Using only the back loop of the previous row:
R2 - 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 half double crochet (hdc) into each stitch, 1 sc in the last stitch.
R3 - chain 1, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each stitch, 1 sc in the last stitch.
R4 to R18 - chain 1, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each stitch, 1 sc in the last stitch.

Join the first and the last row with slip stitch. Fasten off.


Round Cactus:

R1 - chain 13 (12 stitches and 1 for turning chain)
Using only the back loop of the previous row:
R2 - 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 half double crochet (hdc) into each stitch, 1 sc in the last stitch.
R3 - chain 1, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc into each stitch, 1 sc in the last stitch.
