The person must prove that their ancestors previously belonged to a Scheduled Caste and be accepted by their caste community. The court ruled that a Kerala man who reconverted to Hinduism from Christianity could be granted SC status for the caste his ancestors originally belonged to.

Therehasbeenreconversiontotheoriginalreligiontowhichtheparentsandearliergenerationshadbelonged

grantedSCcertificateofHinduPulayacastetowhichhisancestorsbelonged.
However,lateronacomplaint,ascrutinycommitteeheldthathecannotbetreatedasaHinduonthegroundthathisforefatherswereChristiansand
hehimselfhadmarriedaChristianwoman.KeralaHighCourtalsogaveitsrulinginfavourofscrutinycommitteeandagainstthePetitioner.
Onthebasisofthereportofthescrutinycommittee,theKeralagovernmentdirectedtheemployerofManutoremovehimfromserviceandrecovera
sumof15lakhrupeestowardsthesalarypaidtohim.
