ENGLISH FOR TOURISM
TOPIC READING
Bali has many great beaches - good for swimming, surfing, or just lounging on the sand.
Some hotels and villages provide daily clean up and grooming of beaches. Also, the quality
of a beach can change drastically between seasons, depending on the location of the beach
and the direction it faces. Bali's beaches are best during the dry season, from about April to
October. During this period at beaches on the western coastal areas, such as Kuta, Seminyak,
Legian, Canggu and Jimbaran, erosion is minimal and the lack of wind or offshore winds
keep the beaches clean and relatively calm. During the wet season, onshore winds deposits
flotsam and garbage on the west facing beaches and constant clean up is needed. In addition
heavy rains can deposit runoff around the beaches, particularly around run-off streams that
flow into the ocean. Nusa Dua and Sanur beaches are less affected by seasonality, although
the beach strip from the Melia Hotel to Nusa Dus Beach Hotel experiences seasonal erosion
in the winter, resulting in a very narrow strip of sand. The sand returns for the summer
months. The west facing beach from Cangu to Kuta can have rough surf and is known to have
many rip currents and strong undertow. Safe swim areas are marked by flags and lifeguards
are posted in some places. Both Mengiat at Nusa Dua and Sanur areas are nice because there
is an offshore reef that keeps heavy surf away from the beach. Occasional rough surf is the
down side of the Kuta/Legian/Seminyak beach.

Guide:
It's about a three minute ride up to the top of the mountain. As we pass the two towers the
gondolla may sway a little.
Tourist 1:
This thing is safe, right?
Guide:
Yes, you don't have anything to worry about. We do about 100 trips a day up the mountain,
and these tours have been going on for over ten years without any accidents. Keep your eyes
open for wildlife as we ascend. It isn't uncommon to see deer and even bears.
Tourist 2:
What's that mountain to the left called?
Guide:
That's Mount Suur Karu. And to the right of that with the three small points is Mount
Roheline. Now, if you look up straight ahead, you should be able to see a large eagle's nest.
Does everyone see it there?
Tourist 1:
Are there any baby birds?
Guide:
That's a good question. I haven't seen any yet, but we usually see them around this time of
year.
Tourist 2:
What's that lake down there, to the right of the green meadow?
Guide:
I'm glad you asked. That's Johannes Lake. It's actually a man made pond that was built as part
of a conservation effort over twenty years ago. During the 70's there was a lot of clearcutting
of forests in the area, and much of the wildlife was lost. Since Johannes Lake was built,
ducks, swans, and geese have returned to the area.
Tourist 1:
Is this the highest mountain in this region?
Guide:
No, actually, Mount Pikk, which you we will be able to see in just a minute or so has the
highest peak. But, this is the highest mountain for recreational purposes like skiing and
guided tours.
Tourist 2:
Can you ski throughout the year?
Guide:
No, actually, Mount Pikk, which you we will be able to see in just a minute or so has the
highest peak. But, this is the highest mountain for recreational purposes like skiing and
guided tours.
Tourist 2:
Can you ski throughout the year?
Guide:
No, it warms up enough to actually suntan up there in the summer. Oh, look everyone. There
are two deer feeding in the clearing right below us.
Tourist 1:
Thanks, that should be a great photo. So... what is there to do besides ski at the top of the hill
at this time of year?
Guide:
Oh, there's plenty to do. We have horseback riding, snowmobile tours, and a petting zoo for
children. If you look to your left you'll see the snowmobile trail going through the mountain.

The largest of the three islands, Gili Trawangan attracts the majority of visitors, it is around
thirty minutes boat ride from the northwest mainland of Lombok and regular daily fast boats
depart Bali directly to Trawangan island and all boats stop off at Teluk Nare on mainland
Lombok as part of the return journey.
The beaches of the Gilis are still powdery white, the water a beautiful clear blue and they are
positioned perfectly for sunsets over Balis Mt Agung and sunrise over Lomboks Mt
Rinjani. Thirty years ago the Gili islands were uninhabited and only discovered by the
seafaring Bugis people from Sulawesi. It was only a matter of time before the more
adventurous backpacker types discovered the islands and developed Trawangan into a hippy
party paradise destination.
Gili Trawangan now identifies itself as a great holiday destination suitable for families of all
ages. Various new hotels, luxury villas, and boutique bungalows now cater to children and
