August being our iconic issue has naturally taken us back to the basics.
Its a perfect opportunity to remember the icons of fashion not only
the people who made our fashion favourites famous, but also a tribute
to those pieces today. With the season very slowly reaching its bow out,
try sticking to what you could see yourself wearing with confidence
moving forward and to not turn your back on the classics in the process
(if anything, invest in some its never too late). The great thing about
fashion today is that there is no right or wrong, but instead, thoughtful
and considered ways of dressing; besides when you keep things simple,
theres plenty room for the basics and newcomers to work together, no
matter what the weather.

The classic French twist exudes
elegance, and carries iconic value
like no other. Hair on the catwalks
however spoke a very different
language: we love the casually
dishevelled hair twists seen at Tom

The key to the updated twist? A centre
part and the artful but seemingly
incidental way of twisting and pinning
the hair at the nape of the neck.

UNABASHEDLY ROUGE
The power of a fabulous red lip
remains a womans favourite, and one
of the most dramatic beauty looks. At
Altuzarra, Tom Pecheuxs description
was The red lip gets an edgy feel
against a white eye making it more
cool. The strength of a matte red lies in
its intensity and opacity contrasted with
the rest of the face. A wash of white or
nude over the whole eye, and dramatic
highlights and a marked lack of cheek
colour make the saturated red pigment
seem to lift off the face.

BANDEAU ANYONE?
You know you cant ignore a trend when it
starts popping up at every show interpreted
in new, fresh aesthetics. At Azroul and Vera
Wang, the bandeau moved away from the
tennis court into a streamlined finish evocative
of ballerinas with clean foreheads and sleek
ponies. If youre not a minimalist girl, look to
Dolce & Gabbana, Elie Saab and Valentino
who played with leather, studs and embellished

Our tip
Opt for a wet-look
liquid liner such as MAC
Superslick Liquid Eyeliner,
R220, for a long-lasting
3D effect.
Its time to move from the feminine flick to a more free-hand approach.
This season the liner is all about individuality with strong graphic elements
from Derek Lams cube liner positioned on the outer corner of the
upper lash, to the bold and unapologetic weighted wedge seen at Haider
Ackerman where sharp lines made a major comeback. Feeling flirty? Try
line drawing in the crease of the eye as seen at Missoni.

The fresh-face look has been with us for a
couple of seasons now, and gives no signs
of waning anytime soon. Achieved with a
healthy dose of moisture complemented with
a little well-placed concealer, the palette of
colours departs from bronzers and coverage
to creamy finishes in pinky-peachy tones
mixed with sheer highlights for skin that
breathes! Chanel, Phillip Lim and Diane
von Furstenberg executed the look to
perfection: pearlised translucent skin with
soft pink lips and defined lashes.

What movie cant you wait to see?
The Giver. Earlier this year Cape Town read
like a whos who of Hollywood. Everyone
from Katie Holmes to Meryl Streep was
in town, all in the name of The Giver.
The ELLE Belles even spied Alexander
Skarsgrd at the Mount Nelson hotel
and mauled him for a selfie. Dystopian
sci-fi movies usually arent my bag, but
I cant resist watching this flick, if only
to spot the South African locations and

literally on our doorstep.
What art exhibition are you going

festival is on from 13-23 August. This
years theme is 'Design Is For Change'
20 years after democracy the idea is to explore and demonstrate
how design can advocate transformation, and enable perpetual
improvement and growth in our country.
Wheres your favourite new spot for lunch/dinner/
breakfast/brunch, etc.? I love good food, a log fire and oaky
red wine in winter. Delheim Estate in Stellenbosch is putting on
jazz and cheese fondue days, every Sunday until the
end of August. The underground tasting cellar makes
for a hearty gathering with warm Glhwein, pipinghot swiss raclettes and toe-tapping tunes to melt the
winter blues away. At R185 a person its a steal.

oung, ambitious and
spirited, Siki Msuseni is not
a woman to be taken lightly.
She knows what she wants
and she is out to get it.
Known for her larger-than-life hair,
Msuseni is a familiar face around
Cape Town and the fashion scene,
but shes built up her reputation on
her own. At just 23, shes a freelance
stylist and blogger and loves working
for herself. I appreciate the flexibility
of time and not having to wake up on
a cold rainy day.
Prior to her fashion career,
Msuseni worked at a property
development company and her first
position was a researcher for a teen
show, Keeping it Real (clearly an early
starter in the professional world!).
Of all her previous positions its her
internship at Drum that shaped her
career. I learnt so much while I was
there and the skills I acquired have
equipped me till this day.
Msuseni is a lover of all things
vintage but admits that it is difficult
to maintain, and now finds herself
heading into the larger retailers and
rather adds her own twist to an outfit
with an unexpected accessory.
Although she loves working in the
heart of Cape Towns CBD, eating
sushi at Beluga and going to the
Loading Bay (her favourite local), she
misses the genuineness of the people
from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape
and finds that her home town has a
greater influence on her style than in
the past. I see my style gravitating
more to an African aesthetic. Im
beginning to appreciate African
fabrics although I can never leave
out my endless love for vintage items,
which was introduced to me by my
mother and older sister.
Where does she see herself one
day? As a trend forecaster or fashion
buyer for H&M or Zara and we
have no doubt thats exactly where
she will be.

kind of work that appeals to her dudeish daredevil
side (lets not forget that both she and Pitt are pilots,
and they both have airplanes). And its one detail in
a million crucial to accurately telling the true story
of Louis Zamperini, a 1930s delinquent turned
Olympic runner turned Army airman who survived
an airplane crash at sea, 47 days marooned in a
rubber raft, and more than two years of torment
in Japans notoriously brutal POW camps only to
return to America a national hero. His story is the
subject of Seabiscuit writer Laura Hillenbrands 2010
book, Unbroken; its also a project that has been in
turnaround for the 55-odd years since Zamperini
sold the film rights. Im happy that I can do
something that has nothing to do with my physical
presence or anything but my mind. Im very much
more comfortable like this, she says. These days she
is appropriately grateful for the opportunity to star
in movies but freely admits she enjoys that part of
her job only to a point.
It should come as no surprise that a woman who
created a family of six children across multiple
continents in six years, who involves herself in the
struggles of refugee communities worldwide, who
built her own definition of domesticity with the
most famous sex symbol in Hollywood, would, upon
discovering a new career passion, dive in at the deep
end. Her directorial debut, 2011s In the Land of Blood
and Honey, incited political controversy even before it
was released, by exposing the brutality of the early
90s civil war in the former Yugoslavia through
the fraught love story of a Bosnian woman and her
captor, a Serbian officer. The result was a film told
with deep humanity and an evident determination
to faithfully represent the truths of the era. It
was also gritty, muscular and uncompromising
instantly gaining Jolie entre to a rarefied club of
female directors. But Blood and Honey was an indie,
made for a relatively modest $10 million. Unbroken,
on the other hand, will be a Hollywood epic, with
all the advantages, expectations and logistics that
go along with that, set in a period that spans from
the 1920s through the war years and that includes
Hitlers 1936 Olympics. Brought in to revise the
script, veteran filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen
called the undertaking a motherfucker, joking that
they were glad to be able to write the thing and
not have to figure out how to make it. Add to that
the fact that Universal scheduled the films release
for Christmas Day 2014 and dropped a prominent
trailer for it during the opening ceremonies of the
Sochi Olympics, and you get a sense of the stakes.
Unbroken will be the test of Jolies career. A-list actress
turns serious director is unusual who, besides
here is a piece of behind-the-scenes
footage, probably locked deep in the
Disney vault, that the tabloids would
pay millions to get their hands on.
In it, a then four-year-old Vivienne
Marcheline Jolie-Pitt makes her
big-screen debut, as a somewhat
reluctant participant in Maleficent, the prequel to
Sleeping Beauty. Her first day, she doesnt want to put
the dress on. Then she wants to have food and she
wants to get the dress off. Then she doesnt want
to do her hair. Then she wants to go play in the
mud. Then she loses her other shoe, says the young
actress mother. All she had to do that day was chase
this little ball on the end of a stick, which would be
turned into a butterfly. But we realised on that day
that anything you tell her to do, she will not do. So
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt spent the day acting
like rodeo clowns. Ive got the stick, and hes on the
edge of the [fake] cliff so that when she jumps, she
jumps into his arms. Were making these faces and
singing these songs, anything we can do, she says,
shaking her head with bewildered affection familiar
to all parents. Disney did tell me those were some of
the funniest outtakes theyd ever seen.
Angelina Jolie tells this story in the commissary
on the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles, a spot
that is remarkable only for being one of the few
places in the developed world where Angelina Jolie
can unselfconsciously eat lunch in plain view. As she
stirs honey into her mint tea and talks with openness
about her band of six children, clearly her favourite
subject, theres a moment to take in her face, which is
a process, in that it is somehow unlike all other faces.
Jolie simply has been given more than her fair
share: the cheekbones, the pillowy lips, the almond
eyes in a placid shade of blue that you cant quite
make out on film. Whats surprising about seeing all
that well-documented bounty from just a foot away is
the canvas on which its composed, which is so very
delicate. Jolie is almost wraithlike in her slenderness.
The action figure who kicks and claws and shoots
and punches her way through Salt and Mr. and Mrs.
Smith and all three Tomb Raiders clearly radiates from
the mind, not the limbs. Indeed, cloaked in her usual
utilitarian black pants and loose black shirt there
is something nearly uncorporal about this woman.
This probably has everything to do with the project
that she has reluctantly left upstairs for a few hours
editing her second directorial effort, the WWII epic
Unbroken, which will come out at the end of the year.
All morning Jolie has been studying the flight
patterns of Americas lumbering B-24 bomber versus
that of the smaller, zippier Japanese Zero. Its the

will be evil. She was very pointed in her direction,
says producer Joe Roth. Heres the determination
you have to make as a producer: Is it going to make
a great movie, or is it going to get in the way? Shes
only interested in making a great movie. Shes a
perfectionist. She has no interest in people who are
not willing to go the distance to make things great,
and she requires people to have the same level of
commitment she has. So its a hard working process,
but it ends up being a great result.
Jolie, he says, is involved in every aspect, from the
way the costumes look to the way the marketing looks,
and she has a very clear idea about who she is as a
person, and also who she is as people perceive her.
Ive never worked with anybody, in all my years, who
has such a complete picture of what it is to be a movie
actor and a movie star.
Disneys original Maleficent, being a pre-CGI kind
of gal, concentrated her fear-striking powers in that
voice, the goosebump-inducing snarl that has haunted
childrens nightmares for generations. Learning to
really roar took training. Very rarely do women
play at their full voice, full power, full strength, she
says. I realised in my life there was never really an
opportunity to use my full voice. I dont use it in my
house, certainly, and I dont use it in my life. Finding
the locus of that sound, its almost like if someone
punched you in the stomach, she says. The first time
I really did it, it didnt feel like it was coming from me.
I recommend it to anyone, to just go to the ocean or
wherever and try it.
Then came the eerie amber contact lenses, the
sweeping robes, and the staff, says her co-star, Elle
Fanning, who, in a brilliant casting move, plays
Aurora, the light to Maleficents darkness. That
was really part of her character, so she just wanted
to walk around with it on set. She comes in with the
staff, and she commands the room. Its like, You are
Maleficent. But the real pices de rsistance were the
prosthetics: chiseled, finlike cheekbone extensions,
and just enough around the nose to harden even that
innocuous feature all of it done under Jolies explicit
instruction. (Roth says the only time he intervened
was when the cheekbones got too extreme: Whats
the point of having Angelina Jolie if she looks like
the Elephant Man?) The transformation is surreal
Maleficent is Jolie and yet not her at all, a larger-thanlife apparition that took even the actress by surprise.
You get into those horns and those heels, she
says, and youre a seven-and-a-half-foot-tall creature,
wondering why little kids dont want to talk to you.
For the cherubic infant playing Aurora as a baby, just
the sight of Jolies horned shape coming toward her
would bring on a meltdown.
Jodie Foster, comes to mind? A-list actress turns bigbudget war-movie director? It has never been done.
Jolie hasnt acted in a film since 2010, when she
starred in The Tourist with Johnny Depp and the
ass-kicking spy blitz Salt. She knew that for a film to
pull her back in front of the camera it would have
to be something slightly extreme that would push
me to do something out of my comfort zone, she
says. And so completely bizarre that it wasnt just
returning to do regular scenes. Maleficent certainly
delivers. When I tell her she is deeply terrifying in
the film, she seems touched, as if Id paid her the
highest compliment. Aw, thank you, she replies
with genuine gratitude.

Jolie adored her mother, who died at 56 in 2007 of
ovarian cancer; she has spoken of her admiringly as
a very soft woman, the kind who never raised her
voice at her children. But there were repercussions
from watching what could happen to a woman
like that, struggling to raise a family alone. I never
thought Id have children, I never thought Id be in
love, I never thought Id meet the right person, Jolie
says. Having come from a broken home you kind
of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and
you just dont look for them. So when in her early
20s journalists would interview her, she says she
thought, I dont have anything to share, I dont have
anything to contribute, I dont know yet what that is.
You start asking those questions you want to know
that youre a person of substance.
Her path to self-discovery provided the viewing
public with some gems: There was the girlfriend, the
early marriage to Jonny Lee Miller, the other early
marriage to Billy Bob Thornton, the infamous vials
of blood, the frequent assertions (in interviews and
occasionally on red carpets) of sexual daring. After all
that, the revelation that Angelina Jolie was suddenly
jetting off on United Nations missions around the
world was perhaps the most puzzling of all.
The tumult was misinterpreted as [me] wanting to
be rebellious, Jolie says. And in fact it wasnt a need
to be destructive or rebellious its that need to find
a full voice, to push open the walls around you. You
want to be free. And as you start to feel that you are
being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push
against it. It may come out very strange; it may be
interpreted wrong, but youre trying to find out who
you are. What she hit upon was a deep and abiding
fear of a life half-lived, she says. I realised that very
young that a life where you dont live to your full
potential, or you dont experiment, or youre afraid,
or you hesitate, or there are things you know you
should do but you just dont get around to them, is
a life that Id be miserable living, and the only way
to feel that Im on the right path is just to be true to
myself, whatever that may be, and that tends to come
with stepping out of something thats maybe safe
or traditional.
On the basis that she doesnt want to use her
health issues to promote Maleficent, Jolie declines
to elaborate on the much-parsed subject of her
double mastectomy, a doubtlessly painful multiphase
procedure that she underwent last year after
discovering that she, like her mother, carries the
BRCA1 cancer gene mutation. Its hard to imagine
her being more candid about what she went through
than she was in her May 2013 New York Times
op-ed, My Medical Choice, which both cemented
This poor little kid that silhouette is going to
haunt her for life, Jolie says. Shell be afraid of
goats and not know why. Even Jolies own 10-yearold, Pax (more of a Dumbo man himself), would
not come near her until he and his siblings had
visited the hair and-make-up trailer, where they
could literally see my teeth come out, my eyes
come out, my prosthetics come off, and understand
what it was. Thus the casting of Vivienne (twin to
brother Knox) was something of a necessity. For
young Aurora, they needed a child who wouldnt be
fazed by the Mistress of All Evil hissing I dont like
children in her face. And my little Vivienne we
call her my shadow, because theres nothing I can
do to shake her. I can be tired, I can be grumpy,
I can be in a terrible mood, and she just doesnt
care. Its Mommy, Mommy, and shell cling to
me, Jolie says. We knew that she would still do that
thing, shed still smile at me and insist that I pick
her up. So we couldnt really cast

she says. Anyway, after two days
of it, Brad and I were so stressed we never wanted
to do it again.
If Jolie takes a certain pride in seven-year-old
Shilohs burgeoning riot-grrrl attitude its probably
because, like her daughter, she grew up more
interested in daggers than dresses. Rubbing
shoulders with the rich kids at Beverly Hills
High School but coming home to a household
with a tight budget her mother, former actress
Marcheline Bertrand, gave up her career to raise
two kids without the support of their famous and
famously derelict father, Jon Voight Angelina

to me, she says. I needed him myself, hes gotten me
through some things recently, his fight and his fire
and his positive attitude, and his willingness to just
go face in to things and tackle them. While Jolie was
shooting Unbroken in Australia, Pitt was working on
his own WWII drama, Fury, in England. It was the
first time theyd broken their parenting pact while
one shoots a film, the other runs the family full-time
and she says they wont do it again.
Asked what has changed about her relationship
with Pitt now that theyre eight years in, she pauses.
Its funny, its one of those questions I havent asked
myself Im discovering that as I sit here, she says,
laughing. How do I feel? Brad would probably be
very curious to hear this. She pauses for a second.
Werefamily, she says.
For a woman who thought shed never have a
family of her own, then blew up with the kind
of fame that can become an isolation chamber,
thats saying a lot. You get together and youre two
individuals and you feel inspired by each other,
you challenge each other, you complement each
other, drive each other beautifully crazy. After all
these years, we have history and when you have
history with somebody, youre friends in such a very
real, deep way that theres such a comfort, and an
ease, and a deep love that comes from having been
through quite a lot together.
Which wends our way to the next question the
one thats been selling gossip rags for eight years.
You know whats funny? she says. We even forget
that were engaged. I dont even know how long
weve been engaged for
Two years, I interrupt, perhaps a little too
quickly wondering how anyone could forget
something like that while wearing such a blinding
reminder on her left ring finger every day. Thank
you. She laughs. Thats funny.
Of course shes not going to give us an answer.
But if it makes you feel better, the Jolie-Pitt children
are in the same boat as the rest of us. I tell you, the
kids are so excited about the wedding, she says.
We cant tell them when it is, and they dont know
when it is. They thought it was last year, and then
it wasnt. But they wont make them wait forever.
Its an unusual situation, where all eight of us are
kind of getting married, she says. I think the kids
may feel much more at peacemaybe it feels more
permanent. They understand what marriage is and
the concept of it. And they like the idea of Mommy
and Daddy getting married. Shiloh may not care
for princesses, but she is studying the art of being a
flower girl.
her standing as Hollywoods living embodiment of
conscience and ignited a public debate about cancer
screening and treatment.
It was a courageous act for any woman, and all
the more so for one whose living in part depends on
how the public perceives her sex appeal. In the midst
of this, Unbroken served as both a metaphor for and a
welcome diversion from the ordeal. I was very happy
I had a project I love to centre me and focus me, and
to get right back to work, she says.
Jolie has said that in 2009, after being in a
nightgown for months following the birth of her
twins, she signed on for Salt because she was looking
forward to the most physically challenging role of her
career. After turning herself over to the softer side of
womanhood, she wanted to fight, throw punches,
kick bad guys. To remind herself (and the rest of us)
of the flip side of her coin. Unbroken similarly feeds
those parts of Jolie. The role of Louis Zamperini is
a real mans man, she says, with obvious relish. Its
nice to have a character like that. Its good for all of
us, but its also good for boys. Jolie, as always, has
her children, particularly her three sons, in mind. I
think Unbroken will be the one that will teach them
something about life that I can try to tell them, but
better just to show them an example of someone who
I think is a great human being.
If she had any lingering doubts as to whether this
was the right story for her to tell, those were quelled
when she decided to try to find Zamperini, now 97,
and discovered that he lives three
minutes up the road from her home
in the Los Angeles hills close

ts about more than simply
having missed out or opted out of
motherhood and its associated family
life. When bestselling author Melanie
Notkin coined the term Otherhood as
the title of her new book, she highlighted
the implicit social ultimatum that many
women face. Its about the assumption
that being single and/or childless (childfree perhaps the more appropriate term)
in your 30s or 40s implies negligence,
fertility, or the choice to put a career
over a potential family life. The spillover
effect in many social settings is an
exclusion that leaves these women out of
the fold of their peers who are mothers.
An exclusion that carries with it the
unshakeable shadow of inferiority.
When Notkin wrote Otherhood: Finding
a New Kind of Happiness, she set out to
legitimise these Others, saying: [the
book] denotes our tribe our fabulous,
extraordinary, never-settling-on-love
tribe. The tribe, she hopes, that will give
the women who have found themselves
falling short of the expectations of
society, the vocabulary to articulate
their experiences to those who do not
understand them.
Modern women live in a world that
generations before them would not
be able to relate to. Now they have
freedom and access to opportunities
that were simply not available to their
mothers and grandmothers. The scope
to climb corporate ladders or become
entrepreneurs. The decision to follow
their passions. However, with this
modern ourishing comes the ever-rising
percentage of young, childless women;
55
@ ELLEmagazineSA
a trend that is not being met with the
acceptance and acknowledgement that
it deserves. Women are waiting longer
to have children and start families to
settle down than they did before, yet
the perception is still that a childless life
is the exception and not the norm.
These lives that women are building
are increasingly shifting away from the
traditional roles theyve been exposed to
for most of their lives. Cutting the apron
strings from lives that have the potential
to look like the examples they grew up to
know. Setting a new and different course
to sail and giving new meaning
to womanhood.
DeVries Global, an international
public relations micro-network, set out
to understand this new and growing
demographic in a study called Shades of
Otherhood that aimed to give a woman
without children a commercial prole,
and frame her in terms society could
potentially identify with. Taking on the
challenge to develop the prole of the
modern non-mom, they dened her as:
single and never married; living with a
partner or same-sex partner; married;
separated; divorced; or widowed with
no children.
The Otherhood is made up of a
diverse and complex cohort that has
nally found its time to shine, says
the studys designer and lead analyst,
Michael De Cicco, the senior director of
Research and Analytics at
DeVries Global.
The study refers to a 2010 US Census
Bureau Study that showed that 47%
of women of childbearing age in the
US are not mothers. In the 20-44 age
group, one in every three women is
regarded as an Other compared to her
peers who are mothers. These numbers
show a marked increase in the number

Otherhood and embracing the childless
life is the next era for feminism; seeking
equality for women who dont have
children.
Flex time for working moms means
ex time for working non-moms to take
care of the important things in their
lives, like ageing parents, says Notkin by
way of example.
While it is important to acknowledge
the mom-focused world we live in,
Otherhood feels like yet another word
weve manufactured into the feminist
lexicon; another box to tick and another
reach for the widest scope of equality by
emphasising inequalities that may not be
as drastic.
Notkins notion that childless and
child-free women are social pariahs
may not really be the case. The most
empowering thing to be taken from
understanding the movement is
recognising that motherhood does not
necessarily complete the implied empty
and purposeless lives of women. It is
an acknowledgement that life without
children is not an endless hedonistic and
narcissistic series of expensive travel,
groceries, beauty products and
unrivalled spontaneity; and that
becoming a mother doesnt mean you
lose the woman you were before your
womb gained occupants.
Otherhood then is not the new wave
of feminism, it is feminism. The freedom

ELLEs Holly Meadows explores the increasing feminist

WOMEN IN SOCIETY
eminism is enjoying
a hard-won moment
of mainstream
popularity, says Lori
Adelman, executive
director at the
award-winning site
Feministing.com.
Adelman is right, and if youre
a Twitter user like me, youll
have seen the platform bubble to
the fore with the use of hashtag
activism.
According to recent statistics
released by Finances Online,
who compiled surveys from
Pew Research Center and Burst
Media, women not men are
driving and dominating social
media sites. Of the so-called Big
6 (the six biggest social media
sites in the world Facebook,
Instagram and LinkedIn), men
have more inuence on only one
of these platforms, LinkedIn.
This year has seen an explosive
interaction between female
activism and Twitter. From
#NoMakeupSele to #BanBossy,
#GirlBoss #YesAllWomen
and #FreeTheNipple, women
the world over have taken to
the little blue bird and all of
its 140 characters to provoke
conversation and address issues,
most notably about womens rights
and gender-based oppression.
As Adelman says, Twitter acts
as a microcosm (and a shbowl)
for how [feminist] issues play out
more broadly in the world
Twitter along with other online
spaces have helped elevate
the voices of marginalised
communities and offered new
venues for feminist action.
In hindsight it feels like an
upwelling of feminist collective,
its another example of
philosopher Marshall Mcluhans
Global Village 50 years on and
an extension of consciousness
that allows us to feel connected,
if only fractionally, to what you
feel on the other side of the world.
And while that sentiment might
be wrought with naivety and
schoolgirl pitfalls, it is important,
and it remains important.
Dating back to the Iranian
uprising and the Arab Spring,
Twitter and its ability to connect
diverse networks of voices, lately
through its simple hashtag system,
has given ordinary individuals the
ability to rally powerful political
action, spark protests, unveil
corruption and liberate opinion
that unify women. What has
changed with the advent of social
media is its more democratic
nature, its ability to bypass
traditional gatekeepers, and its
immediate pushback. Debate is
no longer insular and Twitter,
although in part exclusive, offers
those who are unable to travel or
do not have access to traditional
publishing tools, a platform share
ideas beyond their location.
However, with the relatively
recent adoption of the hashtag
comes criticism, which naysayers
claim are lazy and have
narcissistic undertones. The
argument is not new but a rehash
of the 90s debate on slacktivism
that jumping on the digital
bandwagon is a convenient way
to feel good about yourself, and

are the critics who point ngers at
the rst-world creators of hashtags,
often labelled as privileged,
do-gooding outsiders with
imperialist, misguided agendas.
And this is perhaps what made
#Kony2012 and its NGO roots all
the more bleh.
And as were on the topic,
say what you will about
#BringBackOurGirls being
co-opted by the west to put
pressure (whether you believe it
meddling or not) on Goodluck
Jonathans political agenda to
do more against kidnapping
Boko Haram terrorists, or
#NoMakeupSelfes being adopted
by Cancer Research UK to raise
millions of pounds for a charitable
cause so desperately in need of
funding. These are only the latest
in a long-standing debate between
people who think that awareness
is its own kind of aid and protest,
and those, who for many different
reasons, do not. Ultimately it is up
to us to make our own personal
and educated decisions about how
we will use the hashtag and back
the cause.
However, this article serves
not to decide what is right or
wrong, but to highlight the
recent spate of hashtag activism
being adopted by women, for
women, to create real and
valuable international discourse
on sexism, misogyny and gender
issuers like never before.
Lets talk about
#YesAllWomen, perhaps
one of the most pervasively
encompassing hashtags of late.
Why? Because every single one
of us, especially in South Africa,
has felt the threat of violence from
men at some point.
Back in May this year,
22-year-old Californian Elliot
Rodger went on a vicious killing
spree in Isla Vista; murdering
six people, injuring 13 others
and immediately taking his
own cowardly life. This was a
man who hated women and left
behind a 140-page manifesto, plus
various retiribution videos that
revealed him to be an aggressive
misogynist inspired to murder
and create a war on women for
starving him of sex.
Rodger wrote:
You girls have never been
attracted to me. I dont know
why you girls arent attracted to
me, but I will punish you all for
it. Its an injustice I dont know
what you dont see in me. Im the
perfect guy and yet you throw
yourselves at these obnoxious
men instead of me, the supreme
gentleman.
Rodgers words, unforgiveable
actions and emphasis on male
sexual entitlement alarmed
women the world over and
spurned millions of tweets using
the hashtag #YesAllWomen to
recount powerful, frightening
and most importantly shared
experiences that highlight a
widespread patriarchal system
where violence is never far away.
As South African educational
psychologist and The Mail &
Guardian columnist Andrew
Verrijdt said:
The story of Elliot Rodger
is about a lot of things that are
wrong with society And society
is far too tolerant of cowards who
think that violence against women
is justied.
Yes, this is true and here is the
proof, over and over again:
@AspiringImages: When a woman
gets a position of power, many ask
Whod she sleep with to get that
job? #YesAllWomen.
@IAmSophiaNelson:
#YesAllWomen have a right to
their peace of mind & body. And
that includes the right to not be
stalked or killed by men who they
may reject.
@KendallMcK: When women
trust men, were naive idiots who
shouldve known better. When
women fear men, were hysterical,
paranoid feminazis.
@AngryBlackLady:
#YesAllWomen never leave
their drink unattended at a bar or
a party.
@Schemaly: #YesAllWomen
because its 2014 and men continue
to shoot girls and throw acid on
them because they dont want them
to go to school.
@JillianClare: #YesAllWomen
because we live in such a sad world
that a hashtag has to be created
for sexual harassment to be taken
seriously.
@SophiaBush: I shouldnt have to
hold my car keys in hand like a
weapon & check over my shoulder
every few seconds when I walk at
night #YesAllWomen.
@NikoWavy: #YesAllWomen
because we live in a society where
we teach women how to avoid rape,
but dont teach men self-control.
There is something about the fact
that Twitter only allows for short,
strong utterances that make it
all the more powerful a vehicle
for activism. And it has been
argued by The New York Times
and The Guardian, among others,
that we have entered the fourth

wave of feminism The Digital
Wave. But dont think that this is
just a white, western domain. Yes,
many of the hashtags garnering
global mainstream attention have
originated in Eurocentric hubs,
but as Nigerian-Finnish expert on
gender issues in African society,
Minna Salami argues:
African women have used
technologies to tackle sexism and
repressive traditions; they have used
blogs and forums to document their
stories and to connect with each
other; and they have used

But, as Salami asserts, these stories
are by no means exhaustive and it
is up to us to raise awareness about
our own Afrocentric gender-based
struggles. Twitter, at times mundane,
cathartic and toxic, is a wonderful
tool among many to spark inclusive
discourses with the rest of the world

pathological romanticism that
manifests itself in an insatiable
craving for continuous and chronic
adoration, the likes of which are
found only in Victorian novels
and Hollywood movies.
Predictably, I caught the romance bug
when I was a kid from repeated exposure
to love-centric movies and books, which
I was drawn to like a hungry dog to an
overturned trash can. I was a solitary,
daydreaming girl. My books, TV shows
and movies were silent companions
that stirred my imagination without
challenging my shaky self-assurance. Ive
read Wuthering Heights so many times that
it feels like a part of my consciousness.
Ive watched and re-watched classics
such as Gone with the Wind and Casablanca
and gravitated toward teen-love dreams
like Say Anything and Sixteen Candles. I
embraced those idealised representations
of love, which Id like to think played some
role in making me a loyal, loving partner
but more likely made me the needy
why-arent-you-acting-like-a-teenageJohn-Cusack nightmare I am today.
I spent my 20s permanently
disappointed by nice guys who just
wanted to have dinner rather than brood
darkly or proclaim their undying devotion
and I romanticised my fair share of
outrageous expectations surrounding love.
Now in my 30s and married, Im starting
to think that my attempts to fuse real life
and romantic fantasy make me as silly as
a teenage boy with a pornography habit
hoping to nd a ready-and-willing Jenna

Still, I torture my husband with my
constant craving for absurdly romantic

would be a nice touch.) I want him to

love and romance at least partly, says
Peter Pearson, a marriage therapist,
co-founder of The Couples Institute
in California and co-author of the
Marriage manual Tell Me No Lies.
Pop culture bombards us with
impossible-to-replicate messages, says
Pearson, citing a list of romcoms that
always begin with drama and end in
happily ever after. Wanting romance
like that is not in a vacuum, he says. But
culture is only one part of the equation.
Women may get zinged from biology
too, he says, mentioning evolutionary
theories that suggest that women become
aroused more slowly and therefore
require more wooing likely because it
was biologically advantageous for us to
be selective about mating.
Evolutionary psychologists debate
the merits of this idea some argue the
opposite, that promiscuity multiplied
chances of success and was therefore
a strong urge too but there is some
evidence to suggest that women prioritise
intimacy with their partners over almost
every other facet of life. One study by
happiness researchers that appeared
in the Journal of Economic Psychology
found that when asked to design their
perfect day, American women put sex,
cuddling and general intimacy at the
top of the list (just after a good nights
sleep). Working and commuting were
at the bottom of the list. Unfortunately,
the researchers didnt ask the same
question of men, so theres no way to
compare the sexes. But the study results
reveal just how little the reality of our
lives with work consuming most of our
day and time with loved ones getting
stuffed in wherever possible aligns
with our desires. Given this discrepancy,
its no wonder we seek quick and dirty
fulllment through fantasy.
And, boy, do we ever. In 2012,
romance novels rang up $1.4 billion in
sales in the United States. A whopping
91 percent of those book buyers were
women, more than half of whom were
married or lived with someone, which
suggests that every relationship requires
a little fantasy on the side. (Though Ive

ot so long ago, horoscopes were just a
pick-up tool for men in half-unbuttoned
polyester shirts, but theres been a
movement in the stars. You no longer
have to be in a hotel bar for people
to genuinely care whether youre a Virgo or an
Aries. People are suddenly consulting astrologers for
everything from determining the best date to launch
a partnership, product or project, to dealing with
co-workers.
Astrologer Susan Miller frequently finds herself
consulting on colour choices for brands, including
Furla. She is the go-to stargazer of the fashion world
(thanks in part to the fact shes mother to Chrissie
Miller the designer behind cult New York brand

people to start new business ventures on her website,
Astrology Zone, which is read by six million people
worldwide a month.
Its not just the fashion world thats turning to
astrology for guidance, either. Theres a long history
of people using it to boost their career or get an edge
on the market. Former United States president Ronald
Reagan often consulted the stars for political guidance.
and JP Morgan, the owner of the worlds first billiondollar company US Steel, once said millionaires dont
use astrology, billionaires do.
Were just interested in empowering people, says
Ophira Edut one half of the Edut twins, who write
ELLE Australias horoscope. Astrology is a universal
connector everyone relates to it. Edut says her clients
want to know how to boost their work performance
and that she has a diverse list of people consulting
with her. We have some highly powerful clients in
media, publishing, fashion, politics, plus a secretary
of state and even the daughter of an African president
I helped her when she was thinking about the

Hollywood-based actress Melanie Camp swears by
astrology in helping her career, which incorporates
radio and a stint on True Blood in the enviable role of
Bill and Erics chew toy, Dorothy. Camp credits her
understanding of general career issues, the best days
to work her mojo and how to get the best out of others
to Sydney-based astrologer Mystic Medusa. You
cant always control others timing but I get excited
when I get to work on a project with great stars the
astrological ones, I mean, not the Hollywood ones.
Before I talk to my lawyer or business manager
about a deal Ill consult with Mystic Medusa to get
an overview of the terrain we are dealing with and
it can be quite specific, she says. For instance, using
astrology you can pinpoint an optimal launch date
[for a project], in some cases, down to the hour of
the day. It feels pretty powerful working like that!
Sydney-based HR executive Dana Maguire uses
astrological advice when scheduling meetings and
handling staffing issues. Maguire says she also uses it
to: mainly identify when to, or not to, have difficult
conversations with people about their performance
and when not to schedule important meetings that
might be tricky.
Mystic Medusa, whos spent over a decade as a
web prophetess, estimates about a quarter of her
subscribers are corporate or business-genius types.
They read the horoscopes to get a blast of motivation,
or alerts on any crap going down, and organise
individual consults with issues of timing.
Astrologers believe that, just like people, projects
and businesses have birth dates that are subject to
predictable celestial influences. Edut says that its a
matter of matching the business to the planets and
houses, If you want to open a fashion store, then youd
want to launch it on a day when Venus the planet
of beauty and style is in. According to Medusa,
Google is a Virgo and Twitter is an Aries. But I'm
more about helping individuals find brilliant dates
for their enterprises and manage the current astroweirding.
Astro-weirding is one way to describe our continual
financial crises and upheaval. Camp insists astrology
has helped her navigate safely through this time. Its
become apparent that most of the professional advisers
wed ordinarily turn to have absolutely no idea whats
going on in the world. It was only through astrology
that I found predictions of the global meltdown and
strategies to cope with, and even benefit from it.
Though Maguire doesnt freely admit to her
colleagues that she takes astrological cues for corporate
concerns, she still retains an open mind: It might not
all be attributable to the astro, but I dont think you
can discount it totally! she says. Meanwhile, Camp lets
everyone know about her relationship with astrology.
Just today I was explaining to my insurance agent that
wed have to wait until Mercury went direct before I
signed any contracts with him. He was like, "Sorry, so
whos going to be your director?" she laughs.

Are you a dreamy or a daring kind of
girl? We give you a sneak peek into
whats in store for all of ou this season
vs
L O - F I
Pastel colours have a softness to them
that is attractive and feminine but can be
daunting as the look can quickly move
from cool-modern Lolita to sickly sweet
dated territory. A few of our favourites
on the catwalk were the light pinks of
Burburry Prorsum, greens at Giorgio
Armani and Badgley Mischka, and lilacs
at Holly Fulton. The key is to keep the
eyeshadow application sheer think
of a wash of watercolour. For a subtle
effect, blend the colour around the eye
but not too high above the socket. Lash
to brow colour is great on the catwalk
but doesnt translate well for an everyday
look. The modernity of this trend lies
in the simplicity and overall bare face.
H I - F I
Bold colour on the eyes conjures the 80s
and the enduringly unused colour in
our mak-eup palettes! Thanks to Marc
Jacobs, Prada and the rest of the fashpack, brights are back to order. Here,
there are no subtleties: unapologetic
blocks of monochromes kept simple and
slightly raw, and halos of diffused colour
just above the eye socket. The new hi-
look calls for focusing on one feature,
whether its eyes or lips, and one colour
(forget about ombrs and shades of).
Our favourite? Use colour in the negative
spaces for a modern and individual take;
a focus on the inner upper corner of the
eye, or an opaque wash of neon over the
lids as seen at Costello Tagliapietra.

REMOVE any existing nail polish by holding a cotton pad soaked with
acetone-based polish remover over your nail for a few seconds, and swiping
gently. That will also remove the oil build-up on the nail.
FILE THE NAILS in a rounded square shape in a single direction to avoid
splitting. Metal les are abrasive so opt for an emery board, which is much
gentler on the nails. Even out the nail surface by buffi ng the top and sides of the
nail. Over-buffi ng will stop nail polish from adhering. So go easy, unless youre
leaving your nails bare.
CUTICLE CARE is no longer time consuming with the incredible cuticle
removers on the market. Apply and leave on for a few minutes to soften and
prepare for the nipping ahead. Gently push back the cuticle, being careful not to
damage the nail bed in the process. Only cut off the excess edges, without pulling
or lifting.
WASH AND DRY HANDS to remove leftover product before applying a
layer of base coat that will prevent staining the nails. This will also increase
the staying power of the polish.
REST your hand on a at surface when applying a thin white line on the tips.
Correct and perfect with a small pointed brush dipped in acetone.
FINISH off with two coats of sheer pink and a good top coat to protect your
polish, and to give a gorgeous shine.

@ELLEmagazineSA: Winter often results in skin
feeling dry and tight, so changing moisturiser is often
necessary. Opt for a richer cream that has additional
hydrating power if your skin needs extra water. If your
skin feels parched, then use a dry oil before your normal
moisturiser. An excellent option is to layer your daily
product with a serum. Serums feel light but are super
concentrated so your skin will get that extra boost.

@MEGDANIJOSE: SHOULD I
CHANGE MY MOISTURISER AS
THE SEASONS CHANGE?
BEAUTY
hen you Google make-up-free celebrities, more than
22 100 000 results pop up, documenting long lists of
blogs, websites and newspaper headlines dedicated to
the monitoring of female celebrities and their beauty
successes and failures. The rhetoric oscillates between praise and
denigration, depending on how well she can pull off the natural look,
but the very existence and popularity of such a notion make this litany
problematic to begin with. Why is it newsworthy that Oprah went
shopping without make-up?
Unfortunately this ideology is the product of the unrealistic
expectations that are placed on celebrities. Our skewed ideas that
female celebrities need to maintain their performance faces at all times
have resulted in an impossible, arguably, self-imposed beauty standard
on the rest of us. It implies that in order to be perceived as beautiful
and acceptable, wearing make-up is the rule, and a clean face is the
scrutinised exception. This prejudice isnt new. The Second and Third
Wave feminist movements have been concerned with the literal
and gurative assault on womens bodies since the 1960s.
Are we there yet? Have women arrived at the promised
land of being free to be our authentic selves without
the perpetual gaze that society, which were a part
of, has on womens looks? According to a New York
Times article that calls a new wave (in New York
social and fashion circles) of not wearing makeup The New Beauty Standard, we might not
be far off.
Stars without make-up is the smut
that makes up tabloid fodder, feeding the
esteem of ordinary people by deliberately
chastising celebrities for looking like people,
like us. Celebrities are caught without
make-up, as if they have done something
wrong. Its a notion that has progressed
into a new form of coming out on social
media. The victims of our judgement, in
the quasi-confessional frames of Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter, post make-up-free seles
in exchange for likes or in some cases, a slew of cyber
stoning from disapproving followers.
Its one thing to be photographed by paparazzi on
your way to the beach sans make-up, its another for a
celebrity to post a sele with no make-up, but theres something
a little humble braggy about adding the #nomakeup hashtag. In
that precarious space between self-confidence and narcissism, it
runs the risk of being all about pulling off the no make-up look
rather than a powerful statement of self-condence in protest against
the ridiculous standards women are subjected to.
The #nomakeupselfie trend took Britain and subsequently the
virtual world by storm in May when more than 8 million was raised
for cancer research and awareness. Thousands of women all over
the internet, including celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, posted sans
make-up seles onto social networks. Some donated money along

WHO AM I?
My illustrious house Lancme introduces Absolue
LExtrait in 2012: a skin elixir that contains almost
two million Lancme Rose native cells for a madeto-measure approach to beauty. Twenty years of
research culminate to offer women the ultimate skin
regeneration, and 2014 unveils a new chapter.
I am for the eyes what my sister is for the skin, a
highly concentrated and luxurious balm that will
restore radiance and turn back time around your
delicate eye area.
FAMILY CONNECTIONS
Our family prides itself in being an iconic
brand that has pioneered beauty, skincare,
perfume and make-up. After all, we have
been listening to women since 1935. We
are visionaries, creating products that
provide performance, while celebrating
women and their beauty. From the most
luminous of foundations and delicately
feminine shades of lipsticks, to absolutely
addictive fragrances and cutting-edge

THE HERO
The Lancme Rose was created
by Georges Delbard in 1973,
born out of the multi-hybridisation
of 2 000 crossbreedings and four
years of experimenting in extreme
climatic conditions to evaluate its
capacities. The Rose stem cells are
extracted through Fermogenesis
and are at the heart of Absolue
LExtrait. Can you believe that each
jar contains up to two million stem
cells? These beauties work on both
the dermal and epidermal layers
of the skin to regenerate like never
before.

A mini trampoline adds another

On my never-ending quest to find new

across Time Magazines list of 12 foods
that make you eat less.
The two that were most
interesting to me were
apples and avocados,
both of which I eat
regularly. But, its not
just about eating them;
its about when you eat
them. An apple eaten
around 30 minutes before a meal will
fill you up thanks to the fibre and water
content*, so youre less likely to overeat
with the meal that follows. And if you add
half an avo to your lunchtime meal, youre
22 percent less likely to snack for the rest
of the day (until around dinner time). Im
definitely planning to try these theories
out. For more #FitNotes and to read

The study is where the couple spends
most of their time. Its cosiness and livedin nature are enhanced by the layered

Possibly the ELLE Belles favourite hotel in SA, the grand old
dame affectionately known as the Nellie is all old-world charm
with modern-day luxuries. Located in the heart of Cape Town,
at the base of Table Mountain and at the top of the Companys

gardens are sprawling and attentively manicured and the service
is outstanding.
If you cant afford a sleepover: The Mount Nelson is

VICHYSSOISE
This is what I like to call a shy potato

and leek soup of my childhood, which my
mother used to make for us during cold
winter days. Then this was served warm,
but typically, as I learned later in my life,
the real Vichyssoise is traditionally served
cold. For cold winter nights serve warm; for
sunny spring lunches serve cold equally
good both ways.

how to... SEW ON A BUTTON
with Rachel Gilbert, designer and owner of Rachel Gilbert
Youre racing out the door when the top button of your Country Road shirt
pops off, revealing more skin than is appropriate by anyones standards.
Dont panic; heres how to fix it, fast.
TIP 1 Feed about 60cm of thread through a needle and knot both ends.
This prevents the dreaded unravelling of the thread mid-repair and
doubles its thickness for extra strength.
TIP 2 Place the button over the original buttons position, then push the
needle through the back of the fabric towards the front. Return the needle
through the adjacent hole in the button.
TIP 3 Check that the button is aligned with the hole on the opposite side of
the shirt.
TIP 4 Push the needle through three or four more times.
TIP 5 On the last rep, push the needle up through the fabric and loop it
tightly around the bridge between the button and the shirt five times (this
is the secret to the button staying on).
TIP 6 Push the needle back through and knot it tightly.

KINK
how to... BUY A SEX TOY
with Trish Knight, consultant for Pash Parties
Everyone has a happy place why be embarrassed about how you get there? Know
how to buy the right bedroom companion and youll never look back.
TIP #1 Do your research. There are millions of sex toys on the market and the
choice can be overwhelming. Shopping online lets you read reviews, compare prices
and learn each ones functionality. Try lolamontez.co.za or honeyhoney.co.za.
TIP #2 Start small. For first timers, a bullet is a nice, small, unobtrusive way to
start experimenting theyre also great for foreplay and use on external erogenous
zones. More advanced? The infamous Rabbit is great for dual action, while different
shaped wands hit the (G) spot for many.
TIP #3 Check for a warranty. No one likes to open a box to find a dud product
thats non-refundable. Pay for one that comes with a 12-month guarantee.
TIP #4 Demand quality. Your lady bits deserve the best: seek out toys that are
easy to clean and made from phthalate-free, non-porous materials. On that note, be
sure to buy cleaners that have antibacterial properties and are intended for use in
intimate areas (my favourite is the Splash Toy cleaner).

LAST WORD
Visit Emilys blog at
www.iheartyouroutfit.com
Shelves of perfect tees,
skinny pants in variations
of black, an array of
smart Balmain jackets,
spike-heeled boots and
a vintage fur or two. All
that, plus a healthy dose
of chic French nonchalance,
and thats Emily PettitCoetzees aspirant
wardrobe summed up.
ts a pared-down, understated tribute
to my current style icon, Emmanuelle
Alt, who has, over the last few months,
inspired me to rethink my wardrobe
and go in search of my own
fashion uniform.
I like to think this editor of Paris Vogue
and I have lots in common. We both
enjoy a skinny jean, we make liberal
use of the bro tuck, and we love a smart
jacket. Alt is also a mother and
successfully manages to juggle
that and the demands of a highpowered job, while looking chic
and well put together at all times.
Clearly if we met, we would be
best friends.
Midway through my 30s I came
to the realisation that chasing
at the heels of fashions next big
thing is not the way to build a
lasting wardrobe. Rather late in
life, Ill admit. But having become more
comfortable with my own style I now find
myself passing up trends in order to stick
to what I feel and look best in. Its partly
financial, partly the culmination of age
and experience and partly practical.
Having had two babies in two years
Ive watched my previous way of life go
up in smoke (along with my body) and
came to the conclusion that it was time to
pick an aspirational style icon to help me
through this fashion wilderness. Whereas
I once got up in the morning, dressed
myself and went to work, I now have
multiple roles that I have to fill. Early
mornings are spent chasing, dressing,
feeding and prepping two little ones as
well as myself in record time. I need to
wear something versatile enough to drop
my daughter off at her farm school, which
is muddy and where all other mothers
appear to have wardrobes that consist
only of gymwear and appropriately
donned Hunter boots. My outfit needs
to carry me through to a chic office
environment and then back to being a
mama, while I simultaneously work from
home and attempt to hit deadlines in
between supper and the pyjama run.
A simple but chic wardrobe, like that
of Mme Alt (albeit not at Balmain heavy),
allows me to swap the killer heels for boots
when I leave the office for playschool,
another thing, but now that I have my
fashion icon, I am sticking with her.
A style icon is a personal thing.
The term is tossed around like an old
handbag, but when it comes down to it,
one persons icon is anothers old hat.
Yes, there are Audrey, Marilyn, Jackie O
and of course, Mademoiselle Coco the
names that always spring to mind when
you mention the phrase. But they have
earned their stripes by mastering a style
that has proven to be as timeless and
relevant to the 1950s housewife as it is
to the modern businesswoman. Todays
icons still have to stand that particular
test of time and we are proving to be a
fickle bunch.
I think Im going to stick to my Altfits,
smug in the knowledge that my wardrobe
is finally, exactly where I want it to be.

and take off the jacket and throw on a
cardi when its time to start dinner and
twirl around the lounge to the theme tune
from Frozen. Low-key pieces worn with
confidence this is the key. Whether I
have the savoir-faire to pull it off is clearly

DISCERNING
STYLE AND
INNOVATION!
Television has never enjoyed a more pivotal role
in our lives than it does now just look at the
amount of social media that focuses on popular
programming! And as television sets become
design features, theyre moving out of the cabinet
and into our living space. Samsungs Curved UHD
TV is the perfect example the television is now a
beautiful focal point in any room.
As home entertainment reaches new heights, state-of-the-art
technology, design, picture quality and sound have become integral
components of an incredible, unmatched broadcasting opportunity.

to-life leisure experience available the art of the cinema meets
household comfort, in a spectacular fashion. Its the ultimate in
functional design.
The lounge has become the centre of family downtime and the
home cinema has replaced the TV of old. With this upgrade comes a
spectacular shift in design attitude. The combination of the curve and
Samsungs UHD expertise brings images to life, providing spectacular
colour, breathtaking clarity and enhanced detail. The ability to
automatically adjust the contrast for a greater sense of depth, and

of this luxury item. To maximise the advantages of curved TV,
Samsung developed the optimal curvature which provides the best
image excellence with a viewing distance of three to four metres. It
turns your home cinema into an art gallery, a movie set or a television
studio, and you feel part of the action.
When it comes to decor, colour tells a story whether its just a
pop of colour in an otherwise neutral room, an unexpected show
of statement wallpaper or a muted tone-on-tone layering of
elements. Samsungs PurColour reproduces tones in more detail
and expression the number of shade adjustment points has been
increased sevenfold.
Not only is this a statement of current leading-edge technology,
its an investment in tomorrow too. The Samsung UHD TV provides
the very best in crisp picture quality; four times the resolution and
pixels of Full HD, and all UHD televisions feature UHD Upscaling,
which gives you greater image excellence regardless of the source
material. The proprietary technology converts Full HD, HD and
lower-resolution sources to near UHD picture quality. Samsung UHD
TVs are the only TVs on the market that are future-ready, thanks to
the Samsung UHD Evolution Kit.
Of course, it wouldnt be a Samsung TV if it didnt provide a smart TV
experience. The new Multilink screen allows you to split the screen in
two, allowing you to review player stats, show search results or browse
YouTube while catching the all-important match. And with an upgraded
Quad Core processor, loading and navigation are twice as fast.
Life is all about experiences and the new Samsung Curved UHD TV is
the perfect partner for a family entertainment system that delivers
it all in style.
