Ontario County Historical Society new exhibit!

19th Century Transportation in Ontario County
How do we get there from here?

This ago-old question motivated people in New York to develop and utilize
transportation systems from footpaths, rivers and roads, to canals and
railroads. In the 1800s, these systems moved settlers and travelers, raw
materials, agricultural and manufactured products from farms and villages
to cities across the region and country. Transportation links helped create
regional economies, and impacted land use and development.
In this exhibit we will look at how modes of transportation contributed to
the development of the Ontario County region from 1750 to 1900. These
early modes of transportation shaped the settlement patterns in our county
that are still with us today.
The exhibit will present images and artifacts of the steam boats, canal boats,
horse drawn carriages, early bicycles, and the origins of rail transportation
in the county. Several Programs related to the exhibit are planned.
Details of these programs are on the calendar at the museums web site
www.ochs.org. There is something for every member of the family to enjoy
including a local history book shop, a genealogical research library and a
great information table.

The Ontario County Historical Society is located at 55 North Main Street in Canandaigua. Museum Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10:00am-4:30pm,
Wednesdays until 9:00pm, Saturday 11:00am-3:00pm. Admission is free. Donations are accepted. For more information visit www.ochs.org or call 585 394-4975.

Ontario Pathways
The Trail is a 23-mile rails-to-trails project
located in Ontario County. The Trail is
composed of two "legs" that connect
Canandaigua, Stanley, Seneca Castle,
Orleans and Phelps/Clifton Springs.
The trail is open to the public year round
for hiking, bicycling, horseback riding,
and cross-country skiing. No motorized
vehicles allowed. No charge for use of
the trail.
The Ontario Pathways trail is built on
abandoned railroad beds. This makes it
mostly flat with only gentle hills except
for a couple of detours around private
property. The surface is primarily grass
with a bare single track of packed cinders
down the center. In heavily wooded areas
the grass is shaded out leaving just the
packed cinders. For bicycling a mountain
bike or hybrid is preferred over a skinny
tire road bike.
Ontario Pathways, Inc. is a private,
non-profit organization with over 300
members. The organization owns,
develops and maintains the trail property
on a volunteer basis. There are no paid
employees. Funding for preservation of
the land and development of the trail
has been raised by the organization via
memberships, fund drives, fund-raising
events and donations from private
individuals, organizations and businesses.

16th Annual Highlander Cycle Tour
The annual Highlander Cycling Tour. The
rides are located in the scenic and hilly
Finger Lakes region of upstate New York
around the time of wine festivals and
the beginning of fall foliage. The ride
options include two 100 mile centuries,
a challenging century with big climbs,
what was originally called the highlander,
and a less challenging century, that
avoids the big climbs and originally
was called the Lowlander, an off-road
mountain ride and an easy set of three
courses ranging from 11 to 41 miles to
suit a wide range of abilities. Despite the
variety of ride routes, they are designed
to share common sections so that cyclists
on different rides can ride together and
have common experiences. Tour routes
take riders along lake shores, up hill tops
with wide vistas, along scenic valleys,
and wander through several small towns
and hamlets. The Finger Lakes is a wine
growing region and the route goes past

many vineyards, usually located on east

facing hillsides. The Tour is a charity event
with proceeds above expenses donated to
charities. For more information, visit www.

Chapter has organized this for the purpose

of promoting outdoor recreation. The
goal is to provide a single place where

what organizations are available and
what they do, meet people with similar
interests, attend over 70 workshops aimed
at these interests and have fun!
Local outdoor clubs and vendors are
welcome to come set up a table, booth or
tent or do a demonstration. Anything they
have to offer is pretty much fair game.
Past years have included such things as
hang gliders, hot air balloons and gliders.
The Expo has grown each year, both
in size and attendance, based mainly
on feedback from the attendees and
participants. This year we have over 60
different organizations providing over 70
workshops,! Popular are workshops such
as map & compass, hiking opportunities

get outdoors and take a hike

on one of these area trails
BY Jennifer Barlow | messenger post media

The Rochester Museum and Science Center's Cummings Nature Center.

Hiking around the Finger Lakes can be a quiet,

beautiful experience or it can turn into a great
adventure! Throughout the area there are many
natural treasures. Personally, I have found two
amazing areas to take in the beauty of the Finger
Lakes. Rochester Museum & Science Center
Cumming Nature Center and Victor Hiking Trails
are perfect for both tourists visiting our area and
the families who have lived here for years.
Cumming Nature Center
The Rochester Museum & Science Center
Cumming Nature Center is a 900-acre preserve
located in the Finger Lakes region near the
village of Naples. There are six miles of hiking
trails that wind through the forest and wetlands.
Hikers can use the trails while checking out the
variety of local bird species and appreciating the
beautiful greenery. The trails are well groomed
for hiking each season. Visit in the fall to
witness the changing of the leaves or attempt
snowshoeing in the winter.
The winter months offer 15 miles of trails for
cross-country skiing or a three mile loop trail for
the snowshoeing enthusiast. The center is not
just for adults but also caters to the little ones
who love playing outside. They can enjoy Leap
Frog Pond, a make-believe pond filled with frogs,
turtles, lily pads and much more. Visitors should
bring lunch to enjoy at the visitors center, where
they can reflect on the scenery and experiences
of the day.
For more information about the Cumming Nature
Center please visit www.rmsc.org.

Victor Hiking Trails

There are many hiking trails throughout the
Finger Lakes Region, but Victor offers a treasure
known throughout the state. Victor Hiking Trails
covers part of Monroe and Ontario Counties.
Trail lovers conducted an exploratory meeting
back in 1991 to discuss how to develop a trail
system that would preserve wide open space
and provide an educational and recreational
experience for residents and tourists in the Town
of Victor.
Today, there are more than 30 miles of open
trails available for nature exploration. These
include connected multi-use rails-to-trails,
secluded woodland rambles, biking trails,
stream sidewalks and longer cross-town hiking
trails for those who love adventure.
Children, and adults alike, especially love riding
bicycles on the trails and crouching along the
streams in search of salamanders and crayfish.
Benches and logs are sprinkled throughout the
trails for hikers to sit and rest and to take in the
bird songs or even just appreciate the breeze
blowing through the trees. Hikers may even
come across deer by the stream or on the path.
It is a peaceful place to relax and take in the
beauty of nature.
Some of the trails connect to other town and
state parks, while some exist on their own, as
trails. The Victor Chamber of Commerce and Town
of Victor take pride in this natural attraction for
visitors and their every day enjoyment.
For more information on these hiking trails
please visit www.victorhikingtrails.org.

Victor Hiking Trails cover part of Monroe and Ontario counties.

Phelps Sauerkraut Festival

"Magic of Kraut" July 31 - August 2
The planning committee for the 2015
Phelps Sauerkraut Weekend is in full
swing preparing for this years event!
Building off the improvements made last
year, the planning committee, supported
by many community organizations
including the Phelps Fire Department,
the Phelps Chamber and the American
Legion, is working diligently to add new
and exciting events as well as improve old
festival favorites to bring the community
of Phelps a bigger and better Sauerkraut
Weekend! The weekend promises
something for everyone! For more
information visit http://phelpsny.com/
sauerkraut-weekend!

Floss Sauerkraut Company (now Great

Lakes Kraut Company a part of Agrilink,
Inc.) and Birds Eye Foods. 2013 saw the
reformation of the Phelps Sauerkraut
Weekend committee. Again composed of
community organizations, they expanded
the festival into a village-wide four day
event which includes the Mustang Rally of
the Finger Lakes at the Phelps Community
Center, Arts in the Park in Methodist
Memorial Park on Main Street, Public
Market Place in the downtown, events
at the American Legion and of course
carnival rides and community booths at
the carnival site on Ontario Street.

History of Sauerkraut in Phelps

The Seneca Sauerkraut Factory, located at

the west end of Main Street, was sold to
Seneca Foods, Waterloo and the building
was demolished in December 1994.
The Silver Floss/Empire State Pickling
Company, located on Eagle Street,
Phelps was sold to Curtis-Burns Inc. of
Rochester September 1965. It was then
sold to Comstock Foods. Canning ended
in 1985, but cutting continued in Phelps
and eventually went to Shortsville and
Gorham.

The Phelps Sauerkraut Festival began

in 1967 with a one-day program (The
Home of Silver Floss Sauerkraut). The
Phelps Chamber of Commerce started
the Sauerkraut Festival because Phelps
was one of the largest producers of
sauerkraut in the world. Eventually, a
committee made up of members from the
community and community organizations
took over the various aspects of this
festival with the support of the Silver

Sauerkraut Factories

Ontario County offers it all

Ontario County is a picturesque
region filled with rolling hills,
pristine waters, quaint towns,
history, recreation and adventure.
It is the heart of the Finger
Lakes Region and a premiere
destination spot for year-round,
remarkable exploration. It is
home to a myriad of activities
and attractions, antiques stores
and shopping. Inspiring galleries
exhibiting artistry, craftworks
and entrepreneurship can also
be found. Theaters, music, and
a variety of museums showcase
local culture.
Internationally recognized, and
voted the most beautiful wine
region in the world by Budget
Travel magazines 2010 Readers Choice Awards, the wine trails are open year-round for
tasting and touring. According to newyorkwinerytours.com, New York is the nations second
largest producer of wine, and the Finger Lakes region has some of the finest vineyards. This
acclaim shows in their award-winning wines that you can sample and purchase on the
wine trails. Locally the New York Wine and Culinary Center is a wonderful place to sample
local wines and beers, take a hands-on cooking course, watch demonstrations and dine
on local flavor.
Known for some of the state's best natural scenery, Ontario Countys striking beauty can
be experienced through the numerous state parks, forests, lakes, cascading waterfalls and
deep gorges, miles of shoreline and nature centers. Experience the beautiful hiking and
biking trails and great fishing. Whether you desire camping, golfing, multi-use trails, or
just picnicking on the shore, this glacial sculpted area is an outdoor-lovers paradise.
The countryside of Ontario County is full of farms and orchards yielding a bounty of flavor
to taste, pick and enjoy. In the summer season, numerous farmstands are overflowing with
fresh produce, baked goods, plants and flowers.
The town of Naples, known as Grape Country to residents, brings forth a succulent dessert
treasure known as grape pie. People come from far and wide to delight in this unique treat.

This famous dessert is also featured

at the Naples Grape Festival, which
brings thousands together each
year to celebrate the fruit of the
land.
With hundreds of registered historic
sites and landmarks, this is a region
rich in history and heritage. Native
Americans named this area The
Chosen Place, for its lush land, and
abundance of natural resources.
Later, slaves found freedom through
many of the Underground Railroad
stations throughout the area, and
the early roots of the Womens
Rights movement formed here
as well. Explore another piece of
historical past at the Ganondagan
State Historical Site, home of a
vibrant Native American village from 300 years ago. Tour the site, walk the trails, and learn
about the days gone by for this previous Seneca community.
Ontario County hosts a multitude of special events throughout the year. Annual fairs and
festivals abound. From wine to music, art to agriculture, dance to religion, cars, boats,
and food, there is an event for every taste, pleasure, and interest. The Ontario County
Fair celebrates everything that makes our community special! 2015 will mark the 172nd
anniversary of the fair. Dedicated to the promotion of better agriculture, better industry
and better education of todays youth, fun at the fair is always a top priority and good
food, fun carnival rides, live music and entertainment are around every corner. The famous
Historic Hill Cumorah Pageant is one of the oldest outdoor pageants in America that
tells the story of how the Mormon religion began. The Phelps Sauerkraut festival is all
about sauerkraut, with savoring smells and flavor. The Pageant of Steam in Canandaigua
celebrates everything tractor and farm related. The popular Finger Lakes Riesling Festival
brings area wineries, restaurants, artists and musicians together for a weekend long
celebration of what inspires this region.
When you are done exploring the regions wonderful offerings, there is never a lack of
respite in Ontario County. From resorts and country inns, to cozy bed and breakfasts, to
historic hotels and lakefront restaurants, Ontario County is home to plenty of comfortable
places to rest, dine or just relax throughout this top retreat-destination.

for their livelihood. As the population
grew and the transportation waterway
prospered, packet boats and passenger
vessels, traveled from town to town.
Entertainment was prevalent and
families would often meet each year, at
the same locations, to share stories and
adventures...just as they do today.

Visit
Honeoye Lake
Modern fisheries management at Honeoye Lake began with the placement of seasons,
bag limits and size limits on gamefish. Records indicate that Honeoye was first stocked
with walleye around the turn-of-the-century. Today, the co-dominant sport species are
walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and chain pickerel with walleye the only
species stocked (8.7 million fry annually) into the lake by the DEC.
Honeoye is a highly regarded fishing lake. In addition to its excellent sportfish opportunities,
the lake also supports an outstanding panfish fishery for bluegill, pumpkinseed, yellow
perch and black crappie. Current management emphasis for the lake is to maintain a
relatively high density of predator species, to control the abundant panfish and newly
established alewife populations. Periodic fishery surveys are conducted to monitor fish
populations. An ongoing angler diary cooperator program for sportfish provides DEC
fisheries staff with useful data on population trends.
Public access sites include the Honeoye Lake Public Boat Launch, located at the SE corner
of the lake off East Lake Road. There is parking for 30 cars with trailers and is operated by
the office of the Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Winter maintenance allows
for ice fishing access. Sandy Bottom Beach launching is available for small trailered boats,
cartops and canoes off Sandy Bottom Road, at the NW corner of the lake. Lakeside parking
allows for about 6 cars. There is additional parking near the baseball diamond. Operated
by the Town of Richmond. Winter maintenance allows for ice fishing access.

Mastery and artistry at East Hill Boat Shop & Gallery

Over 50 years ago, a group of artisans came together and formed the Rochester Folk Art Guild, a community of creative and
intellectual people who use their natural talents and natural environment to create and share quality, finely-crafted wares.

By Deborah Blackwell | Messenger Post Media

A unique treasure tucked away in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, East Hill Farm
is the 350-acre farm where the guild lives and works, offering a beautiful backdrop
of rolling hills and vineyards, and a landscape providing natural materials of wood,
vines, and clay. Nearby ponds, fields and lakes offer inspiration for the artists.
The on-site East Hill Gallery showcases the special pieces including woodenware,
porcelain pottery, stoneware, weaving, greeting cards, furniture, music and even
handcrafted wooden boats.
The East Hill Boat Shop is a well-known part of the community, where Sterling Klinck
has been restoring, repairing and rebuilding wooden rowing, sailing, and paddling
crafts for more than 20 years.
Originally a cabinet and furniture maker, Klinck loves boats and sailing, and hates
to see old boats in need of repair tossed aside for newer, modern versions. Klinck
furthered his interest in wooden boats after a less than comfortable ride in an
aluminum canoe.
He began by restoring wood canoes in the barn at East Hill, then in the late 1990s
made boat craftsmanship his full-time job. The East Hill Boat Shop became a
workshop solely devoted to custom building and restoration. Boat restoration work
demands that you use a lot of hand tools rather than machinery, says Klinck. We
use machinery when its practical to get the rough pieces formed, and then there is a
larger concentration of hours using hand tools. And thats what I love to do.
Klinck has been with the Rochester Folk Art Guild since the late 1960s and helped
design and build some of the buildings on the farm. He is known for keeping the

traditional ways of working with wood alive, with attention to the smallest details.
I have always loved doing things with my hands, even when I was a kid. I have
been fixing or making things for as long as I can remember, says Klinck. It is very
satisfying to return a canoe to its original condition. It is difficult work, but there is
such a satisfaction that finally this thing that was in pieces is now restored.
In addition to restoring old boats, Klinck has also designed and built a new boat,
the Catspaw Dinghy, which can be rowed or sailed, and used for fishing, sailing or
swimming. This specialty vessel, built by hand and with great care, seats up to four
people, for family or solo outings. Every single part of the Catspaw is handmade, all
from scratch. He builds about one or two a year, says Paul Schliffer, Guild member
since 1972, resident, farmworker, musician, and business office manager.
Anyone can bring boats to Sterling to restore and repair, or if interested, can place
an order for a Catspaw Dinghy. You would be surprised at the condition of these
things. He meticulously restores woodwork, adds new canvas and paint, its new or
better than new when hes done, says Schliffer. People are delighted. His prices are
reasonable too. You can get a restoration for about half the price of a new canoe.
Even without a boat to repair, seeing Sterling Klincks special craft is worth a visit to
East Hill Farm. Now open for the season, it is easy to connect to the Guild through the
East Hill Gallery on site. Tours are available, and there are public events each year.
We want people to know about the interesting and unusual offerings of the Guild,
says Schliffer. Were easy to find, right off the main road. More and more discover
us all the time.

Naples Grape Festival

art, history, music and of course pie!

By Deborah Blackwell | Messenger Post Media

The festival that draws almost 80,000 each September to Naples, is more like an iconic
gathering of loversof the famous Concord grape. Celebrating harvest, wine, pie, and culture,
with some amazing art and music thrown in, the Naples Grape Fest brings people together to
salute and enjoy one of the reasons for living in the Finger Lakesthe grape. Surrounding the
historic Memorial Town Hall on Main Street, festival-goers can spend a weekend soaking up
the scenery, the sounds of local musicians, and the flavors and aroma of wine, grape pie and
smokey barbecue. There is also a juried arts and craft market, and this year a home, garden and
recreation show will make its debut.
More than a dozen local wineries will showcase and sample their wines in the wine tasting tent.
The Finger Lakes region is known for its world-class, award-winning wines. At the Naples Grape
Festival, wineries unite for this special weekend event.
Arts and crafts enthusiasts enjoy browsing the distinctive displays of local handmade wares,
woodworking, art and more. In front of the Memorial Town Hall festival-goers will find Kings
Row, a collection of the Best of Show winners, decided by a jury of peer artists and craftspeople.
These talented artists are an excellent sampling of the creative fiber of the region.
The festival would not be complete without Finger Lakes fare, especially grape pie, the local
speciality. Naples has earned its reputation as the grape pie capital of the world, and the Worlds
Greatest Grape Pie contest is a must-do for all generations of bakers. This unique and delicious

pie made from Concord grapes, where judges consider taste, texture, appearance and flavor.
Although grape pie may take center stage, there is plenty of other great food to be had at
the festival, everything from specialty artichokes and crepes to traditional sausage and pizza.
Vendors sell homemade ice cream and fudge, sauces, maple syrup delicacies, fresh-squeezed
lemonade and more.
Nothing goes better with palate-pleasing food than good music, performed by local and
regional talent. Spend a few minutes or all day listening to the variety of styles, including blues,
jazz, rock, and the original music of Finger Lakes songwriters.
The Naples Grape Festival originated in the early 1960s and was more of a carnival, with
a parade, floats, even a festival king and queen. Eventually residents called a halt to the
increasingly rowdy, annual event. The Naples Historical Society and the Rotary Club of Naples
teamed up to bring the festival back in 1992 as a celebration of local arts, crafts, music and
food. Now the festival is the single, largest fundraiser for both the Naples Rotary Club and the
Naples Historical Society. The money raised at the festival stays there to help the community,
organizers say.
Come out for a beautiful day! The 2015 Naples Grape Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday,
September 26-27, from 10:00am to 5:00pm, rain or shine.

2015 SUMMER GUIDE PAGE 47

Wayne County, a visit worthwhile

Rural charm, scenic beauty, and plenty of festivals, fairs and entertainment make Wayne County a
centerpiece for summer family fun. Located on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, Wayne County
sports 35 miles of shoreline for swimming, boating, and fishing. The Seaway Trail (a national scenic
byway) and the Historic Erie Canal wind through the county offering plenty of water recreation.
Sodus Point is a lovely community situated on Sodus Bay, named for its silvery waters by Native
Americans. Often called, The Crown Jewel of Lake Ontario, there are plenty of amenities including
quaint shops, cozy bed and breakfasts, campgrounds, marinas, and lots of natural beauty to enjoy
whatever suits your pleasure.
From hiking and biking to antiquing and sightseeing, Wayne County is also rich in edible culture.
Country farm stands, farmers markets, and lots of apple picking orchards delight visitors throughout
the season. This is one of the worlds most productive fruit-growing regions, and according to Wayne
Countys Office of Tourism, not only is it the top apple-producing county in New York, but it is the
second largest producer of apples in the country. The town of Lyons is home to the historic H.G.
Hotchkiss Peppermint Factory which bottled and shipped their peppermint oil worldwide.
Its easy to enjoy spending time on the expanding Lake Ontario Wine Trail. Wayne County has five

wineries offering wide selections, and visitors can partake in wine events throughout the year.
Wayne County is home to several festivals and parades, fairs and carnivals from late spring through
early fall. These include Lyons' Peppermint Days, which delights those who love peppermint. The
Wayne County Fair, a tradition of agricultural and countryside entertainment, it is the oldest in the
state. Cracker Box Palace at Historic Alasa Farms Music Fest has bands, food, and fun til the cows
come home. This historical site overlooking Sodus Bay was formerly a Shaker community.
Wayne Countys historical past is alive and well as exhibited in the many museums, like the Hoffman
Clock Museum, displaying over 200 timepieces, and the Alling Coverlet Museum. The Town of
Palmyra is the birthplace of the Latter Day Saint Movement. The Book of Mormon was first published
here in 1830. Many of the properties in the area associated with early church history have been
restored, and are an integral part of Wayne Countys history.
Unique to Wayne County, Chimney Bluffs State Park is a popular attraction. Overlooking Lake Ontario
is a picturesque natural formation of spires of clay that were formed by glaciers. A beautiful must-see.
Wayne County spans 1,384 square miles of local villages in countryside settings, an historical past
still making memories today, and restorative natural beauty to make any day there worthwhile.

Wayne County, celebrates summer!

Cosi Fan Tutte
Geneva Light Opera Presents Mozarts
giddy comic opera Cosi fan tutte sung
in English. Directed by Neil Eddinger
and conducted by James Blachly with
a cast of outstanding singers including
baritone Jimi James. Mozarts witty opera
buffa follows 24 hours in the lives of
two beautiful sisters whose scandalous
infidelities make for a comic romp that
was considered too hot for audiences
even in the early 20th century. Cos fan
tutte features some of Mozarts most
sumptuous arias, duets, and ensemble
pieces. This production highlights comic
elements and takes its cue from romantic
comedies of the late 50s and early 60s
such as Pillow Talk, starring Doris Day
and Rock Hudson. Sung in Italian with
English surtitles. VIP tickets for Saturday
performance only. General admission $30,
