KEEP THINKING
What set Peter Drucker apart from other management teachers and authors was his ability
to keep thinking and to stay sharp past what many would consider old age. He wrote 36
books over 66 years and his books were translated into 30 languages. When he was 88
years old, Forbes magazine featured Drucker on its cover along with the words: Still the
Youngest Mind. Reading and listening are important skills for leaders to cultivate
throughout their lives. But it is thinking and reflecting upon what has been read and
heard that stimulates the mind and keeps it sharp. Outstanding leaders are, therefore,
not complacent when it comes to using the information they gather. They continually look
for ways to stimulate their creativity and problem-solving skills by not just ingesting, but
thoroughly digesting, information. Are you as eager as you should be to write, speak or
teach on topics that interest you and to develop a deeper understanding of the material?
This week, motivate yourself to keep thinking. Dont just let valuable information pass
through your eyes and ears each day without taking time to think and reflect on it. Put
yourself in more situations where you can ask questions about what you read or hear. Join
or start a book club where you can meet with others to discuss books as well as to read
them. Ask yourself after every session of reading or listening: What have I just learned and
can I apply it in my life? The world is filled with people who can perform tasks. Be
unique, like Peter Drucker, stay sharp, and be respected for your contributions well
into your twilight years by developing the habit of always thinking and reflecting
upon what you read and hear.

What Is Luck ? Nothing, but what you make it ..!

Ten years ago, I set out to examine luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in
the right place at the right time, while others consistently experience ill fortune. I carried
out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to differences in their ability to
spot such opportunities.
I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and
tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway
through the newspaper saying:Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win Rs.1 Lac
This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than two
inches high. It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to
miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it. Unlucky people are generally more tenses
than lucky people, and this anxiety disrupts their ability to notice the unexpected. As a
result, they miss opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else.
They go to parties intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make
good friends. They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job
advertisements and miss other types of jobs. Lucky people are more relaxed and open, and
therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for. Research eventually
revealed that lucky people generate good fortune via four principles :
1. They are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities,
2. Make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition,
3. Create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations, and
4. Adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good.
Towards the end of the work, I wondered whether these principles could be used to create
good luck. I asked a group of volunteers to spend amonth carrying out exercises designed
to help them think and behave like a lucky person. These exercises helped them spot
chance opportunities,listen to their intuition, and expect to be lucky, and be more resilient
to bad luck. One month later, the volunteers returned and described what had happened.
The results were dramatic: 80% of people were now happier, more satisfied with their lives
and, perhaps most important of all, luckier. The lucky people had become even luckier and
the unlucky had become lucky. Finally, I had found the elusive "luck factor".
Here are Professor Wiseman's four top tips for becoming lucky:
1. Listen to your gut instinct -they are normally right
2. Be open to new experiences and breaking your normal routine
3. Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well
4. Visualize yourself being lucky before an important meeting or telephone call.
Luck is very often a self-fulfilling prophecy!

11 Rules for Life
Following 11 rules were written by Charles J. Sykes*, best known as the author of "Dumbing
Down Our Kids: Why Children Feel Good about Themselves, but Cant Read, Write, or Add."
Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!
Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to
accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3: You will NOT make Rs. 12 Lacs a year right out of high school. You won't be a
vice-president with a car & cell phone until you earn both.
Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different
word for burger flipping -- they called it opportunity.
Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes,
learn from them.
Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now.They got
that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about
how cool you thought you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of
your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT.
In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY
TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance
to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few
employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the
coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
