U2 AT 20
In the autumn of 1976, a piece of paper was pinned to
Dublins Mount Temple school noticeboard by a 15year-old pupil, Larry Mullen Jr. 0)____
This note was, perhaps, rock musics most pivotal free
advertisement, as the resulting band featuring Paul
Hewson (aka Bono), Adam Clayton, and Dave Evans
(The Edge) alongside Larry went through a series of
name changes including Feedback and The Hype
before eventually becoming U2.
As well as celebrating their 20th anniversary, in late
October U2 will release their ninth studio album.
1)____
At the time of writing, many facets of the release are
still confidential works-in-progress: the title, the final
selection of tracks, the lyrics, the songs, even the
album cover design.

Slowly but surely (and despite their overt religious

leanings in a business where morals mean very little),
U2 achieved focus and a firm foothold. Their first major
career step was taking part in a talent contest in
Limerick, on St. Patricks Day, March 1978.3)_____
All I could think of at the time was being impressed
enough to feel that they could make some kind of
impact on the international music scene, recollects
Hayden. 4)_____ I dont think anybody could have
forseen the heights they would scale in the future.
U2 signed to Island records in March 1980, and it
wasnt long before they began to make their mark.
5)_____
Neither album, however, made any substantial
commercial impact. 6)_____
Four years later, with the release and multi-platinum
success of The Joshua Tree, they made the cover of
Time magazine, under the headline Rocks Hottest
Ticket.

As the bands decidedly unprolific release history

reveals, throwaway records have never been their
forte. 2)_____ But then, U2 are not your average rock
group. They used to be, but not anymore.
A. It is a record that is viewed by insiders as the final part of a trilogy that began in 1991
Achtung Baby, and continued two years later with Zooropa.
B. I also wanted to see them going further than they actually were at that time they were
just a baby band, he added.
C. Back in the late 70s, U2 seemed perhaps the band least likely to succeed,
D. Written on the note was an enthusiastic enquiry as to whether like-minded individuals
would care to forma a rock band.
E. It was the bands third album, War, that proved to be their breakthrough record,
particularly in the most important marketplace of all: America.
F. Their debut album, Boy, was positively received, as was its 1981 follow-up October.
G. Their subsequently victory led one of the judges, Jackie Hayden, to offer them a much
needed helping hand.
H. There was a gap of four years between their formation and the appearance of their debut
album, Boy, whereas debut albums are usually quickly released, irrespective of quality.

Boy Dad, Dad! Can I have some money to buy a Game Boy?
Dad: A Game Boy? Those are too expensive.
Boy No, they're not. There only twenty-five dollars. I've got forty-two dollars before, but Mom didn't let
me buy one.
Dad: Well, let's look. Let's think of some ways so that . . . Hmm. Well, maybe we can come up with
some ways that you can earn money.
Boy Let's see . . . allowance.
Dad: Okay, well allowance. So, how much money can you make a week with allowance? What did
Mom tell you?
Boy She said that if, umm, you get your work done on time, you can get $1.25.
Dad: Okay, so if you get your work done, you get $1.25. Okay, and what are some other ways that you
can earn a little bit more money?
Boy Umm, let's see. I could work for people.
Dad: Okay, well, maybe you could come up with some odd jobs. What are a couple of things that you
could do to earn some money, maybe around here, in the neighborhood?
Boy Umm.
Dad: What about opening up a lemonade stand?
Boy I can try that. That'll be fun.
Dad: Okay. What else can you do?
Boy Hmmm. Most the kids on our block like candy, so I can start one of those.
Dad: Okay, so maybe selling some candy. [Yeah.] And, what else?
Boy Umm. I could . . . umm . . . take out the trash everyday.
Dad: Well, I think you have some ideas, so I guess if you save long, you'll be able to earn enough
money to buy something you want. Sound good?
Boy Like a Game Boy?
Dad: Uh, something you need, let's say.
Boy Uh! (Great surprise and disgust)
Dad: [Laughing]

TAPESCRIPT TRINITY COLLEGE LONDON

NARRATOR
What is the best to improve your listening? In this video Im going to share with you the technique I
used to improve my listening. This technique works and I wish I had known this technique a lot sooner
because it is easy to do and very effective. So lets get started.
First, lets talk about why most people fail to improve their listening. Improving your listening techniques
takes time, its a long-term process but most people forget that or they just dont know. So when they
practice listening, they use methods that are inconvenient. Something that is not easy to do. so its
impossible for them to continue doing it for a long time, as a result, most people quit before they get
any results. But how do I know this?
Well, I know this because Ive made the same mistake, Ive tried several methods that were
inconvenient like watching the same movie twice, with subtitles first and then without subtitles. That
was so boring so I quit after the forth movie. I also tried listening and then writing down what I heard but
that was too much work and I was too busy, so lets take this back to you.
How do you make sure that you dont fail like I did? Well, if you want to succeed, the method you use
must be convenient, it must be easy to do. If is not, youll probably quit before you see an improvement.
So let me share with you the most convenient way to improve your listening. Its very simple.
There are only two steps that you need to take. Heres the fist step:
1) Download a lot of listening materials to your phone or MP3 player.
Now The best listening materials are the ones where people are just talking naturally, theyre just
having real conversations. When you use this kind of materials, you are listening to a lot of common
everyday words that people use in real life. Now dont worry at the end of this video Im going to give
you a resource you can go to download this materials for free. So thats the first step.
The next step is very important, do not miss this step. The next step is to listen to the materials but
heres the key, do not do it in your free time. Instead, do it when you are already doing something
else, something that doesnt require much of your attention. Listen to the materials while commuting,
while waiting in line, while exercising and so on. Use those times to practice listening so that you dont
have to spend extra time.
Now, why do we have to do this? Well the reason is that we want to make it convenient. When its easy
to do, youre likely to do it for a long time. And if you do it long enough, your listening skills will definitely
improve. Now let me show you my pokemans, my pokemans let me show you them. Now let me
show you something that might shock you, lets compare this technique with watching movies which is
how many people improve their listening. If you start using this technique today and if you do it for 30
minutes per day one year from now, you will have listened to 10,950 minutes of real English
conversations, thats a lot of listenings.
And because youre not doing it in your free time, the amount of extra time spent is zeroThats
awesome!
Now what about watching movies?
Well first of all, in a movie there isnt a conversation or a dialogue in every part, right? If you watch an
action movie, for example: you might see a fight scene, an explosion, a car chase scene and so on. So
lets say that on average the length of a movie is 100 minutes, 50% of those are conversations, the rest
is something else. If you watch 4 movies a week or 208 movies a year, in one year you will have
listened to 10,400 minutes of fake English conversations. Now, heres the worst part, because each
movie is 100 minutes long, this method requires you to spend as much as 20,800 minutes of your free

time, that is really; really sad.

Now lets compare the two methods side by side. Now I have a question for you: I f you use this
technique instead of watching movies, and you save over 20,000 minutes per year, how would you
spend these 20,000 minutes? Reading English books to increase your vocabulary? Practicing
speaking? Or something else?
Leave a comment and let me know. So now you know the power of this technique, let me repeat
something important: This is a long term process, it takes time so please be patient. Fortunately now
you know this technique so I know that youll succeed.
So now is time for me to share some listening materials with you but first I want to ask you for a favor. It
took me several days to create this video and find some materials for you, if you find this video useful,
take a few seconds and share it with one English learning community, youll not only help them but help
me also. And then just click here to get some free listening materials.
