Rap/Urban

Tupac Shakur is 2Pac became the

unlikely martyr of gangsta rap, and a tragic
symbol of the toll its lifestyle exacted on
urban black America. At the outset of
his career, it didnt appear that he would
emerge as one of the definitive rappers of
the 90s -- he started out as a second-string
rapper and dancer for Digital Underground,
joining only after they had already landed
their biggest hit. But in 1991, he delivered
an acclaimed debut album, 2Pacalypse
Now, and quickly followed with a starmaking performance in the urban drama
Juice. Over the course of one year, his
profile rose substantially, based as much
on his run-ins with the law as his music.
By 1994, 2Pac rivaled Snoop Dogg as the
most controversial figure in rap, spending
as much time in prison as he did in the
recording studio. His burgeoning outlaw

mythology helped his 1995 album Me Against

the World enter the charts at number one, and
it also opened him up to charges of exploitation.
Yet, as the single Dear Mama illustrated, he
was capable of sensitivity as well as violence.
Signing with Death Row Records in late 1995,
2Pac released the double-album All Eyez on Me
in the spring of 1996, and the record, as well
as its hit single California Love, confirmed
his superstar status. Unfortunately, the gangsta
lifestyle he captured in his music soon overtook
his own life. While his celebrity was at its peak,
he publicly fought with his rival, the Notorious
B.I.G., and there were tensions brewing at
Death Row. Even with such conflicts, however,
2Pacs drive-by shooting in September 1996
came as an unexpected shock. On September
13, six days after the shooting, 2Pac passed
away, leaving behind a legacy that was based as
much on his lifestyle Hundreds of mourners
appeared at the hospital
upon news of his
death, and the entire
entertainment industry
mourned his passing,
especially since there
were no leads in the case.
Many believed his death
would end the muchhyped East Coast/West
Coast hip-hop rivalry
and decrease blackon-black violence. ,

Group were founded in 1987
by longtime friends Matt
Goldman, Phil Stanton,
and Chris Wink; identical
in
their
blue-painted
skin, skullcaps, and black
clothing, they soon became
a fixture of the New York
underground performance
art scene thanks to their
regular appearances in
Central Park, followed
by shows at noted East
Village spaces including
Dixon Place, Performance
Space 122, and the Wooster

Groups Performing Garage.

Equal parts play, concert,
and sketch routine, the
Blue Man Group combined
sight gags, physical stunts,
and audience participation,
with members of the front
rows given plastic rain

the hail of paint, food, and
other assorted projectiles
launched from the stage; in
early 1991, they premiered
their production Tubes

Pop

Michael
Jackson
was
unquestionably the biggest pop
star of the 80s, and certainly one
of the most popular recording
artists of all time. In his prime,
Jackson was an unstoppable
juggernaut, possessed of all the
tools to dominate
the charts seemingly
at will: an instantly
identifiable
voice,
eye-popping dance
moves,
stunning
musical versatility,
and loads of sheer
star power. His 1982
blockbuster Thriller
became the biggestselling album of
all time (probably
his
best-known
accomplishment), and he was the
first black artist to find stardom on
MTV, breaking down innumerable
boundaries both for his race and
for music video as an art form.
Yet as Jacksons career began,
very gradually, to descend from
the dizzying heights of his peak
years, most of the medias attention
focused on his increasingly
bizarre eccentricities; he was often
depicted as a man-child in a state of
arrested development, completely
sheltered from adult reality by a
life spent in show business. The
snickering turned to scandal in

1993, when Jackson was accused

of molesting a 13-year-old boy;
although he categorically denied the
charges, his out-of-court settlement
failed to restore his tarnished image.
He never quite escaped the stigma
of those allegations, and while he
continued
to
sell
records at
sup erst arlike levels,
he
didnt
release
them with
enough
f re q u e n c y
(or, many
c r it i c s
thought,
inspiration)
to once again become better known
for his music than his private life.
Whether as a pop icon or a tabloid
caricature, Jackson always remained
bigger than life. In early 2009,
Jackson announced an ambitious
comeback, dubbed This Is It,
including a series of ten concerts
at O2 Arena in London. (After
high ticket sales, the number was
later increased to 50.) He rehearsed
extensively in Los Angeles during
the spring, but on the afternoon
of June 25, 2009, he was found
unresponsive at his home.

Tubes eventually expanded
to long runs in Boston,
Chicago, and Las Vegas; in
1999, the Blue Man Group
also issued an album, Audio,
spotlighting their custom
musical instruments. Three
year later, the trio inked
a multi-album deal with
Atlantics sister label, Lava
Records. The Complex,
which appeared in April
2003, marked the Blue

Subsequently ditching the
almost inevitable creative
cul-de-sac of rock for
the more appealing rush
of the dancefloor, the
pair released their debut
single, The New Wave,
in 1993 on the celebrated
Soma label. Instantly

was followed by Da

Although the group

in early 1996 Daft Punk
