INTRODUCTION
The SLC5501RFCP C-Bus Fan Controller unit is a DIN rail mounted
C-Bus output device that provides speed control for a ceiling fan.
The Fan Controller uses multiple relays and a dual capacitor block
for speed selection.
The Fan Controller can be installed in a standard C-Bus enclosure,
or in an optional enclosure, such as SLC5501FRE plastic enclosure,
on a wall or in a ceiling space.
The SLC5501RFCP Fan Controller provides C-Bus control of a
ceiling fan for up to three speeds (Low, Medium and High) and Off.
The unit uses double pole latching relays that switch both the active
and neutral inputs. For the High speed, the active line and neutral
are connected direct on-line (DOL) to the fan motor using the screw
terminal connections (no capacitor in the circuit).
A dual speed-control block capacitor is conveniently located inside
the Fan Controller body. The capacitor is a non-serviceable part
provided by Schneider Electric.
The unit is for indoor use only. The fan controller must be mounted
in an enclosure that is properly-rated for the application. A qualified
person must install the electrical connections.
The Fan Controller has a non-illuminated local override 'Manual'
pushbutton that has similar functions to other C-Bus output devices,
including Learn mode. The local override button can override the
output. Each press cycles the speed of the fan in the following
order: Off > Low > Medium > High
The unit has orange Unit and C-Bus LED indicators. In addition,
there are orange indicators for each of the three selectable fan
speeds. The fan speed indicators tell you the current speed
selection (Low-Med-Hi). When no relay is energized, all of the fan
speed indicators are off.
There are two RJ45 connectors for C-Bus. The C-Bus Remote
Override On and Off functions are not used in Fan Controller. For
DIN rail mounting, use the standard 400 mm RJ45-RJ45 C-Bus
network cable. A bootlace cable is provided for ceiling mounting
inside the SLC5501FRE enclosure.

Before You Begin
Before installing a C-Bus ceiling fan DIN Controller, verify that your
order is complete by comparing the contents of the package with the
appropriate items in the table below. Also verify that the catalog
number on the box label matches your order.

Network Considerations
The DIN Fan Controller can draw mA from the C-Bus network.
Determine the total network current load and verify that there will be
enough C-Bus power to support all connected devices. Also verify
that the amount of available power per C-Bus network is no more
than 2A.
NOTE: The C-Bus network voltage can vary from 15V to 36V d.c. If
the C-Bus network is disconnected or if the C-Bus voltage drops
below 15V d.c. the fan speed will be set to Off. The unit does not
derive power from the mains, nor does it require a mains connection
to operate.

COMPONENTS AND OPERATION
The indicator LEDs show unit status and fan speed. The
non-illuminated Local Override 'Manual' pushbutton provides 'Local
Toggle' and Learn Mode functions. See the figure below.

Fan Speed LED Indicators
The Fan Controller activates the corresponding orange indicator
when the output is set to Low, Medium or High. All fan speed
indicators are off when the fan speed is set to Off.
The local fan speed control sequence is Off-Low-Medium-High-Off.
When switching from "High" or "Med" speed to "Low" speed, the unit
will automatically switch to "High" for a few seconds before going to
"Low" speed. This allows the fan motor to turn prior to switching to
"Low" (lower current) speed setting. Higher current is required to
start motors from stand still.

Local Override Manual Pushbutton (non-illuminated)
Local Toggle Mode
Local Toggle Mode allows manual cycling of the fan through the
speed control sequence. This feature is most often used during
testing and commissioning. The Local Toggle feature can be
disabled using Toolkit software.
With all relays OFF, use a short press to start Local Toggle Mode if
the Fan Controller is not already in Local Toggle mode and if the
software allows the feature.
Subsequent button presses step the Fan Controller relays through
the speed control sequence: Low-Med-Hi-Off, etc.
Use a long press to exit Local Toggle Mode and return the Fan
Controller to normal C-Bus control.
Learn Mode
Learn mode is most often used to assign the Fan Controller to a
lighting group. The Learn Mode feature can be disabled using
Toolkit software.
If the Fan Controller is not in Local Toggle Mode and if the software
allows Learn Mode, use a long press (10 seconds) to start Learn
Mode. A subsequent long press exits Learn Mode.

Follow the procedures in this section to mount the DIN Fan
Controller units and to make electrical and C-Bus network wiring
connections.
Mounting onto the DIN Rail
The DIN-rail units are designed to be installed onto a standard 1.38
in. (35 mm) DIN rail.

Using the Optional Enclosure
The optional SLC5501FRE enclosure may be used when the Fan
Controller is installed on a wall or in a ceiling space.
Read the following guidelines when mounting the enclosure,
installing DIN hardware or making wiring connections.
In some locations it is advisable to cut or drill the holes for cable
entry and exit before you permanently mount the back piece of
the enclosure.
 The enclosure can be mounted horizontally or vertically. Be sure
to use mounting screws that are correct for the mounting
surface, usually drywall or wood.
 Keep the C-Bus network cables separate from the power input
and fan wires. The C-Bus Cat.5e cabling enters from one end of
the enclosure and the power and fan (load) wires enter from the
opposite end.
 Be sure to secure the cables at the anchor points to prevent
accidental disconnection of the wires from the unit.
NOTE: Placing the fan controller inside the enclosure creates a
physical barrier between the C-Bus and the electrical power cabling
and fan control areas of the enclosure. Mount the controller only in
the orientation shown below.

Wiring Guidelines
Follow the guidelines below when working with the DIN Fan Controller.
Verify that the power supplying the system is turned OFF before handling
electrical power conductors.
Observe national and local electrical codes.
Isolate the DIN Fan Controller from the Class 1 wiring. Consult your national and
local electrical codes for requirements about isolating Class 1 wiring and Class 2
wiring terminals.
Prevent wire cuttings and debris from entering the unit.
Consider the total current consumption when designing the power feed and
selecting the cables. Also verify that the load supply has been protected by an
appropriately rated circuit breaker.
 Follow the wiring diagrams.
 The supply circuit for the fan motor must be protected by a circuit breaker or fuse.
 Be sure to provide a separate earth (ground) wire for the fan motor body. The Fan
Controller does not have an earthing terminal.
 Install the Fan Controller in an indoor location protected from moisture and direct
sunlight.
 The Fan Controller relays are rated at 1.5A FLA for an inductive load only. Do not
exceed the rated value.
 The double pole relays in the Fan Controller switch the neutral as well as the
active line. Do not use the fan motor output terminals as a connection point for
any other device.
 Use only copper and aluminum wire and solid conductor or stranded network
cable.
 Keep the C-Bus network cabling segregated from Class 1 electrical power and fan
motor wiring in accordance with local wiring regulations.
 When using the enclosure, the C-Bus Cat.5e cables must exit from one end of the
enclosure and the power and fan connections must exit from the opposite end.
 Provide strain relief for cables and seal the cable entry holes when using the
optional enclosure.
A Cat 5 UTP patch cord is included with the unit to facilitate easy interconnection of
units. Always verify that the network current load and available power are within limits
before adding units to the network.

Megger Testing Guidelines
Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals. Megger
testing of data cabling or terminals can degrade the performance of
the C-Bus network.
It will not harm the units if electrical power terminals only are
Megger tested. But because units contain electronic components,
the Megger readings will not be correct. To obtain valid readings,
disconnect the power lines from the units.
HAZARD OF NETWORK OVERVOLTAGE
Do not Megger test C-Bus data cabling or terminals as it can
degrade the performance of the C-Bus network.
Failure to follow this instruction will result in damage to the
equipment.
Connection to the C-Bus Network
The C-Bus network is connected to the through two polarity
sensitive RJ45 inputs located on the . Connect the unit to the C-Bus
network with Category 5 unshielded twisted pair C-Bus network
cable, and a wired RJ45 plug. Refer to the "Wiring Connections Key
Diagram" and the "RJ45 Pin Connections" table for wiring and pin
connection information.
NOTE: To clearly distinguish C-Bus from other UTP Cat5 cables, it
is recommended to use a different colored cable, or clearly label the
C-Bus UTP Cat5 cable.
NOTE: The Category 5 unshielded twisted pair C-Bus network cable
and the wired RJ45 plug are provided by the installer.

CONFIGURATION
Before a DIN Fan Controller can operate on the C-Bus network, the
C-Bus Toolkit software must be used to assign a unique
identification (unit address) and mode of operation on the network.
When the units are being installed as part of a large or complex
network, it is most efficient to perform the basic configuration before
the units are physically installed. However, the units can be
configured before or after physical installation.
Voiding the C-Bus Software Warranty
Using software not provided or approved by Schneider Electric
could void the hardware warranty.
Configuring, Labeling, and Recording the Locations of C-Bus Units
C-Bus units must be configured, at a minimum, with the unit address
and part name before being physically installed on the network.
Each unit is identified by a unique serial number found on the box
label (see the figure Example of a Box Label with Lift-and-Peel
Section). The serial number provides important information for
recording a unit's location. An infrared barcode scanner may be
used to read the box label's bar code for the serial number and unit
information.
Use the C-Bus Toolkit to assign the unit a unique address, and then
mark the address and part name directly onto the unit before
physical installation. You can use the lift-and-peel label from the unit
box, or write the unit address and part name directly on the unit.
After marking the unit, record each unit's physical location onto a
site plan or panel schedule.

One network burden is required for proper C-Bus operation, network

Software Burden
The DIN Fan Controller incorporates a software-selectable network
burden. To enable a software-selectable burden, first install a
hardware burden on the network and then enable the software
burden using C-Bus Toolkit software. After the software burden is
enabled, remove the hardware burden.
C-Bus System Clock
The DIN Fan Controller has a software-selectable C-Bus system
clock with the capability to synchronize data communication on the
C-Bus network. Typically the clock is disabled: Successful C-Bus
network communications require only one active clock. A maximum
of three C-Bus units per network can have the clock enabled. Refer
to the C-Bus Toolkit software for additional information and to
enable the DIN Fan Controller system clock.
POWER OUTAGES AND RESTORATION
All C-Bus units have on-board non-volatile memory that stores the
operating state of the unit in the event of a power outage. When
power is restored, the units carry out a diagnostic that lasts a few
seconds.
The DIN Fan Controller loads will remain OFF while the unit
restores the channels to their previous states, according to the units
recovery settings. The load status will be displayed on the channels'
status indicator LEDs.
