The Cleansing Power of the Blood
Modern science proves that the Bible is true and of high scientific standard. Leviticus 17:11 says:
"For the life of the flesh is in the blood..." (this was written about two thousand years B.C.) and there
are a large number of scriptures which taught God's people to respectfully consider life as God's
gift.
It was only in 1615 A.D. that William Harvey discovered the system of blood circulation within the
body, and only in the last 30 years have people come to a full knowledge of what the Word of God
teaches about blood. It is now known that the heartbeat and other functions of the heart are set in
motion by blood circulation, and as the Bible says, this is the very principle of how to preserve life.
The heart is only the pump and its job can be taken over by a machine. However, when the blood
is no longer being pumped to the life-essential organs, death occurs. Therefore, "the life of the flesh
is in the blood."
In God's plan of redemption, blood acts as the atonement for the souls of mankind. The shedding
of blood on the altar maintained the connection to God when sin had been committed by the
people. This points to the night when Jesus said: "For this is my blood of the new testament, which is
shed for many for the remission of sins." (MATT 26:28). The blood on the altar only covered the sin of
the people. It did not take their sin away, neither did it enable the people to conquer sin in their
lives (HEB 10:3,4). "How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" (HEB 9:14).
Human blood cleanses the body in the same way as the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from
the plague of sin. Modern science has made it possible to transfuse blood from a healthy person to
a person with the same blood group to save his life. In order to save life, blood must first be
transfused and then be accepted by the body. Likewise, as Jesus shed His blood on the cross we
have to receive His saving blood in our souls through faith - which is reflected in taking "bread and
cup". The human blood gives us a wonderful picture of what the life-giving blood of Jesus Christ
accomplishes in a believer.
Viewed under a microscope, the blood cells reflect the body's state of health. In a healthy body the
blood cells have to exist in the correct number, structure, and colour. The blood conveys nutrition
to all parts of the body, and millions of cells clean the body from metabolic products 2-3 times per
minute. There are different kinds of blood cells, each with its own purpose. One type protects the
body from bacteria, the other removes damaged tissue and helps the thickening of the blood so
that in case of an accident it minimises the loss of blood. The blood carries nutrients from the
digestive organs and oxygen from the lungs to the cells in the body.
You can find bacteria everywhere; on the skin, in the nose, in the throat and in the mouth. In the
event of an accident, bacteria will enter the body through the broken skin or tissue. This leads to
infection and poisonous toxins entering into the body, which can damage many of the life-essential
organs. Then only the cleansing power of the blood can save us.

"THE CLEANSING POWER OF THE BLOOD"
If human blood is so wonderful, how much more wonderful will the Blood of Jesus Christ be, which
cleanses every second of the day!
Sin is an illness of the soul, attacking the thoughts and imaginations, contaminating the mind,
weakening the will, hardening one's conscience, and stopping spiritual activity. The lustful desire to
sin hardens the heart, just as bacteria brings about infections of the cardiac valves, causing death.
Sin is infectious and contagious and pollutes society. If it is not being held back, it will spread like
an epidemic. A look at the newspapers shows that it spreads throughout all classes of society, and
that there is no possible way for mankind to free itself from the power of sin. "For though thou wash
thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord GOD."
(JER 2:22).
The Lord Jesus Christ is the only remedy for the illness of sin. In the same way that we trust in the
cleansing power of human blood, we trust in the Blood of Jesus Christ which frees the soul from
sin over and over again just as human blood frees the body of infection.
Have you found the cleansing of your sins by the precious Blood of Jesus Christ, and the spiritual
life which only He can give, by receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, with the promise of eternal life?
by Arthur D. Lucas (Hounslow/England)
