Standard 2 Assignment
You need to answer every question. If you skip a question, you will receive no
credit. This is a required assignment in order for you to get your PE credit.
You will be focusing on the sport of basketball.
1. Please write out 2 paragraphs describing the sport of basketball. What are the
rules? How do you play? How many people are on the court during play? Provide
textual evidence and cite the resources you used.
Reminder, a paragraph consists of at least 3 sentences
Basketball is a very involved sport. The game is played with two teams and
there are 5 people from each team on the court at a time. Each time has their own
basket and both teams share one basketball. The object of the game is to outscore
your opponent by shooting as many baskets as you can into your own basket by
dribbling, rebounding, passing and catching, shooting, and defending the opponent.
Each team wants to prevent the other team from putting the ball into their basket.
Each high school game is made up of 4-8 minute quarters while college games are
divided into 2-20 minute halves.
There are 5 positions: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power
forward and center. Scoring is as follows: 3 points to a shot taken from beyond the
3-point line, 2 points for a shot made anywhere else on the court and 1 point for a
free throw. There are many common fouls in basketball, including: blocking,
charging, elbowing, flagrant foul (violence), hand check, holding, intentional foul,
offensive foul, personal foul, technical foul and team foul. There are also many
different types of violations, including: back-court violation, five-second violation,
double dribble, goal-tending, lane violation, ten seconds in the back court, three
seconds in the lane, and traveling.

2. What are 3 strategic and/or tactical requirements for successful performance in
basketball?.
-Speed
Why is this important? Speed is important for basketball because players
want to be as fast as they can to run down the court and act quickly to make baskets
faster than the other team.
-Agility
Why is this important? Players need to be quick on their feet and be able to
adapt to any move or pass that comes their way.
-Build a good offense and defense
Why is this important? Coaches should put their players in what works best
for them. If one player is best at offense, then he/she should be playing offense, that
way the team’s offense is as strong as it can be. The same goes for defense.
3. How is basketball similar to other activities? If you know how to play basketball,
can you use that knowledge to play other sports? Please compare basketball to 3
other activities.
Basketball is similar to other sports in the basics of the game itself: 2 teams
playing, trying to outscore each other in the time limit of the game, following a
specific set of rules. If you know how to play basketball, your chances of excelling at
any other sport would most likely increase. Basketball is similar to volleyball,
football and baseball. When comparing basketball and these three sports, one will
realize that all of the sports have 2 teams working to score against the other, each
team works together to pass the ball to each other and score.
4. How can knowledge from other activities help you be successful in basketball?
Provide 3 examples.
-Hand-eye coordination from a sport like baseball or football would help you
tremendously in basketball
-General strength training would help you for defense in basketball
-Speed work like grapevines, ladders, suicides/shuffle-cides, would help with
agility and overall speed.
5. What biomechanical principles impact the performance of basketball? (Please talk
about force, stability, angles, and rotation for the following aspects of basketball)
You should pretend that you are explaining how to do these activities. I should be
able to read your description and then go out and do the activity myself.
-Dribbling – dribbling the ball is a specific bouncing of the basketball down the
court and to do this properly, one should keep one hand in control of the basketball
at a time, arm should be waist height in front of the body to keep the basketball
within boundaries. The force driving the dribble is coming from the finger pads and
the basketball should maintain a smooth, continuous dribble while staying in the
boundaries of the court.
-Shooting – To prepare to shoot, the player needs to be balanced on both feet, one
foot in front of the other, to increase stability. Holding the basketball with both
hands, the player bends with the knees to jump and extend both the legs completely,
and the arms extend, propelling the basketball towards the basket. All the leg and
arm muscles are being initiated and used at once. When the player has reached the
maximum height of their jump, they release the basketball. Following through, the
player comes out of the jump and lands on both feet, hands in the air, wrist fully
extended and fingers pointed down towards their feet.
-Defense – To be a successful defensive player, a player needs to use their stability
and agility and focus to be able to block and defend the opponent. The player needs
to be able to rapidly change their position in order to move with the opponent and
match their moves to prevent them from shooting or passing.
Now you will focus on your performance in basketball. If you have never played,
try to find a way to at least play for a little bit. Do you have a basketball that
you can at least dribble? Can you make a basket that you could use as a target
to shoot?
6. Talk about your strengths in basketball. What things can you do well? I’m fast
enough to dribble down the court and I am pretty agile on my feet.
7. Talk about your weaknesses in basketball. What are things you aren’t very good
at? I don’t have very good hand-eye coordination, which is important to make
baskets and pass the ball to other players.
8. How can you improve your weaknesses?
-How often would you need to practice to get better? To get better, I would
probably need to practice at least 4 days a week.
-How long would you need to practice to get better? I would need to practice
at least 1 hour each day.
-What intensity would you practice in order to get better? (Would it be an
easy practice where you don’t sweat often or would it be a hard practice where you
sweat and get out of breath from working so hard?)
I would practice at a pretty high intensity because that would make me focus
more and work harder.
