Introduction

1.1. Purpose of the Community Connect program

The Community Connect program is designed for the young generation and
is expected to inculcate in them a sense of responsibility towards the society
by helping them understand the most pressing issues of the society. By the
end of this programme, students would:

Be more aware about the social challenges facing India

Be more apathetic towards the society
Be motivated to work towards a society
Have gained experience of working on a real life problem case and
being inspired for working towards a solution

2.

Events

2.1. Manthan
The event is designed with a purpose to instill team spirit and develop skills
to represent different points of views with confidence while facing barbs. The
students would discuss on societys most pressing issues, form opinions in
teams and represent the same in the front of the other team and debate all
the points of views. This would better equip students with self-confidence
and leadership skills.
2.1.1.Themes

The teams are allotted topics on important (local) social issues. Political,
religious or controversial topics are strictly out of purview. The aim of
Manthan is to provide exposure to projects in critical areas of social
development. A case study of existing projects is provided. These are case
studies followed by questions and the identification of important issues to
consider in those scenarios. A typical case study is suggested as follows:
a. An NGO conducted a survey in a town on health and sanitation for women.
They were taken aback to know the statistics about the village. The data
suggested that:
65% of women b/w the age of 15 and 50 didnt use sanitary
napkins.
More than 74% of the total women not using this product in this age
group were not aware of such product
79% of the women were unemployed 91% of who were below
poverty line.

Almost 88% women could not express their thoughts and sufferings
with their mother/ friends nor had confidence to talk to them.
The above survey prompted NGO to work towards the cause of
these women. In teams of five discuss and present on the following:
Q1. Understanding of the problem
Q2. Ask a lot of questions to the instructor pertaining to the same.
Q3. Problems faced
Q4. Solutions suggested
Q5. Justification for a solution
Q6. Implementation of the solution
Q7. Challenges and shortcomings while
Q8. implementing the solution

The team size is typically 4-6 each. These teams can further subdivide among
themselves for segmented approach towards problem to decide subtopics of case
study.
The teams are allotted a time of 60 minutes:
Teams discuss among themselves and come up with answers in stipulated
time. Also, there is a mid bell at around 30 minutes, when the teams are
expected to submit answers to first 4 questions.
At the end of this time the teams come forth and present their ideas and the other 3
teams question them on their structured proposal. The presentation is total for 15
minutes per team. This includes question/answer session. Each team will get marks
for the questions asked by them. Inability to answer the questions will be awarded
negative points.

2.2. Interactive speaker sessions

Various distinguished speaker sessions are organized to enlighten the
students about the social issues. The speakers are from prominent NGOs,
government and educationalists. About 3-4 speakers are invited for the
event.

2.3. Awareness Campaigns

A group of students come up with a plan for implementation of an awareness
campaign. A typical topic would be to create awareness among the local
community about cleanliness. The students are encouraged to come up with
innovative ideas. The final part of the event is to publicize the campaign on
social media and presentation of the idea to other teams. The team scores
on the basis of publicity on social media and points for effective
presentation.

Typical group size would be 10.

All the groups prepare a strategy among themselves for publicizing and
organizing an awareness campaign.
The teams are then given 1 day to come up with the plan and 3 days to
publicize on social media.
Teams would present their final idea on the last day of the program.

Format for the development of the campaign would be provided.

2.4. Video making

Vriksha, in collaboration with Honey Bee Network, aim to contribute
significantly to open source educational content for children. We plan to
develop around 40 video lectures on any topic (any language) for classes
(CBSE 5th to 12th) through this program. Video length could be 310mins and in any language. The students of Guru Nanak college are best
suited for the development of the content and make a difference to the open
source education initiative.
Honey Bee Network, is an initiative of SRISTI (Society for Research and
Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions). SRISTI is a nongovernmental organization set up to strengthen the creativity of grassroots
inventors, innovators and ecopreneurs engaged in conserving biodiversity
and developing eco-friendly solutions to local problems. SRISTI has worked
with the Government of India on different projects.

2.5. Social work

Quoting Mahatma Gandhi - He, who lives in the social group, must have no
aversion to social work, that is, collective prayer - we encourage social work.
We wish to provide a glimpse of the social work to students through a singleday event. A typical event would be a cleanliness drives in public spaces,
such as local railway station or parks. Each team of students would develop
the posters and placards with slogan to create awareness about the issues.
