Observation Protocol 6

This observation document summarizes a lesson on plural nouns taught to a 4th grade class. The teacher introduced plural nouns and had students read a text aloud, defining unfamiliar words. Students then practiced making nouns plural in an exercise. The teacher closed by previewing the next lesson on possessive nouns. The observer assessed it as a good lesson because students were actively engaged throughout. To improve it, the observer recommended the teacher ensure all students have an opportunity to participate to keep engagement levels high.

Trainee teacher: Tanja Ivanovska 860182

Observation Date: 26th October 2009
Time: Start: 13:30 End: 14:10
School: 138 SOU Professor Vasil Zlatarski
Mentor Teacher: Svetlana Petkova
Section A: Basic descriptive information <include details about teacher, grade level, details about
students>
This is 4th grade, and its the first class today. I have coming in this class for some time and we are
getting on very well with each other. The children are all very nice and open. They communicate
easily and they are quite friendly. I expect them to be concentrated and prepared for the lesson. The
teacher is trying to be active in the class. The lesson today is called: How much how many.
Students are ready to work and want to improve themselves in front of us.
Section B: Teaching and learning procedures
Procedure (contents and participation
structure, instructional time, etc.)
Opening
Teacher is introducing todays topicgrammatical category Noun and how they
can make plurals.
Teaching and learning activities
First exercise is reading. Students are reading
the text, they are reading one by one and are
trying to get the idea of the text; they should
find unfamiliar words, to give synonyms to
those words or to explain in English.
Next task, the focus is on the task to make
plurals from the given nouns.
Closing
Teacher is saying that the next class will
learn about possessive form of the noun.

Analysis, Evaluation, Recommendation

I think that students are more active and

motivated if teacher gives those exercises
from the beginning of the class.
This exercise is interesting to them, words
are easy to explain and that stimulates them
to be active in the class. Also teacher is
correcting them if they have some mistakes.

Teacher creates a relaxed atmosphere. She

prepares the students for next class and for
new tasks. They have her attention and are
interesting for next class.

Section C: Overall ratings of the lesson <include summaries of the objectives and contents of the
lesson>

TS, 2009-2010

Teacher asks students to read the text in their students books; there are some unfamiliar words
which she is explaining them and after that she is ask them to give synonyms which they should
explain each word in English.
Next exercise is new for the students and they are really excited to do it and learn something
new. They are studying for nouns and their plural forms; they learn want is the way in which each
noun can be made plural and the rules for it.
Section D: Overall assessment of the quality of the lesson <is this a good lesson, why?>
I believe that this lesson can be said to be very good because all of the students were active. The
students as a whole are very enthusiastic to take part in the activities and the most important is that the
students learn how to make all nouns in their plural forms.
Section E: Recommendation <how can the efficacy of the lesson be improved?>
Teacher use good techniques and student understands the topic that has learned this class.
Some of students have more knowledge and the rest of the students get shadowy by the other; they
dont have time to express their opinion. However this lesson is important for the students and I think
that most of the students have learned about plural nouns.
