Running dictation

This lively activity uses texts to practice reading,


speaking, listening and writing.

The teacher chooses a short text. Puts several copies of the text
up around the walls of the classroom (or even the school
building).
Puts the learners in pairs.
The aim is for one of the learners in each team to walk (or
run!) to read the text on the wall. They memorize some of the
text (three or four words), return to their partner and dictate
what they remember. Their partner writes the text.

Learners swap roles when the teacher shouts Change!


Over several turns they build the whole text.

The winner is the team that finishes first.


Learners compare their writing with the text and make any
corrections.
Use the text for the next part of the lesson; for example,
questions about the text or a discussion.

Building Sentences
This activity uses random words to practice
vocabulary and sentence building

The teacher puts students into groups of 3


Hands out envelopes with random words (verbs, prepositions,
adjectives, nouns, adverbs) to each group.
The aim is that each group must build and write down as many
sentences of a specific length, (5,7,9) depending on the
difficulty, during a set period of time (10, 15, 20)
The group with the highest number of sentences wins

This activity practices vocabulary

The teacher puts students into groups of 3


Hands out sheets with designated categories in different
columns (verbs, prepositions, adjectives, nouns, adverbs) and
or (vegetable/fruit, city/country, thing, sport, animal) to each
group.
The aim is that each group must come up with words with the
allotted letter for each category.
Once they complete each category they yell out stop. Every
group then stops and presents their answers.
The group with the answers that no other group has is
awarded maximum points. If they repeat then they share the
points. If they don`t have an answer they get 0
After a number of rounds with different letters, the groups
must write a story using the words they have written.
The team with the most points wins
The team with the most extraordinary story gets a consolation
price.

Guessing the Differences


This activity uses questions to figure out clues in a
picture

The teacher puts students into groups of 2


Hands out a picture to each student.
The pictures have a certain number of differences which the
students have to figure out from each other
They use vocabulary sheet given, or taught previously
The teacher puts students into groups of 3

Drawing what you hear


This activity practices Listening

The teacher puts students into groups of 2


Hands out a blank sheet of paper to each student.
The teacher describes a picture which every group must draw
from the description given by him/her
The students then show their picture to see how close they
were in drawing the picture
