21.1 INTRODUCTION
IT refers to anything related to computing technology, such as networking, hardware,
software, the internet, or the people that work with these technologies. Many companies now have
IT departments for managing the computers, networks, and other technical areas of their businesses.
IT jobs include computer programming, network administration, computer engineering, web
development, technical support, and many other related occupations. Since we live in the
nformation ageinformation technology has greatly become a part of our daily lives.
Businesses' information technology departments have gone from using storage tapes
created by single computer operator to interconnected networks of employee workstations that store
information in a server farm, often somewhere away from the main business site. The advancement
of the IT sector has resulted in automated:
Administration of entire systems.
Production and manipulation of sensitive information.
Cultural development and communication
Streamlining of business processes and timely upgrades.
In India, the IT industry has recorded an immense growth over the last decade. The
software sector in India has grown at almost double the rate of the US software sector. India is now
home to a number of IT giants. It is a field where the barrier to entry is generally much lower than
that of manufacturing to service industries. The operations of IT firms like Wipro, Infosys,
Accenture, Capgemini, Tata Consultancy Services and many more in different locations of India have
changed the entire scenario of the Indian job market.
One of the most remarkable effects of India's IT boom is the expansion of employment
opportunities. In India, the state of Kerala has proved to be one of the steady growing IT hubs in the
country with more number students opting for jobs in the IT field and more number of investments
happening in the IT sector. Today more number of people are getting attracted towards the IT
sectors because of the good pay scale, incentives and work status provided. Kerala today has
changed a great deal with the aid of IT which has penetrated almost every aspect of our daily lives
and society, from leisure to business.hardware and software developers, computer programmers, web
designers, system analyst and various other job profiles have been created in d state as a result of IT.
Among the people benefited with employment opportunities in Kerala, we see a large
number of women IT professionals. The number of women IT professionals in the state has been
growing steadily for a constant period of time. The IT job market has attracted many women
workers with their job benefits and higher levels of positions offered to younger women in the
industry. They are given almost equal pay and incentives as their male peers and find it easier to grow
with their career in the IT field.
Though this has been the case, we have been seeing a slight variation to this trend in the
past few years. A large number of IT professionals, mostly women, are now switching over to other
jobs because they find it difficult to work in such an environment. This project study focuses mainly
on the working environment and the job satisfaction level of women IT professionals in Kochi.

1.2 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Information Technology has brought about significant improvements to the lives of
people today in various aspects. One of the main benefits that IT has brought about in India as a
whole and particularly in Kerala is the number of job opportunities it has provided. The evolution of
the IT sector has reduced the situation of unemployment in the state to a great extent. It has attracted
younger and fresher minds into the industry with high offers of pay scale, incentives and much more.
The students are offered jobs right after they are done with their studies with most of the IT
companies coming into the colleges and conducting campus recruitments. Since the IT field is one of
the most competitive job markets today, a large number of women are also benefited by the job
opportunities in this sector. Women are mainly attracted by the higher pay scale, job security and
better designations. They find it easier to grow faster in their careers in the IT field. With the number
of women IT professionals increasing within the state, the demand for women IT professionals have
increased and more girl students have been getting into IT related studies.
But even then, most of them find it difficult to work in such an environment. Since the
working environment is not that satisfactory, women are now switching over to other jobs regardless
of whether their new job profile is better or not. This project is going to analyze the working
environment and the job satisfaction level of women IT professionals with respect to Kochi.
