Role of research in Global Food Challenge:
Basic needs of every human being stand out to be Roti Kapda aur Makaan
(food, clothes and shelter). With the increasing number of people in the earth
and decreasing area of arable land, supplying food to the future generation is
a challenge waiting for us to be combated with. Future looks even gloomy
when we see natural calamities invading our plowed land, other fugitive
pathogens, insects; unwanted weeds become the intruder to worsen the
scenario. With all these challenges in hand and less viable alternatives for
answering global food scarcity in the coming century, agrochemical research
is the only way out for todays generation to secure the future food supply.
Syngenta, the pioneer in agribusiness, has foreseen the blurry future well
ahead of time and zeroed its focus only to crop protection research unlike
other companies. In other way its a well measured step Syngenta has taken
for facing these challenges and to provide sustainable and integrated
solution to the farmers all over the world. Continuous research is always a
need since one blockbuster product cannot live in the market forever as
there are many issues associated with it like resistance, one of the major
challenges which nature imposes to us very often, IP issue etc. Even generic
products although cheap in price cannot cope up with the resistance
pressure.
With these issues in mind another question which bubbles up is, does our
research activity can bring adversity to the environment or in other words
are we making the product safe enough to be used in crops without having
no human or environment toxicity issues? The answer is YES. Syngenta
harness the practice of research in synergy with the ecosystem i.e. without
perturbing the balance of flora and fauna. It always makes its best effort by
keeping major focus on health safety and environment objectives.
To combat with these challenges research is the prime objective and
Syngenta armed with pool of intellectual people engaged in digging out the
best possible solutions every now and then. Although research can provide
sustainable solution but those fruit of research many times stays out of reach
from the end users. Keeping this in mind, Syngenta had set out some of the
initiatives as a part of their CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program to
connect end users with Syngenta products so farmers can learn about its
proper use, safety aspects and environment friendly properties. Syngenta
believes, as drops of water can make mighty ocean so its small endeavors
in research collectively can churn out the best possible solution to address
many of the challenges lurking around in the years to come.
