In the Chinese way of describing the necessities of

life, clothing ranks at the top of clothing, food, shelter
and means of travel, which shows its important place in
life. In this country with a long history of garments and
ornaments, with integration of ethnic groups and cultural
exchange between the East and West, clothing styles and
customs have been evolving since ancient times.

This book first introduces the characteristics and

development courses of several main types of Chinese
ancient traditional architecture, then briefly describes the
complicated course of Chinese architectures development
in the modern contemporary times, and analyzes the
diversified current architectural types and directions of
development in the end, in the hope of showing interested
people an overview of Chinese architecture.

Chinese Culture: Festivals

Chinese Culture: Literature

Wang Xuewen

Li Chunyu

Chinese Culture: Festivals is a superficial observation

of current Chinese festivals. We select 21 festivals from
the numerous festivals, and then proceed from the spirit of
festivals to write about seven topics including Tenacious
Memories, Holy Sacrifice, Mundane Revelry, Rhythm of
Production, etc. While looking back at history, we focus
more on the presentation of the current situation in the
hope of giving a brief account of current Chinese festivals
to readers.

The history of Chinese literature can be traced to more

than 3,000 years ago at least. It includes ancient literature
before the early 20th century traceable to the same origin
and modern and contemporary literature since the 20th
century with fully changed literary concepts, contents and
language.

This book aims to explore Chinese philosophical

characteristics of different philosophers in various periods,
and distinguish Chinese philosophical sensibility
motivating their thoughts. In doing so, the author employs
Western philosophical categories to describe different
issues in the history of philosophy

Chinese characters are square-shaped ideograms and

the only ancient language alive in the world. The existence
of Chinese characters is a miracle in the human civilization
history. Today, Chinese characters are still developing.
This ancient language used by most people in the world is

Chinese Culture: Crafts

Chinese Culture: Arts

Guo Qiuhui, Wang Lidan

Liu Qiangong

Chinese crafts have won unique good reputations in the

history of the material culture of the various nationalities
in the world. It was this kind of life and the style of art in
the agricultural farming society that decided the special
features of the traditional crafts of China. The book
introduces the history and development of the crafts of
China.

Some people believe that one can understand a country

by learning its art, for art is the gather of peoples thought.
Chinese arts had left us abundant cultural heritage,
including a lot of man-made articles and wisdom of life.
Readers will learn how these arts apply to many kinds of
fields such as utensil, apparel, furnishings, adornment,
entertainment, and commerce in this book.

I n a n c i e n t C h i n e s e c i v i l i z a t i o n , a s t r o n o m y,
mathematics, agriculture and medicine were the four
advanced sciences. Maybe it is improper to call them
sciences, but they were really the four complete systems
of knowledge and skills developed in ancient China.
Among them, medicine is the only one that has never been
replaced by Western sciences and still plays an important
role in protecting the health of Chinese people. Then there
is a question. How traditional Chinese medicine, a classic
system of medicine without any connection with modern
sciences, can still exist in spite of the fact that modern
medicine can basically meet the need of healthcare? Is
traditional Chinese medicine a science or just a collection
of experience? Does it still have the possibility and space
to further develop itself along its own orbit? Is there any
possibility that it may be replaced by modern medicine?
There are the questions frequently being asked.

Foreigners who have been to China not only marvel at

the numerous types of Chinese local foods, but also admire
the changeful tastes of Chinese dishes. Though dishes in
various areas have different tastes, good colors, smells
and tastes are pursued for all dishes. Chinese people set
great store by enjoyment of good foods, demonstrating
joyful and leisurely eating in all aspects of daily life and
pursuing their own art of eating. This eating cultures
influence on the worlds diversified cultures is far beyond
eating itself.

This book, based on a nationwide sample survey

data, was written by Zhang Mingshu, a researcher for the

political attitudes in 1988-1989, right around the time of

the changes of Chinese political culture in several aspects
in the past twenty years, and found that Chinese urban
residents have become more conservative, cynical and
pragmatic in their attitudes towards politics in the last
quarter of century.

[Created in China]
China is on the road to great national rejuvenation and is heading in a clear development direction.
The report of the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China suggested that China
should carry out an innovation-driven development strategy, stick to the path of independent
innovation with Chinese characteristics, and pool the wisdom and strength of the whole of society
and concentrate on innovation and development. In the future, made in China will give way to
created in China, and the creation will be recognized worldwide. In the process of its development,
China will draw lessons from foreign advanced technology, but more importantly, it should rely on
its own efforts. This series of books timely reflects positive social achievements of China in various

This book reveals the social vicissitudes of Taiwan,

based on The True History of Taiwan and Taiwans History
by Dr. Chi Chia-lin. Our story begins from the early staged
of Taiwan, and extends to the recovery of Taiwan in 1945.

Starting as a developer of messaging software, in ten

short years Ma Huateng steered Tencent into all phases
needed for a dominant presence on the Chinese internet:
from value-added wireless operations, games, portal
and search operations to e-commerce, and third-party
payments. With ease and aplomb, Ma made Tencent the
pattern-setter of Chinas whole internet industry.

characterized by decentralised ownership, and strong
presence abroad. The image it has built of itself has earned
the company the name China Dragon. Ren Zhengfei, the
founder of this China Dragon today employing 100,000

By immersing himself in technical innovation, Wang

Chuanfu cleared his enterprises road to prominence in
both the automotive and battery industries, making BYD

More than 70 percent of Chinese studying overseas

regard Yu Minhong as their teacher. Through his set-backs
and achievements, Yu has earned himself plenty of titles:
an entrepreneur who shines like a beacon, business
hero, an abecedarian of life, richest teacher in China,
and many more. But behind such accolades, what is the
real Yu like?
In reality, Yu is neither glittering nor glorious. An
honest man, he plowed the fields, taught countryside
students, hesitated with his first love. But he has an iron
resolve: he never gives up. He failed the national college
entrance exam twice; he lost a decent job, but he created
his own businessin the beginning pasting advertisements
for his small school in sub-zero temperatures. Like a snail,
Yu climbs on, with patience and perseverance, overcoming
all obstacles along the way.

The Lang Way to Success

A Life of Love and Benevolence

Liu Yuanju

Suhao, Bai Yuping

Lang Langs outstanding achievements are largely

owing to his passion, devotion and genius. Lang Langs
performance is a combination of Evgeny Kissin and
Murray Perahia and is very charming. His charm, manner
and every facial expression are unforgettable. Balakirevs
Islamey was played so easily with his hands. Hes indeed
an honor of IMG Artists.

Showered with many accolades and distinctions, Jet

Lihas attracted no shortage of criticism for being a man of
incredible contradictions. He calls for the general public,
particularly his fans, to keep donating to charity and
he commends Chinese philanthropist Chen Guangbiao
for giving away his fortune; yet he has spent RMB 200
million building a lavish mansion for his own family. As
the founder of One Foundation and an active participant
in the Foundations charity activities, he has kept his lips
sealed to inquiries about how much he hasdonated to the
Foundation. He isseenby his wifeNina Li-Chias a devoted
husband and an affectionate father, but wasallegedly
accused of being disloyal and disrespectful to his first wife.
He started out being a Chinese hero-like martial artist and,
now having conquered Hollywood and found fame, he has

and relations of China and Israel. The 12 stories selected in

the life support in the times of war and the passionate
dedication in the years of peace, the great efforts made
by the governments of both countries in developing the
relations between the two countries, as well as the rich
results in the pragmatic cooperation in different fields.

by the same mountains and rivers. 63 years ago, the
two countries established diplomatic relations, an event
that opened a new chapter in their relationship. This

Stories of Tibet

Tibet from All Angles

Zhang Xiaoming

Song Shuhong

Tibet is a hot topic. Many people are talking about

it, and many people are writing books about its history,
culture, Buddhism, scenery, tourism and customs... But
few people really understand Tibet... Tibet in my stories
maybe is different from that imagined and understood by
the general readership. I have my unique understanding
about Tibet. As a scholar, I am somewhat rational. I lived
in Tibet for more than a decade. After returning to Beijing,
I am still engaged in Tibet-related work, so I feel very
emotional about the region. I hope my stories about Tibet,
integrating my emotional and rational thoughts, can be of
some help to those desiring to understand Tibet.

This book is a little encyclopedia about Tibet,

presented with key words, brief introduction and related
pictures. It covers various aspects about Tibet, including
its history, geography, customs, religions, tourism,
economics, society, ect.. From this book, you may get a
general knowledge about this fascinating place.

Zhang Xiaoming, former editor-in-chief of Chinas

Tibet Magazine, haved lived in Tibet for nearly 10 years.
Familiar with all aspects of Tibet, she focuses on the
geography, history and culture of Tibet in this book.

Confucius: A Philosopher for the Ages

Lao Tzu: The Eternal Tao Te Ching

Xu Yuanxiang

Criticize and repudiate Confucius! Down with

Confucius! How does Confucius fare in China in the
20th Century? Is Confucius a sage or an ordinary person?
How does the school of thought of Confucius form? What
is its influence on the world?

In any Taoist area of China, it is common to see a

statue of an old man, with white hair and beard, long
ears drooping down towards his shoulders. He is Lao
Tzu, the man most closely associated with Taoist belief.
Lao Tzu was famous for this Tao Te Ching . The original
meaning of the Chinese character Tao is a road or path
people walk upon; however, the Tao of Lao Tzu is a
sublimation and extension of that meaning

Confucius and Mencius are known in the Chinese

history was the two greatest sages. In the two millennia

ideas have continued to have a major influence on the
Chinese people. Even today, people can be regularly heard
to quote the sayings of this man

Sun Tzu: The Ultimate Master of War

Xu Yuanxiang, Li Jing
Of the 4,000-odd books on military strategy produced
over the course of Chinese history, the Art of War is almost
unanimously acknowledged as the most outstanding. It
was written by Sun Wu (Sun Tzu), a well-known general
some 2,500 years ago. The fact that a man and the book
he wrote still exert a profound influence over 2,500 years
since his death surely makes one want to find out exactly
what a kind of man Sun Tzu was and what exactly he
wrote about.

Zhuangzi: Enjoyment of Life in an

Untroubled State
Xu Yuanxiang, Yin Yongjian
Zhuangzi was, after Laozi, one of the earliest thinkers
to contribute to the philosophy that has come to be known
as Daojia, or school of the Way. According to traditional
dating, he was an almost exact contemporary of the
Confucian thinker Mencius, but there appears to have been
little to no communication between them. He is ranked
among the greatest of literary and philosophical giants
that China has produced. His style is complexmythical,
poetic, narrative, humorous, indirect, and polysemic.
Zhuangzi espoused a holistic philosophy of life,
encouraging disengagement from the artificialities of
socialization, and cultivation of our natural ancestral
potencies and skills, in order to live a simple and natural,
but full and flourishing life. He was critical of our ordinary
categorizations and evaluations, noting the multiplicity
of different modes of understanding between different
creatures, cultures, and philosophical schools, and the
lack of an independent means of making a comparative
evaluation. He advocated a mode of understanding
that is not committed to a fixed system, but is fluid and
flexible, and that maintains a provisional, pragmatic
attitude towards the applicability of these categories and
evaluations.

Interpretation On New Philosophy of

Chinese Diplomacy
Compiled by the State Council Information
Office of the PRC
After the successful conclusion of the 18th National
Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012 as
well as the National Peoples Congress and the Chinese
Peoples Political Consultative Conference in 2013,
Chinese diplomacy has stepped into a new phrase under
the guidance of the new core leadership of China. With
many achievements, China focuses on long-term interests
and strategic overall situation of the world, and is in active
pursuit of innovation on diplomatic theory and practice.
Speeches by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li
Keqiang have given an overall look at Chinas position and
attitudes toward the international politics. In the second
part, senior officials will explain the new philosophy of
Chinese diplomacy in details. In the end, researchers will
illustrate the interactive model of Chinese diplomacy with
the rest of the world. By publishing this book, we hope
an overall philosophy and strategy of Chinese diplomacy
could be elaborated, presenting an open, confident and
responsible image of China to the world. We also hope
that the Chinese dream will deliver a positive message to
the international society.

The 20-Year Story of Chinese Internet

Industry
Li Dashan
The 20-Year Story of Chinese Internet Industry truly
represents the magnificent development history of Chinese
Internet industry since 1995 and vividly records lots
of celebrities who have been devoting themselves into
pioneering Chinese Internet industry over the past twenty
years and have become men of the time at present. Though
many of these influential men such as Ma Yun (Jack
Ma), Ma Huateng (Pony Ma), Ding Lei (William Ding),
Zhang Chaoyang (Charles Zhang), Zhou Hongyi and Liu
Qiangdong (Richard Liu) have long been known to the
public, the author tries to reinterpret them from a fresh
perspective with the latest material and more attention
on their stories in starting business and unfold the ups
and downs of these folk heroes and their relationships in
the Internet age through introducing a series of figures
with entrepreneurship. In this book there are stories of
grassroots civilians as well as rich and powerful families.
They are both the gold diggers in the Internet age and
the grave diggers of traditional ideas; they bring both
the unprecedented Internet freedom and a mixture of
everything impulsiveness, utilitarianism, money worship
and spreading viruses in spite of breeding the ideal and
passion of a new generation of young people. The author
tries to tell more figures and stories and less technology,
statistics and conjecture with a detailed, reliable and
objective writing style.
Figures in this book are all living legends and each of
their stories is thought-provoking. Top notch or grassroots,
wealthy or penniless, get rich overnight or go bankruptcy,
frank and lovely or astute and arrogant Nothing is too
strange among all sorts of legendary figures. In any case,
the world of Internet is rich and varied. Time will tell the
innocent and the guilty. In this book we are just trying
to share with readers the pluralism of the Internet age
honestly, objectively and humorously.

The Depths of History

Imaging record of Chinese sex slave during

World War II
Chen Qinggang
During the Asia-Pacific War, the Japanese military
forced hundreds of thousands of women across Asia into
comfort stations where they were repeatedly raped and
tortured. Japanese imperial forces claimed they recruited
women to join these stations in order to prevent the mass
rape of local women and the spread of venereal disease
among soldiers. In reality, these women were kidnapped
and coerced into sexual slavery. Comfort stations
institutionalized rape, and these comfort women were
subjected to atrocities that have only recently become the
subject of international debate.
This book is the history regarding this terrible
enslavement of Chinese women. It gives the often
forgotten history of how it happened, who was involved,
how they were treated, and the denials and apologies that
came years later.
The imagines in this book reveals that the prolonged
suffering of the comfort station survivors was not
contained to wartime atrocities but was rather a lifelong
condition resulting from various social, political, and
cultural factors. In addition, their stories bring to light
several previously hidden aspects of the comfort women
system: the ransoms the occupation army forced the
victims families to pay, the various types of improvised
comfort stations set up by small military units throughout
the battle zones and occupied regions, and the sheer scope
of the military sexual slavery-much larger than previously
assumed. The personal narratives of these survivors
combined with the testimonies of witnesses, investigative
reports, and local histories also reveal a correlation
between the proliferation of the comfort stations and the
progression of Japans military offensive.
