ELE 3101: ENGLISH FOR UNDERGRADUATES

REFLECTION
Name: Afrah Izzati Abdullah

Class: T2SN2

First of all, I want to thank God because me and my group had completed and settled all
the assignments given. All the assignments are done in group of three and are divided
to three parts, which are Task 1, Task 2 and task 3
Question in task 1 need me and my group to find the information about literary genre
and literary devices. The first thing that pop-up from my head is, what is literary genre
and what are literary devices? I have heard before but maybe because it is too long
after I left my secondary school and make me forget about that. After searching the
information about the literary genre and literary devices, then I knew what the
differences between them are.
Literary devices can be divided into two: elements and techniques. Literary elements
are used to analyze and interpret such as setting, plot, and theme and so on. These
make the short story more arrange able and make reader feel more excited to read the
story. The literary techniques are the constructions in the text that express the artistic
meaning through the use of language. Examples are metaphor, hyperbole and so on.
These elements make the story looks more real because writer can create an
imagination in readers mind based on what the writer want.
While literary genre also can be categorized into two; non-fiction which is a narrative
literary whose content is produced by imagination such as fairy tales, fable, short story
and so on. The fiction is an informational text with an actual real-life subject. Now, I
really understand the differences between literary genres and literary devices. I always
found these kinds of items when reading novels or short story but I dont know what kind
of elements they are.
In task 2, our group got the short story titled snow goose. Honestly, I like snow goose.
Simple, but has deep meaning inside the story. When I read this story, I found the word
and sentences that used literary devices such as similes, metaphor and personification.
The important thing that I have learnt here is about similes. What I learnt and know

before, similes is any expression that contain words such as like and as. But actually it
is a form of comparison in which one thing is compared to another unlike thing by using
specific words of comparison like like, as, and resembles. Yes, it used word as and like
but not all sentences that contain words like and as are similes. Here are some
examples in short story snow goose that I think it is a similes, but actually it is not. She
acts like a bird thats never been away. In he sailed, like a man out sailing on a Sunday
afternoon. The sentences here not categorized as similes because it does not compare
the subject with concrete thing. Luckily I met madam Kala before I presented this short
story to the class. Thanks a lot I wish to madam Kala for corrected my mistake and have
changed my thinking about similes.
In task 3, me and my group have to write a short story and displayed it in the form of
big book. This task is quiet challenging me because I am not a creative person actually
and I have to work hard and try my best so that the big book is interesting and look
beautiful. Our group has chosen short story entitled The Baby Elephant Finds Banana
Seeds. This story is interesting because there is a science element inside the story. Big
book is one of the useful teaching aids that can help students understand more about
some topics. not only a simple short story but science, math short story also can
represented in the form of big book so that student feel excited to study. What I learnt
from the process of making big book are so useful so that I can teach my student how to
make big book and share with them an interesting and great short story.
Last but not least, the tasks given give me a lot of experience and more new
information about the world of poetry and short story. The information make me my
understanding about literary devices and genres more better.
