Effects of Deforestation
Deforestation is a major issue in todays era. In the name of modernization, man has
cut down trees in great numbers that has lead to the destruction of great forests and
the lives of many animals and plant species. We fail to realize that trees are the most
important aspects of our planet and the existence of trees does play a vital role.
They provide homes to many, controls the climatic conditions, prevents soil in
erosions and many more. However, trees have been vanishing at an alarming rate
and it is estimated that, about 50 % of the tree cover has been removed.
There are many causes that have lead to deforestation. One of the main reasons is
the short-term economic benefits. Other reasons may include corruption, population
growth, urbanization, building farms and ranches etc.
Trees are being cut for various purposes and when reforestation is not
happening, the ratio between the cut trees and young trees gets widened thus
resulting in barren lands, which may at times become useful for economic purposes
else, just gets wasted for no reason.
Since deforestation is at an alarming rate, the effect caused by this is also large.
In maintaining the water cycle, trees do contribute in a large way. They draw the
water with the help of their roots and is released into the atmosphere. The rain
forests are a good source of damp air as the water content is present in the
atmosphere. When these trees are being cut, the atmosphere gets drier, thus raising
the temperature levels.
Trees are the best sources to prevent erosion of soil. The roots of trees help to
hold the soil together and also makes the soil very fertile. When trees are being cut
down, the land gets barren and exposed to direct sunlight which leads to drying up
and loss of the nutrients, thus making the land a total waste.
Tropical rainforests are the major source of life in the world with the existence
of a diverse variety of species. With deforestation getting higher, about 50-100
species are getting extinct at an alarming rate and today, we have not seen thousand
of animals and plants that existed ages ago.
Global warming is an issue that is being lately discussed and solutions trying to
be found out. In-fact, man has created such a situation. With trees on the globe, they
help in the absorption of carbon dioxide and release oxygen which maintains a
balance.
However, with the cut down of trees, the content of carbon dioxide has
increased and in the atmosphere resulting in global warming phase. Only a few of
the effects have been discussed here. We all depend on one other for existence and
thus do require plants, animals, and every other life form. Preserving the natural
habitat is the best way of getting back at least some of what we have lost if not all.
As tiny drops of water makes the might ocean, we as individuals should take
small steps to preserve the nature and make its a greener world for the coming
generations. We should remember, trees give us life and without them , it gets difficult
for us to sustain.
