
Grace mentioned taking a holiday
to Nova Scotia where they watched
Canadian navy ships leave the harbour to take relief supplies to Florida
after hurricane Katrina.
All the men went to the back of
the boat I was on to salute them as
they left. It wasnt just them. All the
fireboats came out and were spraying
water everywhere. Helicopters were
flying overhead. Docks had waving
people on them. Horns were honking.
Bagpipes were out from both Ontario to here, we dont have the opportunity to see these kind of send
offs, said Grace.
The Smiths felt more respect should
be given to men and women fighting
under the Canadian flag.
Grace hopes lighting the night to
show respect for our fighting men and
women will catch on, but any tradition that honours the slogan Lest We
Forget will help to carry the message
to the next generation.

Ex-soldier gives insight into Kandahar
SHARON MCLEAY

Kevin Giroux served over 15 years in
Canadas armed forces and he now resides in Strathmore. Kevin was raised
in Strathmore, and his extended family are scattered throughout Strathmore
and the surrounding farm district. Giroux was taught traditional western
values, including contributing to the
community and showing respect to veterans on Remembrance Day.
I remember George Freeman coming to school to talk to us, about fighting in WWII, said Giroux. He made a
big impression on me.
Giroux said he received a package
in Afghanistan and it touched him that
people from the Strathmore Legion had
sent cards and signatures for his wellbeing. Amongst them was a comment
from George Freeman (the last WWII
veteran in Strathmore) to keep his head
down and return home safe.
It meant so much because he knew,
he had been there, said Giroux.
Giroux served two tours in Afghanistan, one in Kabul in 2003-2004 and
Kandahar in 2006-2007.
He was trained as an electrical-mechanical-optical technician in the Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. He
was trained to drive, crew command,
live and fight in an armoured car maintenance vehicle. He said that as a maintainer, they were trained to repair things
and fight. Giroux was armed with grenades and used a C7 assault rifle and a
C9 machine gun.
We were called Maintainers because
we fixed all kinds of stuff, said Giroux.
On Girouxs first tour, three soldiers
were killed by suicide bombers. One
was his friend Cpl. Jamie Murphy, who
was killed in action Jan. 27, 2004. His
cousin Dale Newbury introduced Giroux to his wife Abbie, so it hit close to
home.
People back home here dont know
what we were involved in. It was a
shooting match big time, said Giroux.
It is not peacemaking, or peacekeeping, it is war, said Giroux.
In Kandahar, on his second tour, he
was involved in Operation Medusa, facing the largest stronghold for the Taliban in an area called the Panjwaii that
was close to the Pakistan border. Adam
Day for Legion Magazine said Operation Medusa was intended to disperse
or destroy the hundreds, if not thousands, of insurgents that had gathered
about 20 km southwest of Kandahar
city. It was one of the biggest combat
operations since Korea, and half of the
Canadians who died in Afghanistan
were killed in this region.
Giroux said they were fighting against
seasoned fighters. A lot of the enemy
had fought previously in Chechen wars
and they were using cold war tactics.
Kandahar would have fallen, during
Operation Medusa, if we hadnt have
fought them. said Giroux.
We meant an international effort by
Canadian, Americans, Aussies and Kiwis armed forces and Afghan Army and
police personnel.
On Sept 3rd 2006, four Canadians

were lost, and the next day one died
with approximately 35 wounded from
friendly fire.
You train and train to perform your
job in combat situations and then you
have to step up to the plate. Combat
arms soldiers were very supportive and
told me it was good to have me there,
said Giroux.
The sights of killing begin to take its
toll. He began to change. Some of his
values changed. He came in wanting to
help, but ended up not trusting or caring about the population.
He said one 27-year-old local that
worked with them in their forward operating base looked about 57, because
it was a hard-scrabble life. Giroux said
the man had a death warrant on his
head from the Taliban and Al-Qaeda,
but the main reason he was there was
he was being paid and that feed his
family.
I didnt know if he would be in our
camp from one day to the next because
of the price on his head by the Taliban,
said Giroux.
Giroux said the Taliban would stop
at nothing to attack them. Outside the
wire of the Kandahar airfield there was
fighting almost every day. They never
knew when an incendiary explosive device or a vehicle borne improvised explosive device or suicide bomber would
be encountered.
You had to accept that today I am
going to die, otherwise you cant functionfearing that rocket propelled grenades or bombs would explode, said
Giroux. Its like driving down 16th Ave
in Calgary and random vehicles drive
at you and explode, trying to kill you.
It was a lottery. Our convoys were getting hit daily and it took a toll on your
nerves, to say the least.
Giroux sustained a back injury in a
suicide-bombing incident and came
home with symptoms of post-traumatic
stress disorder.
An enemy with a bomb strapped to
his motorcycle rammed the vehicle
behind the one Giroux was riding in.
The explosion drove Girouxs head into
the roof of the armoured vehicle and
crunched his spine. He still remembers
the event like it was 15 minutes ago.
Giroux said he can still see the sweat
trickling down the face of the rider before he hit.
Giroux related how he and his platoon spent Nov. 11, 2006 in a bunker in
FOB Costall.
It was a platoon of us...9 platoon

Regiment)and my self and Master Corperal Dan Collins. We had the lights

very low (because of the no white light
condition imposed on us). The platoon
commander read In Flanders Field
and we just sat quietly, maybe 12 of
us, because some of the other soldiers
were on watch, and nobody said a word
after. It was very poignant and maybe
lasted about 15 minutes. No poppies,
no bagpipes, just a group of us, reflecting on our friends who were killed and
wounded. Sixteen days later, we gathered in the same spot for the news that
our RSM, CWO Bob Girouard & his
driver and a good friend of mine, Cpl
Albert Storm were killed in a suicide
van attack. And they were killed in a
spot that we were going to be driving
through....4 days later,said Giroux.
Giroux said he heard the Canadian
flag at the base in Petawawa had been
at half mast for 77 days, during his tour
in Afghanistan.
His wife Abbie would like to see more
recognition for todays troops. Kevin
said WWI-WWII veterans were definitely tougher than troops today and
deserve all the recognition that they
are given, but he also thinks it is time
to bring the stories and the sacrifice of
subsequent service into the schools and
services in Canada.
Kevin Giroux would like to thank
friends and family and those at the legion and elsewhere that supported him
while he served. He would like people
to remember those mentioned in this
article and who served or died in Afghanistan and other Canadian operations. Jason Fraser (living) a Royal Dragoon, who fought along side Giroux for
two tours. They grew up together. Frasers parents used to own Strathmore
Glass. Fraser is currently a Kansas highway patrolman and his wife serves in
the United States army. Another in the
area that fought in Afghanistan is Mike
Cantley (living), who is a sergeant in the
reserves and works as an ironworker in
Calgary. Dan Collins (deceased), a vehicle tech who served along side Giroux
in the forward operating base (FOB)
near Pakistan. The FOB was named after Pte. Robert Costall (deceased).
Let us always be grateful to those who
serve to protect our freedom. Let us not
forget the final, ultimate price that many
paid. We will remember the sacrifices.

2014 THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR:
World War 1 was known as the war to end all wars,
and, sadly, how wrong they were. It was an awful war:
dirty, hot, cold, wet, muddy. From 1914 to 1918 our men
fought in the trenches of Europe, in the air and on the
seas, for peace, freedom and their country. Canadas
entry into the war was unquestioned and from coast to
coast it was almost a unanimous decision to support
the Motherland so when Britain was at war in 1914,
so was Canada. Canadians fought bravely throughout
the war, with major involvements in Neuve Chapelle
(March 1915), the Second Battle of Ypres (April 1915),
the Battle of the Somme (July 1916), Vimy Ridge (April
1917), Passchendaele (October 1915), and the 100 Days
Offensive (August 4 to November 11, 1918). 619,636
men and women participated in the war by enlisting
as soldiers, chaplains and nurses. Of these, 66,655
gave their lives and another 172,950 were wounded.
Almost one of every ten Canadians who fought in the war
did not return.
2014 THE 70th ANNIVERSARY OF D-DAY, JUNE 6th, 1944,
WORLD WAR II
World War II was no better than World War I, as we
obviously had not learned anything from The War to End
All Wars, which was tantamount to the beginning of
World War II. The largest invasion, known as Operation
Overlord, against Germany, occurred on June 6th,
1944, D-Day. The Canadians, British and Americans
underwent months of special training while at the same
time gathering massive supplies in southern England.
Engineers planned an under-water pipeline to France and
prefabricated harbours were assembled. Ground, sea
and air forces rehearsed extensively to be sure of perfect
timing and cooperation. All three Canadian services
shared in the assault. One of the Seaborne formations
was the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, supported by the
2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade and forming a part of
the British 6th Airborne Division, was the 1st
Canadian Parachute Battalion. The crossing
of the English Channel was made through
lanes that minesweepers of Royal Canadian
Navy helped to clear. Canadian naval guns
helped hammer the enemys beach. The
Royal Canadian Air Force bombed German
batteries. Approximately 14,000 Canadians
landed at Canadas objective, Juno Beach, on the
coast of Normandy. Canada suffered 1,074 casualties, of
which 359 lost their lives.

More Power to Your Knitting, Nell!

More Power to Your Knitting, Nell!,
a one-woman musical play set during
World War II. It will be performed by
Naomi Esau, Nov. 14-16, on Rosebuds
BMO Studio Stage. The show is Esaus
Final Project, culminating her work of
four years at Rosebud School of the
Arts.
More Power is a story about a girl
named Sadie, and shes always wanted
to be a radio star, a singer, Esau says.
She doesnt want to be a factory worker or a teacher or a switchboard operator. She wants to be famous.
Sadie gets a job as Knitting Nell, radio performer, encouraging women to
knit for their troops, but the big problem is that Sadie hates knitting.
I just fell in love with the character, Esau said, about the first time she
saw playwright Melanie Gall perform
the show. (Nell) is ambitious, and she
knows what she wants and she goes
after it.
Esau is confident her audience will
love Nell too.
Theyll be touched by Nell, her en-
ergy and her boldness, Esau said.
Theyll also love that she learns so
much and shes willing to do what she
knows she needs, for herself, and for
the people she loves.
The songs, all written during World
Wars I and II, range from jazz to quick
march to classical to ballad, and share
one topic: knitting.
Some of (the songs) are hilarious
... some of them are really heartfelt.
Theres one song thats all about women gossiping in their knitting club, said
Esau. The idea that something as simple as knitting, thats still done today,
was a key factor in (the war), makes
the story timeless. Women (were) knitting for the war effort, to send to their
loved ones overseas, knitting to send
to people they didnt know ... its womens love, putting (love) into things like
knitting.
She encourages knitters and crocheters to bring their yarn and needles or
hooks, and to knit or crochet during
the performance. Theyll be Nells Knitting Club, she says, and will get a ticket
discount.

Introducing the Dearhearts
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Rosebud-based band The Dearhearts, consisting of Alix Cowman,
Lauren Degraaf and Lauren Hamm will
be having an album release party concert on Nov. 9 in Rosebud.
We met four years ago at the Rosebud School of the Arts. We were all in
musical and loved different kinds of
music, but about six months ago we
decided to get together to be an official
band, said Hamm.
We actually did it kind of backwards, we got two (band members) together to record the CD because Alix
Cowman had won a recording scholarship through the school. So we were
originally going to record these three
songs that were recorded by her in her
scholarship, so we just decided to expand to eight instead.
The album was created by a combination of Cowman writing the songs
and the three of them coming up with
eight original songs, but they had to
raise funds to complete the album.
This (past) summer we needed
some extra money to do some songs
that werent included with my scholarship, so we spent the summer going
around Alberta and playing house concerts for a lot of people that we know,
but also for ones that we dont know,
said Cowman. There were a few songs
that we had learned but for whatever
reason we didnt want them on the
album or they sounded too similar to
other songs. All those concerts helped

ease the selection process.
The house concert really was of benefit in that it made the recording of the
album go smoother.
It was so much easier to do the
house concerts because it was nice to
go into recording and not take as much
time up. It was pretty cool learning
how to sing with these girls as organically as I can and live off of the first
situation, said Degraaf.
The people who are planning to attend the album release concert will be
ble to listen to a mix that was created
on tiny instruments.
Our little tag line that we like to say
is were three girls playing tiny instruments, its a little bluegrass, folk and
jazz, the type of music we like to create
is all those things, said Cowman.
If you are a music expert, you might
pick up on why the trio agree that their
new album is humourous and cheeky.
I think there is a lot of humour in
our album, even in more of the serious songs theres sort of a humorous
energy, said Cowman.
I think thats especially what we
like to bring into our live performances, and people thinking of coming to
our concerts, its just fun.
The concert will be on Nov. 9 at the
Rosebud Mercantile in the Harvest
room at 8 p.m.
Admission is $10 for advance tickets,
$15 at the door and a $5 student ticket price. You can book through their

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings showed their stuff on Nov. 1, as they took it to the High River
Flyers 6-0 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Kings finding rhythm
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The Wheatland Kings are starting to see glimpses of
how dominant a team they can really be after picking
three of a possible four points over the weekend.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes was really thrilled with
the pace that his team played with in the 6-0 win
against High River in Strathmore on Saturday and
even in a 6-5 overtime loss to Okotoks on Sunday
afternoon.
The win versus High River saw the Kings really control the outcome of the game and was a sign of a team
that is playing hard.
We came out and I thought we dictated the pace,
we were moving the puck quickly and all four lines
were rolling. When we did take a penalty, our PK was
excellent going six for six, said Blumes.
When we got chances on the power play, we made
them pay (going) three for six. On the power play
it was a matter of keeping things relatively simple,
making sure we went to the net to cash in on some
rebounds.
The team has been consistently collecting points
lately and starting to go in the right direction.
The last couple of weeks weve been collecting
points and were definitely heading in the right direction. The game against High River, you see we can be
a dangerous team and its not just one line, it makes it
really tough for the opposition to figure which line to
check because weve got some really lethal offensive
players, said Blumes.
The game had some added energy to it as Matt
Thomson had a spirited bout with a High River player
and they were going toe-to-toe the whole fight.
Goal scorers for the Kings were Garrett Watkins
with four goals, Curtis Osborne and Cody Willis adding one each.
Special teams played a key role for a majority of the
game for Kings in Okotoks and for the second game
in a row the special teams was able to capitalize.
I thought our special teams was excellent for the
first 40 minutes. We scored two big power play goals
because we werent trying to pass through guys, we
were looking for the open man, said Blumes. In the
third period, they got a little bit of momentum and we
had a tough time shutting the door but I think you got
to give a lot of credit to our guys, in five minutes we
scored a couple goals to earn a point.
In the overtime loss, it was Watkins, Osborne, Lucas
Jones, Chris Williams and Brett Dumaine that scored.
The Kings will now travel to Three Hills on Friday,
Nov. 7 (8 p.m.), before hosting Medicine Hat on Nov.
8 (8:15 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Bisons offence in high gear
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
The UFA Bisons found their scoring touch en route to picking up four
points and defeating Grande Prairie 4-2
and the Maple Leaf Athletic Club 7-4 on
Nov. 1-2 respectively.
Head coach Dan MacDonald liked
what he saw from his offence in both
games but admits the defensive zone
coverage needs some work.
We got on the scoreboard early,
in fact our first shift in both games
we scored and that helped us create
momentum throughout the game it
seemed, said MacDonald.
Will Conley scored both the early
ore

mes
PLAYER OF THE GAME
goals, so he had a really good weekend for us, he got four points (a goal
and assist each game). Their whole line
with (Trygve) Many Guns and Jordan
McConnell got three goals for us (versus MLAC) and got a couple of goals in
the first game.
Fast puck movement was effective in
the win in Grande Prairie as the Bisons
were able to capitalize off their chances.
I think we were moving the puck
really well, especially in the second period, when we did that we ended up
with four goals and a direct result of us
having the puck most of the time, said
MacDonald.
In the third period we gave up two
goals but it was more to do with us
feeling it would be an easier third period and they didnt give up.
Goals in Grande Prairie came from
Will Conley, Cameron Shorrock, Markus Lavallee and Trygve Many Guns.
In the second game of the weekend
in Edmonton, the goal scoring came
from everywhere in the victory.
We got some good scoring from
everywhere, all the lines were in on it.
The McConnell line got three goals, the
Lavallees line got two goals and two
goals were scored by other lines, said
MacDonald.
Now it seems that the offence is clicking, but the defensive zone needs some
work before the Bisons are effective in
every aspect of their game.
Now we have to shore up our defense - we have to get better in the defensive zone. Thats what were going
to do this week is the defensive end
and really the next two weeks we have
to have size and being better there and
reducing the quality chances, said
MacDonald.
It was Conley, Many Guns, Lavallee,
Jordan McConnell, Austin Cameron,
Zachery Vinnell and Davis Sheldon
who supplied the offence in Edmonton.
The Bisons are back at home next
weekend where they will take on the
Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (5:15 p.m.)
on Nov. 8 and the SSAC Athletics (2
p.m.) on Nov. 9.

Spartan coaching staff
praise teams season
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
On a day where winter came, the Strathmore Spartans could
not get their game on track. The conditions were tough and
they lost 38-0 to the Sylvan Lake Bears in the peewee league
championship game on Nov. 1.
They were also faced with the task of trying to battle a
much bigger, physical team in the Bears.
Despite the one-sided affair, the coaching staff has a positive outlook on what the season was.
Its been a great year I told the boys and I meant every
word. Ive coached pretty much every sport there is for 22
years and I can honestly say that I havent had as much fun
as Ive had this year with this group of coaches and players,
said Travis Ericksteen, Spartans defensive coach. (The players) are very coachable and very keen. Its been a lot of fun,
Im pretty sad that the season is over and not because we lost,
but now everyone is going to go their separate ways.
Ericksteen had nothing but positive compliments about the
teams determination to try new plays and the willingness to
play different positions.
A lot of it is just experience, they just needed a chance to
get to play, he said. They really tried hard. Theyre very positive. If you asked them to try something, they were willing to
try it.
He did admit in the loss, the weather played against what
type of team they were.
Were a quick team and we have a great passing game on
our offence and definitely todays weather took away our two
top advantages, said Ericksteen.
Fourth year line coach Doug Thiessen praised his team for
battling through the game, but knew that they got beat by a
stronger team.
The reality is they gave up a lot of weight and size today
and had no traction. Ive been on teams where as you get
down, kids start getting hurt, there was not one kid who came
off that field hurt unless they were truly hurt, said Thiessen.
First year special teams coach Rob MacLachlin learned a lot
from his other coaches and just watching the players perform
on the field.
The biggest surprise was what a team can do together and
we saw these kids mature and grow drastically throughout the
season. You would not recognize some of these kids if you
met them the first day and saw them today, said MacLachlin.

Ashley Lecavalier completed her hat trick at the start of
the second period and the Ice went on to a 5-2 victory.
Also scoring were Kaylin Larson and Grace Olson. Assists
went to Bre Olson, Jemma Warrack and Elizabeth Praust.
The defence had a very strong game limiting shots on net
and rebound opportunities. They are off to Sherwood Park

The Wheatland Warriors continued
their winning ways as they improved
to 9-3 on the season with a 5-1 victory
over Red Deer on Nov. 2 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Assistant coach Carl Knudsen likes
how the team is piling on the wins but
knows they need to have a full 60-minute effort.
We ended up with the 5-1 win so
we cant be too mad at their efforts.
The first period was pretty slow and
had to kick them in the butt to get
them going, said Knudsen of the local
double-A bantam team. We had a pretty good second and third period but
were starting to play some pretty good
teams. Were going to need to play a
full 60 minutes every night.
The Warriors will need to work hard
every game to get results if they are to
stay atop the standings.
So that is what it comes down to.
Having guys work hard and all the
small things will add up, said Knudsen. When guys are laying the body
it seems like we catch a few turnovers
and thats when things come easier, we
get a lot more scoring opportunities.
Jordan Hansen scored twice, while
Conner Bertamini, Justin Crnkovic and
Mitchell Fawcett also tallied for the
Warriors.
The Warriors will begin a six-game
road trip starting with a pair of games
against Bow Valley on Nov. 7 (7 p.m.)

The Standard Rams girls
volleyball team took part
in the Strathmore High
School tournament held
Oct. 31 - Nov. 1. Coach
Susan Moncks said the
girls show a lot of improvement. The team is
moving on to participate
in regionals set for Nov.
15-16.

JUSTIN SEWARD

The Strathmore High School Spartans
annual home tournament saw a lot of
great teams and competition and the host
teams saw progression in their compete
levels on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
Girls Coach Randy Moncks really liked
what he saw from his team in this tournament; there were some vast improvements.
Our tournament went very well. The
Spartan girls placed third in their pool
and showed that they compete with the
top teams but lack consistency to maintain the pressure on their opposition, said
Moncks.
Moncks is noticing the progression
made by the team to play a longer transition game during sets.
What I was most happy with was our
ability to finally transition the ball more
than once in a long rally and our setters
are finally involving our middle hitters in
that transition, said Moncks.
There are still simple errors that the
team is making that need to be addressed
for the team to win games.
The mental toughness is a goal we need
to continue to work on. We create a lot of
unforced errors, our serving continues to
be an issue, said Moncks.
We give the opposition so many easy
points.
As for the boys team, they were not able
to make it to the playoff round as hosts,
but showed that they could compete.
The tournament was another opportunity for the guys to learn how to compete.
Our setting and middle blocking has
gotten more consistent, which allows our
team to be more competitive, said Coach
Cole Hintz. We need to improve on our attacking and play our system.

The Standard School Rams
girls volleyball program has
shown a lot of determination in
their matches this season and
glimpses of it were visible in the
Strathmore tournament this past
weekend on Oct.31 and Nov. 1.
I would say we started out
with some pretty raw talent,
some kids that are really keen,
wanting to be there, easy to
coach and weve been working
really hard on basic skills that
they didnt have, said Rams
coach Susan Moncks.
So lots of repetition, drills
and lots of things to get them
able to play the game. I would
say in the last two tournaments
weve attended, the kids have really shown what theyre capable
of playing. Even today (Nov.1),
when we played Strathmore, the
kids actually held their own and
looked like a unit.
Moncks believes that her team
does have a strong core group
and if some players commit
themselves, then they are only
going to get better.
There are a few players that
maybe lost a little bit of spirit
because its their first year and
theyre not playing as much,
which will make it hard for next
year, if they decide to quit. The
only way you can build a program is to keep kids coming
back, said Moncks.
She has also admired some of
the leadership qualities from her
older players that have been on
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN
THE SANTA CLAUS PARADE
THIS Y EAR?
the team for a while.
Ive got a good core group
of kids that are really enthused
about being there and learning
the game and wanting to get better and I have three Grade 12s
who have been with me since
Grade 9. Their skills and leadership have a brought the team a
long way and theres a lot of kids
really looking up to them, said
Moncks.
I have a Grade 10 setter that
didnt do a lot of setting last year,
a taller girl who has great potential and is starting to really get
into a groove setting and I think
if she continues to play in the
next two years, youre going to
see some outstanding play.
Some of the players on the
team have played other sports
and that has helped the Rams
along immensely in each set,
with knowing whats happening
from set to set.
I see that from our own kids
playing other team sports, being
able to see whats coming next
is so much a part of volleyball,
said Moncks.
The Rams noticeably need to
work on being more communicative on the court as some points
are lost as a result of non-communication.
Thats something we have to
work on, we dont do a lot of
talking and were a pretty quiet
bunch, said Moncks.
After not qualifying for the
playoff round in the SHS tournament, the team is preparing for
the regionals, which will take
place on Nov. 15-16.

BROWN, William (Bill)
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my
beloved husband, Bill, on October 30, 2014. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his
wife, Linda, of thirty-seven years; daughter Robyn (Dale) Barnett; son Cameron and friend Lana; daughter Kerry and her friend Gerry; five grandchildren,
Tate, Cohen, Makaela, and Reeve Barnett and Hayden Brown; sisters Michael
and Leah; brothers Roger and Peter; and sisters-in-law Jackie (Dan) McDonald, Shirley (Veston) Granberg, Marlene (John) Scott, and Val (Todd) Valkenburg. Bills greatest joy in life was being surrounded by family, especially his
grandchildren. Bill was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 5, 1952. He
graduated from Brentwood College in 1970 and Lethbridge Community College with a diploma in business and computer programming with majors and
minors in accounting and marketing. Bill spent time in the radio industry as an
announcer, in sales, management, and as the CEO and President of Southern
Alberta Broadcasting. He had also owned a racing stable, trucking company,
and curbing company. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold Brown of
Lethbridge in October, 1974 and Delores Brown, also of Lethbridge, in October
2006. Bills other passion in life was cooking for family and friends. Bill and
Linda looked forward to spending their winters in Huatulco, Mexico where
he also leaves behind many friends. Bills family is extremely grateful to the
nurses and doctors in the ICU at the Foothills Hospital for the excellent care
given to him. Bill passed away due to a ruptured aorta. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made directly to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance (Box 570 1441

June 25, 1923 Jerrig, Denmark
November 1, 2014 Strathmore, AB
A devoted husband, father and grandfather, a farmer, arborist
and all-round lover of life, Hans died November 1st surrounded by his loving family. He will be fondly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Ida, their
children Rikke (Jim), Susanne (Steve), Peter (Fiona), and Kristina (Michael),
grandchildren Noah (Kristen), Adele, Aiyana, Lona, Kai, Erin, Julian, Matthew,
Gabriel and Frances, as well as many friends, neighbours and extended family.
Hans and Ida were married in Denmark on April 2, 1954 and soon thereafter
set sail to Pier 21. There they began their adventure in the new world. For six
years they worked on various farms in Alberta and Montana before settling
in Rockyford in 1960, where they farmed until the mid-nineties. Along the
way, they realised the dream of having their own land when, in 1975, they
purchased a farm in the Rosebud area. The farm remains with the family and,
throughout his retirement, Hans worked (and played) there, draining sloughs,
building ponds and planting and nurturing the many trees under which his
great-grandchildren will one day play.
Although Hans had little formal schooling he was a lifelong autodidact with a
broad range of interests. He loved puzzles, both practical and recreational. The
greater the challenge, the more determined he was to solve it. He could fix
anything from toasters to tractors and, along the way, with an eye to recycling
and repurposing, came up with a number of small but practical inventions.
He took up downhill skiing in his late fifties, para-sailed in his seventies and
began learning Spanish in his eighties.
Hans was the second of eight children and is survived by two sisters (Gudren
and Agnes) and a brother (Axel). His greatest gift to his family was not any
single accomplishment, but the vigour, courage and curiosity with which he
approached life and, ultimately, death.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to plant your own tree. Plunge your hands
into the moist soil, breathe deeply and embrace nature.
Please join us for a celebration of Hans life on Saturday, November 8th at 2
pm at Lord Of All Lutheran Church, 112 Lakeside Blvd, Strathmore.

On November 29th we are having our Annual Light Up the
and have a full day planned for everyone!
Night event
Starting at 1:30pm Aztec Real Estate Inc. is hosting a
Christmas Matinee at the Joyland Theatre. Just bring in a non
perishable food donation for the Strathmore Food Bank and enjoy the movie
POLAR EXPRESS, space is limited so be sure to come early!
After the movie the Town of Strathmore has asked Santa to come to
Kingsmen Park to visit with the kids and hand out candy on behalf of the Town.
This is happening between 3:30 and 5pm.
This leaves everyone lots of time to pick their favorite spot along the Parade
route as the parade starts at 5:30pm and runs until 6:00. The floats will be
lit up and you guessed it, more candy will be handed out!
We always welcome and encourage all those who would like to put a float into the parade.
Just give Rob or Tracey a call at Aztec Real Estate Inc. to get your entry form and all the details
After the parade everyone can venture up to the Ag grounds for 6:30 pm where a group of
dedicated people have prepared the theme park for your enjoyment! There you will be able
to have your photo taken with Santa, enjoy a fireworks show and charity BBQ and stroll through
the park to take in all the displays.
